Behrend pounds Oberlin, falls to Alleghney Hall],” said a tired Head Coach Dave Niland. “But these road games allow us to get experience. The reality of college basketball happens on the road.” Tuesday evening, Behrend (9-7) traveled to Meadville, Pa to battle the Gators of Allegheny College (12-6). The Gators bit the Lions by a final score of 78-65. “Our defense in the first half costed us the game. We did not defend well at all,” said Niland. Jeff Myers led the Lions in scoring with 16 points and a team-high five rebounds. Andy Lawrence followed with 15 points, and Steve Adams chipped in 11 points during the losing effort. Despite the output from Myers, Allegheny held the Behrend frontcourt in check, making the Lions put the ball up from the outside. “We could not score consistently from inside, and that hurt us,” remarked Niland. “But credit Allegheny; this was one of the best teams we have played all year.” The Lion/Gator game saw a difference in the starting five for Behrend. Andy Rife got the call to start at point guard. When asked about his decision, Niland was confident in the change. Costantini hit four three pointers in the Lions 83-57 win. “I felt Rife deserved the opportunity to start. We need to give this opportunity to kids who perform in practice,” Niland started. “It was a coaching decision, and Chad [Sutton] is still a very important part of the team.” Next, the Lions returned home to entertain the Yeomen of Oberlin. Behrend came out on top in-this contest, 83-57. Despite the , 26-point win, Behrend found themsbives on the short end of a 14-5 score early in the first half. Niland then used a time-out to settle down his troops. “We realized that as a group, we were not giving enough energy to win the game,” said Niland. “We had the open shots Thursday, February 1, 1996 early, they just didn’t fall.” For the game, Behrend was led by the freshmen tandem of Anthony Costantini and Jason Paloskey, who each finished with 18 points. Costantini shot 4-for -5 from three-point range, and Paloskey went 8-for-ll from the field. Lawrence finished the evening with 11 points and seven rebounds, four of which were off the offensive glass, while Brian Perkins chalked eight points and seven boards. Ron Derian ended with six points, six rebounds, and four assists. Last Wednesday, Behrend boarded the bus, to make the haul to Wayncsbiirg College, the winners of five straight. The Yellow Jackets kept their streak going by stinging the Lions, 85- 72. “We did not defend well,” said Coach Niland. “We were fortunate enough to beat them earlier in the season, and now [Wayncsburg] is on top of the PAC league.” Three Lions were in double digits for scoring, as Lawrence finished with 13 points, Adams 12, and Brian Emick qlso netted 12 points. Between these three Lions, the trio shot 9-of-14 from behind the arc. Next on the schedule for Behrend is a double header with the Lady Lions, at home tonight, against the Tomcats of Thiel College. * » * * i
