Letter to the Editor:
I would like to comment on the article,
"Moderation of Behrend Policies" submitted
anonymously, in order to avoid persecution
from Behrend's "political structure." The
submitter of the editorial is obviously an
underage student who not only got caught
once for under age drinking but caught twice
for the same offense. This is indicated by the
inclusion of themselves when referring to the
judge taking his/her license for a year. (The
first offense for an underage drinker is a three
month suspension of his/her license. The
second offense is a year's suspension of
his/her license).
The college experience is often the first
experience away from home for many
individuals trekking the traditional path of
continuing education. They are considered
adults; although, they are not yet legal to
consume alcoholic beverages. The choice to
drink (illegally) is their decision, whether or
not it is a common part of college life.
The writer seems to be in constant
contradiction. They tell about an automobile
accident that killed one friend and left the
other without a lesson learned (He still drinks
and drives). At this point, I figured the
writer was going to emphasize the importance
of making responsible decisions about
drinking; but instead, the writer advocated
drinking and driving when they accused
Police and Safety of being responsible for a
woman who was raped because she was too
drunk to drive without risking the chance of
an arrest. Huh? I think something is wrong
with this picture. First of all, I am sorry that
your friend was raped. I hope that she found
help dealing with what happened. I also
hope that she pressed charges on the
perpetrator of that crime. Lets blame the
person who took advantage of your
predicament.
Okay. It is generally known that everyone
hates a cop, until they need one. The policies
that are enforced at Behrend are the same
policies that all officers enforce, inside and
outside of academia. Alcohol related issues
are handled as though students are
responsible for their own actions.
Pennsylvania law states that no one under the
age of 21 is legal to consume alcoholic
beverages. Why at Behrend, should this law
be inactive? Behrend is real. So are its
students. The fact that "PEOPLE WELL
ALWAYS DRINK IN COLLEGE" does not
excuse those that are blind to the law that
says it is illegal. For those that do not drink
because they are too afraid to be caught
drinking and they do not want to lose their
license or receive fines are showing
responsibility and understand that actions are
followed by consequences. Not only do they
realize that drinking under the age of 21 is
illegal; they realize that driving while under
the influence can be deadly. Statistics on
drunk driving accidents are staggering. How
could anyone of sound mind clpim that
Behrend Policies are endangering the
drinking privileges of college students by
regulating the law on its campus.

and find alternatives to becoming sloshed.
Moderation for persons under the age of 21
means abstinence. For those who chose to
break the law and And themselves busted by
the Behrend "rent a cops," it must be a real
shocker to And out that these officers are real,
and have the authority to arrest and to charge
students as though they were real adults, on a
real campus, needing to obey real rules, in a
real world.

The
Powell vs. Dole
The 1996 election is looming near and it looks like there is a
new Republican Candidate on the horizon. His name is Colin
Powell, and he has become the new media darling of this
election.
Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole has many years of fruitful
and dedicated service in the Senate. Like Colin Powell who was
a General and was chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, during
the successful Desert Storm conflict, Senator Dole is also a war
hero.
Unlike Colin Powell, who was mainly calling the shots from
the Pentagon, Senator Dole was commanding an infantry
platoon in Italy during World War 11. Senator Dole showed
much heroism when he was shot up in the field and had to drag
his limp body miles to safety.
It took many years of intense physical therapy and surgeries to
help correct the damage done to his body but it cost him full use
of his right arm. He has a trademark habit of carrying a pen in
his right hand so that nobody will mistakenly shake his right
hand.
Colin Powell on the other hand was a career Army man who
rose from a humble family in Queens to be one of the most
powerful men in America, being head of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff.
Which man will voters choose? I’m not sure right now.
Senator Dole has more political experience and backing from the
Republican Party. Colin Powell has the carryover effect from
the Gulf War and all the Nationalistic pride that evokes in the
hearts of the American Citizenry.
Senator Dole ran previously for President and lost. So the
campaign trail for President will not be a new adventure for
Dole.
Senator Dole is considered a centrist in the Republican Party
and he does not have the full backing of the Christian Coalition.
Which has exerted a lot of force in the voting booth. ,
One often wonders if Colin Powell would accept the Vicp-
President nomination in return for assurances that Senator Dole
would only run for one term as President, considering his age
and everything.
These issues remain to be resolved, time will only tell, but it
seems that the Republicans have a decided edge in the race for
President in 1996.
