Cross country new varsity sport
search for a coach going on now
by Bryan Gomolcbak
Collegian Staff
If you are a sports fan, you'll
love what Penn State is doing for
you. They are trying to bring a
totally new approach to cross
country here at Behrend. They
have decided to bring this varsity
sport to our campus.
For those of you that did not
know that Cross Country was
available here at Behrend, it is.
This year the team took on the
look of a club and not as a team.
Next fall Behrend's Atheletic
Director Herb Laufer has decided
to bring the team to life. All he
needs are some dedicated runners.

Daytona
500

Coliegain Staff
NASCAR fans your time of
the year for glory began last
Sunday in Daytona Beach for the
famed NASCAR "Super Bowl of
Auto Racing," The Daytona 500.
The big story of the week was
that Dale Earnhardt, a man that
had tried to win the race and failed
in 17 previous attempts was at
the pole for the big race. In fact,
not only did he have the pole, but
last year's runner up in the
Winston Cup points standings
also had won the IROC race and
the Twin 125's earlier in the
week.
Right from the start, Earnhardt
fell back to ninth, as the Fords
overpowered the Chevys, as they
did throughout much of the day.
On lap nine a massive wreck
took out last year's winner of the
Winston Cup Jeff Gordon, and a
short time later Sterling Marlin,
who had won the last two
Daytona 500's, fell victim to
engine trouble.
The race claimed Ernie Irvin's
car later in the race, but his
teammate Dale Jarrett driving the
No. 88 Ford Thunderbird kept
the pace throughout the day.
With about 33 laps remaining,
a pit stop was made and by
taking only left side tires,
Earnhardt came out in the lead.
However, Jarrett was paced by a
gang of Fords a short time later
to overtake the lead.
With help from fellow Chevy
driver Kenny Schraeder and the
combined draft from the two cars,
Dale and Kenny were able to
move to 2-3. This made it a
Dale and Dale show just as it was
back in 1988 when Jarrett just
outlasted Earnhardt for the
victory.
The end of the race was close
just as it was in 1988, but the
muscle of the Thunderbird
outlasted Earnhardt's and
Schraeder's Chevys to take the
checked flag. All in all, Ford
took eight of the top ten
positions.
Next up on the NASCAR
circuit is Rockingham Motor
Speedway on Sunday.
In order to put a team together,
Lauffer believes that "runners
must come out in solid numbers
and make a committment to the
program." Lauffer believes that
Behrend can become a
competitive running team at
Division 111 meets. "We can be
competitive, but it will take
some time to build up our
program," Lauffer states. He is
just looking for runners to get
the team going and perhaps even
take a title.
Practices will begin as soon as
students report back to school in
the fall, considering the first
meets will begin in early
September. Lauffer is hoping to

have a big turnout for cross
country in the fall and is looking
for approximately 10-15 runners
for each of the varsity men's and
women's teams.
These varsity teams will
compete against a variety of
different Division 111 schools
including Buffalo State, Grove
City College, and Alfred
University just to name a few.
A course has been established
by Coaches Fomari and Niland
which is similar to the one that
was used for intramurals although
it is a bit longer for the men.
The men's course is
approximately 5.1 miles and the
women's course runs about 3.2
miles.
These two coaches are also
responsible for recruitment of
new freshmen that may want to
join the program. Recruitment
in our area is fairly good because

for
of the trememdous runners that
come out of high schools in the
surrounding counties. We look
forward to having a strong team
sometime down the line and these
recuiting efforts will help.
For those of you that are
wondering who the coach is
going to be, you are just going
to have to wait a little longer.
When Lauffer was asked about a
coach he had this to say, "We
look to advertise in early April,
and we will have a single coach
for both men's and women's
cross country. When a coach is
named, he will be hired as a full
time faculty member and will be
given a teaching assignment
within the Esact department."
