Pittsburgh’s new

The NHL season might have
started a few months late, but the
Pittsburgh Penguins have not
missed a beat The Penguins set
a franchise record by playing their
first twelve games without a
loss.
The Penguins' record is
currently 11-0-1, but the
Penguins have a slim lead over
the Quebec Nordiques. After the
Nordiques' 3-2 victory over the
New York Islanders, they were
only one point behind the
Penguins in the Northeast
Division standing, with a record
of 11-1.
Not only is the Penguins'
streak best in their franchise
history, but it is the fourth best
in NHL history. If the Penguins
get a win or a tie in their next
three games, they will tie the
Happy Valley
by Josh Lucas

It's the middle of winter in
Happy Valley, and sports is still
a hot topic despite the end of the
football season.
After winning the Rose Bowl
and finishing the season
undefeated in football, you would
think things would simmer down
a bit at Penn State until
September, but that is not the
case.
The reason is the Penn State
Nittany Lions basketball team.
Penn State basketball is winning
and thinking post-season in the
middle of February. .
Penn State opened the 1994-95
season by finishing the non
conference schedule 8-1 with it's
lone loss to Texas Tech 67-61
back on December 28.
The Nittany Lions began ‘95
with a disappointing loss at
Minnesota 69-67 in the Big Ten
opener. The Lions then surprised
Michigan with a ten point
victory over the Wolverines in
Rec Hall.
In the next game, Penn State
defeated Ohio State on the road
by 14 points, but then lost a
nail-biter to Bobby Knight's
Hoosiers 71-69 at home.
The Nittany Lions recovered
from the Indiana loss and reeled
off two consecutive wins against
Northwestern and Wisconsin
which put Penn State 4-2 in Big
Ten play.
PSU then suffered two tough
losses to Big Ten powers Purdue
and Michigan State which evened
their record at 4-4,12-5 overall.
NHL record for the best start to a
season set by Edmonton in the
1984-1985 season.
Much has been said about how
the Penguins would play without
future Hall of Famer Mario
Lemieux and starting goal tender
Tomßarrasso.
However, the Penguins have
drowned those words with the
likes of Jaromir Jagr, Ron
Francis and Ken Wregget who
have played outstanding in the
Penguins' first 12 games.
Left Winger Jagr is leading the
league in scoring so far this
season. Jagr has 23 goals and 11
assists for 34 total points. He
had his second career hat trick
Tuesday night in a 5-3 victory
over Boston. Jagr scoring
production is similar to the best
seaon of the great Lemeuix.
Francis, the Penguin who has
taken Lemeuix's place in the
starting lineup at center, also has
Penn State recovered and took
care of lowa at Rec Hall 74-64
before a national television
audience on CBS two weeks ago.
However, last week the Lions
lost two in a row to Illinois and
Michigan State to drop the
Nittany Lions to 5-6 in the Big
Ten which marks the first time
since the Minnesota loss that
Penn State is under .500 in the
conference.

a big scoring threat for the
Penguins this season. Francis
has five goals and 15 assists, for
20 total points. Those 20 points
puts Francis third in the league in

Wregget has been forced into

season even started.
Wregget has played every

So far, it has been a two horse
race between Pittsburgh and
Quebec for best record in the
NHL Eastern Conference.

NHL teams will only play others
from their own conferences. So
that means the Penguins will
only play teams like the
Nordiques, Bruins, and Rangers.
So if the start of the season is
any indication of whether or not
another the Stanley Cup will
return to the city of Pittsburgh, it
appears to be all systems go.
