Buchanan takes
Louisiana caucuses
LOUSIANA-Pat Buchanan, Republican presidential hopeful, won
a shocking upset in Louisiana’s GOP presidential caucuses over
Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, the heavy favorite.
On the national level, the victory may carry little weight. Many
GOP candidates boycotted Louisiana in deference to the traditional
primary start in lowa, The victory, aided by a heavy conservative
and religious right vote, does give Buchanan ’ s campaign momentum
in the approaching primaries in lowa and New Hampshire.
Oily six percent of Louisiana’s registered Republicans turned out
for die vote. Buchanan got 13 of the state’s 21 delegates, with
Gramm winning eight.
National polls show Sen. Bob Dole and Steve Forbes, a
publisher, leading the race for GOP presidential nominee.
Lead linked with delinquency
in children
Lead posioning has beat linked with delinquency and anti-social
behavior, reported a new' study in yesterday’s Journal of the
American Medical Association.
The study, done by the same researcher who reported in 1979 that
lead harms children's intelligence, found that children with the
highest levels of lead in their-bones were more likely to:
♦Be aggressive.
-Have social problems.
-Have attention difficulties.
The study, lead by Dr. Herbert Needleman of the University of
Pittsburgh, tracked 301 boys in Pittsburgh public schools for four
years, from ages seven to eleven. None had ever been diagnosed
with lead posioning and some had normal blood lead levels.
Since 1976, blood lead levels in children have fallen 77 percent,
largley due to the elimination of leaded gasoline. However, many
older homes have lead-containing paint on walls and ceilings. When
it peels, children are at risk for ingesting it.
Dinner with the Flintstones
CANTON, NY-In a throwback to ancient times, St. Lawrence
University students fashioned stone tools then carved up a deer for a
class feast.
Associate Prof. John Barthelme said the idea behind his course,
“Neanderthal: Fact, Fiction and Fantasy,” is to teach students about
the origins of modem people ami, clear up “caveman” stereotypes.
“More and more we know now that [Neanderthals] were very, very
intelligent and very human-like,” he said, not stooped hairy men
that “grabbed women by the hair and pulled them into a cave.”
Students learned the intricacies of stone tool-making, the used
their new tools to dehide a deer and remove its major joints. The
deet had been killed by poachers and given to Barthelme, a seasoned
toolmekr, by wildlife officials..
But instead of cooking the meat over an open Fire, students turned
it over to the school’s food service. “It was about 23 degrees
outside so we decided not to do that,” Barthelme said.
All but one student, a vegetarian who also did not take part in the
butchering, enjoyed the venison meal. Barthelme said other students
have carved goats, and a professor he knows at Indiana University
cut up an elephant using homemade stont tools.

has since designated a spot in the Niagra parking lot for 15 minute

Joint Residence Council President Bill Mattory addressed student
complaints of inadequate on-campus housing. Some students who
filled out housing applications were placed near the bottom of the
waiting list, even though they applied before the deadline. According
to Mattory, Housing and Food Services reserves 150 rooms for
incoming students every year. But the waiting list is expected to
drastically shrink over the summer, so students who are now behind
100 to 200 others may still get into on-campus housing.
A Get to Know the JRC meeting will be held on Monday at 7:00
