Lady Lions streaking to possible playoff bid
by Brian Gregory
Collegian Staff
And the streak rolls on
On Thursday of last week they
demolished a stripped Hilbert
Lady Hawk basketball team, and
on Saturday they ripped through
the Keuka Warriors.
The win against the Lady
Hawks was expected since they
were a weaker program. In fact
they only brought six players to
Erie Hall to battle the Lady
Lions.
“We needed to play and get up
on them early,” commented Head
Coach Roz Fomari on what she
expected from her team. “If we
did that we knew we could give
everyone playing time.”
The game was close for the
first two minutes, but then
Behrend ran all over Keuka for a
early 14-4 lead. Then, behind
solid shooting from the floor (55
percent first half) the Lady Lions

The second half was much of

Becky Reed had a game-high
seven assists.
“It was nice to see all the
players on the court,” said
Fomari of the whole team effort.
“It gave us an opportunity to see
them all. Mack, McCormick,
and Schultz all did very nice
things. They were all solid."

Among the others who saw
playing time, Mack had four
assists, Robin Mangus had four
points, and Jaime Bideaux had her
first bucket of the year. The
Lady Lions notched seven on the
win sneak and 14-7 record on the
95-96 campaign. Hilbert fell to
2-15.
Next up for the Lady Lions
was a supposed lough Keuka (6-
14) team. Behrend started off
tough and had a commanding 31-
20 lead with just over 2:30 left in
the half. But Keuka went on a
11-2 run to cut the lead to 33-31
at the half.
“We played poor defense [at the
end of the first half],” commented
Fomari. “We stopped executing
and almost lost the lead. We
needed to take better care of the
ball.”
The run for Keuka was quite a
wake-up call for the Lady Lions.

Kick the ball outside: Erin McCormick (44) passes the ball back to Becky Reed in the Lady Lions
game against Hilbert.
McCormick finished with a
career high 11. Roz Fornari's
squad has won eight in a row
and are in position for a
possible ECAC playoff spot
strong in the second half to lake a
huge lead on Keuka. They used a
49 percent shooting average and a
79 percent performance from the
frre throw line to coast to 49
second half points and an 82-54
victory.
Fomari was much more pleased
with her team’s effort in the
second half.
“We started running better.
When we play well on offense
and defense and we execute, we
are unbeatable. Our defense
really picked it up and I was
surprised with the margin of
victory.”
The game, was the last Lady
Lton home game of the season.
It was also Senior Night to honor
co-captains Reed and Schlott
which turned out to be a success
for the two stars. Schlott turned
in 25 points including 9-12 from
the charity stripe and Reed poured
in 16 points, five assists, and
Thursday, February 15, 1996
four blocks to help lead the Lady
Lions. Emily Marini had a top
notch performance with 18 points
and six rcboards.
“She did the things shced
needed to do,” said Fornari of
Marini’s effort. “If people were
open she’d pass it, if she was
open she’d take the shot. Watch
her on offensive and defense. She
has been one of our leaders all
year.”
NOTES
Schlott, Reed, and Ban as have
started all twenty-two games for
the Lady Lions. They are also 1-
2-3 in scoring with 16.0, 13.4,
and 11.6 ppg respectively.
Schlott leads the Lady Lions
with 12.5 rebounds per game.
Reed’s four blocks against
Keuka and seven assists against
Hilbert helped her to lead the
team in both categories.
