World Color
splashes in
BEHREND-Behrend will host the international music group World
Color on Monday, February 12 at 7:30 pm in the Reed Union
Commons.
World Color is a group of musicians and storytellers from West
Africa, Japan, Ireland, South Africa, Mexico, and the United States.
The group combines world music themes with contemporary rock
sounds to address racial and environmental issues. Music is
accompanied by Native American and African storytelling, slide
photography, and visual art
Traditional and contemporary music is performed on classical,
ethnic, and electrical instruments. The group will present a multi
media cultural production, "Music and Art for World Peace," based
upon Native American prophecies of peace through racial harmony.
The performance is sponsored by the Penn State-Behrend Matchbox
Players, the Student Programming Council, the Multi-Cultural
Council, and the Office of Student Activities. For more information,

Safety Report
January 31: A student came to the Police and Safety office
requesting assistance after he fell through the ice in
Wintergreen Gorge and was injured. The student was
transported to the hospital by Brookside Fire Department

February 3; Police and Safety officers assisted Residence
Life staff in deeding with a loud patty in the apartments.
Febniary 4: A student reported the theft of laundry from the
Lawrence Hal laundry room.
February 4: PoHce and Safety officers responded to a
complaint of a loud party in the apartments. They were
required to go back to the same apartment again at 4:02 a.m.
This time the party was broken up.
Program addresses
pornography

BEHREND-A program
addressing pornography is being
sponsored by the Residence Life
staff at Penn State Behrend on
Valentine’s Day, February 14.
The program will feature a film,
"Not a Love Story: A Film
About Pornography." An open
discussion will follow the film
with a dessert reception to end the
evening. The event is scheduled
for 8 p.m. in the Reed Lecture
Hall.
During the discussion, the
Residence Life staff wants people
to be open about their
perceptions of pornography.
Questions about pornography’s
effect on men and women will be
addressed.

violent toward women. Some
theories blame pornography for
men hating women or perceiving
women as sex objects. Other
theories say that viewing
pornography desensitizes men
toward violence against women,
which is much different than
saying pornography causes rape
and violence against women.
Many book stores carry pom
magazines. The internet is full
of pornographic images that are
easily downloaded. Erie has strip
bars/clubs and several adult
bookstores. Pornography is
easily accessible.
Attending strip bars is a
common practice for some men,
as well as watching pornographic
films. This program hopes to
explore how men view
pornography and how women and
couples feel about pornography.

Four colleges chosen for
presidential debates

WASHINGTON-Campaign
'96 is over.
That is, the campaign staged
by more than 40 universities and
cities to host the presidential and
vice presidential debates is over,
according to the Commission on
Presidential Debates.
The non-partisan group
narrowed its selection down to
four universities Jan. 29. Each
school chosen met strict
guidelines regarding traffic flow,
hotel accommodations and
broadcast capabilities. They also
had facilities large enough to hold
the debates and 2,000 members of
the media.
Winners are Washington
University (St. Louis) for the
first presidential debate on Sept.
25; Trinity College (Hartford,
Conn.) for the vice presidential
debate at the Civic Center Ocl 2;
University of South Florida for
the second presidential debate at
the Bayfront Center Oct. 9; and
the University of San Diego for
the third presidential debate Oct.
16.
The 90-minute debates each
will have a single moderator and
cover foreign and domestic
issues.

viewers, the largest for any
televised political event in
history. Exit polls in the 1988
and 1992 elections showed that
more Americans based their votes
on the debates than on any other
event, according to the
commission.
Hundreds of students are
expected to work as volunteers
during the debates, and some may
even be able to question the
candidates during the second
debate's "town meeting’’ formaL
"College campuses are
basically the focus of our search
for one reason; the debates are
about education," said Janet
Brown, executive director of
Commission on Presidential
Debates.
As it has with the last two
elections, the group deliberately
chose schools from different
regions of the nation. Past debate
sites include the Georgia Institute
of Technology, the University of
Richmond, Wake Forest
University and the University of
California at Los Angeles.
One of this year's winners,
Washington University, was also
the site of 1992's presidential
debate. Students at Washington
seemed pleased by the news, to
say the least

junior at Washington.
"Everyone's just ecstatic about
Chancellor Marie S. Wrighton
agreed. "It's an honor to be a
repeat"
Like other schools,
Washington submitted a proposal
to the commission outlining how
it would handle the needs of the
candidates and national press
corps.
Hosting the presidential debate
is an "extraordinary" experience,
involving weeks of planning
every detail, Wrighton said.
Colleges were evaluated on a host
of criteria, from the number of
electrical outlets in the school's
fieldhouse to the placement of
bathrooms for the candidates, he
added.
Also, a lot of teamwork and
camaraderie is involved with "the
university circumventing all
elements of bureaucracy and just
doing what needs to be done," he
said. "We can deal with
adversity."
Although, this time should be
old hat for Washington U. 'We
did it once. We kind of know
what to do," he said. "We can
do it a bit more leisurely this
time."
The school has not started
thinking about election year
2000. "One election year at a
time," he said.
