Hannon patrols
the paint
by Erin Morrell
CoUtgiatt Skiff
Desmond Hannon, an asset to
the Lion’s basketball team, is
this week’s athlete of the week.
Since January first, Hannon has
been averaging eight points and
ten rebounds.
According to Coach Niland,
“Off the court Desmond is a
mature person and player, not to
mention a true definite player and
leader.”
Hannon said, “I just try to do
the job that Coach Niland asks
me to do. In my opinion, I feel I
contribute most to the team when
I come off the bench. I bring an
emotional lift and a change in the
tempo.”
Hannon has been playing
organized ball for three years.
Coach Niland remarked, “On the
court, he plays extremely hard
and intense. He’s a great leader.”
Even though Hannon didn’t
play for Behrend last year, he has
become a team player. “This
year’s team is a close unit, and
we have overcome a lot of
adversity. Although we have lost
players, we are having a good
season,” said Hannon.
Junior Lance Burgert said,
“Desmond has really picked it up
since Christmas break. He works

hard as a rebounder and defender,
and he has really improved his
offensive ability which has
helped the team. He’s a great
overall player.”
Hannon believes that the
strongest part of his game is
rebounding and that he specializes
in defense. Brandon George
agrees. “He’s a hard worker, and
I feel that he deserves athlete of
the week. He’s worked hard this
week; he got the rebounds, played
intense defense, and even put
points on the board," said
George.
Hannon believes his experience
at Behrend has been positive.
He’s learned a lot from the older
players and made friends through
basketball.
Chad Sutton said, “He’s the
hardest worker in all our
practices. It has helped his game
and development making him
stronger on rebounds.”
Hannon has set personal goals
along with team goals.
Personally, he would like to keep
doing his job, hitting the boards,
and to keep up with his
schoolwork. “I would like us to
finish the season strong, go
undefeated and even make it to
the play-offs,” Hannon replied.
“I wish I had nine more just
like him,” Niland said.
