Thursday, February 1,1996 Even “Grumpier” the second time by Jeannine Ouillette Collegian Staff "Grumpier Old Men," starring Ann Margret, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Sophia Loren is a witty comedy that will leave you hysterical. Lemmon and Matthau play as John and Max, two old men who live next door to each other in a small town neighborhood in Minneapolis. With everyone pairing off into couples, including his own son and John's daughter, Max becomes "singled-ouL" The title is very suitable for the film because the two old men are so grumpy they have nothing better to do but play pranks on each other. A new woman, Maria (Sophia .oren), moves into town to take over her late brother's bait shop; to many people's surprise, her plan is to turn it into a Hopper’s and The Philharmonic? ERIE-World-renowned conductor Joseph Silverstein takes the Warner Theatre'stage to conduct the Erie Philharmonic on Saturday, February 24th. For the first half of the program, Maestro Silverstein will lead the orchestra and chorus in Mozart’s “Great” C Minor Mass. After intermission, he returns to conduct Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. The soloists for the Mozart are soprano Susan Gundunas, mezzo soprano Mimi Lerner, tenor David Parks, and baritone Daniel Bromstcd. Last season, the Erie Philharmonic and Hoppers Brcwpub teamed up for “Bach, Beer, & Beethoven Night” a night for audience members to taste Hoppers’ microbrewed beer restaurant. The old men are not thrilled by Maria's ideas, being that fishing is another of their favorite past times. In addition to planning a wedding and trying to find Max a girlfriend, their new "hobby" becomes revenge on Maria, to only find out that she is not easily defeated. Finally, and to everyone's dismay, the plot receives an added twist - Max and Maria fall in love. The ending of the movie is a joyful one, with each part of its active plot being tied together neatly. The makers of the film include comical movie making fumbles at the very end. A line for laughs: "Hey baby, want to come back to my place? I’ll show you my bony cannoli!” Who's line is it? Go find out! This is the perfect movie to free yourself from last minute weekend homework. and Hopper enthusiasts to try the Erie Philharmonic. “Bach, Beer, 3fe*feeethoven Night”* returns at intermission of this February 24th concert with complimentary samples of Hoppers’ beer for those 21 or over with proper identification. An Open Reheasal has been added to this concert for Friday, February 23rd, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Doors open with tours of the Warner Theatre at 6:30, and Concertmaster Lee Wilkins gives a talk and demonstration about the concert music at 7:00. Tickets are sold at the door at $5 per person. The concert is at 8 p.m. in the Warner Theatre; student tickets arc $8.75 and are available through the Erie Philharmonic by calling 455-1375. They brew five different beers there. It is located at the old train station.
