The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team has an
unusual twist to its season, with four freshmen in their
starting line-up. These freshmen have had to get their
games together to find a way to win. One such freshman
has really come up big for the Lions this season. He is
Housing and Food Services athlete of the week, Jeff
Myers.
Coach Niland is very enthusiastic about the talent that
Myers has shown on the court
“He is a very hard worker and a very talented freshman.
Even though he is not a starter, he has a lot of potential
and helps from off the bench,” explained Niland.
Myers, a first year forward, really knows how to put the
rock in the hole, being Behrend’s third leading scorer
averaging 9.6 points per game. Myers is also the team
leader in shot blocks with 10. He is also a very avid
contributor rebounding, offensively and defensively.
Myers has been a big part of the Lions basketball program
this year and has contributed very much over the previous
two games.

On February 7, the Lions took on Laßoche College and
came away with a 72-61 win. This was one of Myers
finest games as he led all scorers with 14 points. He also
led all rebounders with six.
In Erie Hall on February 10, the Lions look on a tough
Keuka College team and suffered a two point defeat 59-57.
Myers contributed all he could to bring the Lions as close
to a win as he could. He shot 3-6 from the field including
one from behind the three point arc, scoring nine points.
Myers, when asked about what his main role was for
the Lions explained, “I go in for instant offense and give
our starters a rest. I feel better coming off the bench
because I hear what the starters are doing wrong so I don’t
do them.”
Myers’ teammate Ron Derian had high praise for his
freshman teammate.
“He brings us a quick center who can shoot from the
outside. I believe the freshmen this year have played well
and have gained experience as the season has progressed,”
stated Derian.
Myers is just one of those freshman that knows how to
play coming off the bench. He is definitely Behrend’s
sixth man.
