leader named ATW

This week's Housing and Food
Service's athlete of the week has
been playing the game,
basketball that is, since seventh
grade. She is none other than
junior Becky Reed.
Reed went to Northwestern
High School, and is currently a
management major with a minor
in MIS. Her future plans are
nothing definite, she would like
to be in a management position
and work with computers.
When asked why she thought
she was chosen as the ATW,
Reed responded, "I think I was
chosen for being consistent
throughout the season."
Reed said this about this past
season, "Some might say that the
win/loss record was
disappointing. I think we (the
team) did better than the record
showed. The freshmen this year
came in strong, they had a big
void to fill. We might have had
a young team, but I think we
were still good."
Reed commented in length
about goals, both team and
personal. "This year's team goal
was to make ECAC. I think
everyone toned down their
personal goals."
When asked if Reed
accomplished her personal goals,
she answered quite modestly. "I
always set my personal goals
very high. I set them just high
enough that I can almost touch
them, but never reach them. The
smaller goals, like driving to the
basket and ball handling, I think
I 'ye improved on."

Bohn explained that, "Becky is a
very improved player, she stepped
up in her ability, and I think
she'll be a great leader next year.
She's learned a lot from the
seniors in the past, and she
doesn't need anyone to pushed
her, she can push herself."
Another of Reed's teamates,
Mary Ann Rupp, said, "Becky is
a very dedicated player. She tried
to keep everybody else up, when
things were down."
When asked to comment on
Reed, Megan Musante said, "A
leadership role was vacant on our
team, and Becky stepped up and
filled the position."
Head Coach Roz Fornari said
of Reed, "Becky is our most
athletic player, she is a captain.
She improved her court presence
dramatically and led the team in
blocked shots."
As far as Reed is concerned this
season was a success, "We left
on a good note, I think the team
is in great shape for next year.

Behrend baseball:
Perritano and the Lions
prepare for another season
by Brian Stadler
Collegian Staff
Baseball fever is starting to
catch on at Behrend. The Lions,
under Coach Dan Perritano,
though hampered by the weather
as of late, are starting to practice
for the upcoming season.
They will not have to wait too
long to get into game situations.
They are scheduled to play March
23-26, in a tournament at Capital
College.
While this year's team is
dominated by underclassmen, it is
a whole and experienced team
looking to improve on their 11-
18 record last season.
Though Perritano has only
three weeks left to prepare the
Lions for the tournament, he is
very excited to get going. "The

games in Capital's tournament
are going to let us find out where
we are as a team and what we
will have to improve on. Those
games will be the strongest part
of our schedule," said Perritano.
With seven experienced players
returning, Perritano is looking
to them for leadership and
guidance for the team.
Perritano explained that, "The
returnees are a responsible group
of kids and I'm sure they'll be
examples for the new guys, on
and off the field. One of our
strengths should be our hitting,
we should have a solid hitting
ball club. "
One of those returning players
is sophomore centerfielder, Quinn
McGuire. Last year McGuire
batted .264 while leading the

He also had 22 stolen bases.
McGuire is very optimistic
about this season. "We hope to
do better than .500 and a 20 win
season is not our of our reach.
Our pitching staff has improved
and our team speed has also
improved."
Another returning player is
senior pitcher-first baseman, Tom
Gardner. He led the Lions last
year with a .410 batting average
along with 21 stolen bases.
"We are very capable of being
.500 and above. Credit should be
given to Coach Perritano for
starting to turn things around and
we are gaining respect among the
other colleges," said Gardner.
The first home game for
Behrend is April 5.
