Once he returns, he makes it his mission to buy a house that he finds on the sales market. At an auction, he bids on the house. Since he isn’t sure if he can get the old, dilapidated house, he doesn’t want to get everyone’s hopes up so he just tells his son, Stu about his plans. As well as finding a house, Steven needs to find a job. He goes from job to job until he finally gets a high paying job in the mine. Even though it’s dangerous, he takes it Stu and Lidia, Steven’s children, both want to build a tree house in the same tree. After fighting over who gets the tree, Steven tells them that they must share it. Since neither want to share, Stu and his friends make a dare for Lidia and her friends. If they win the dare, the tree house will be built by the boys and be shared. The girls win. A neighborhood family, the Kinickeys, have five kids who torment Stu, Lidia and their friends. After seeing the tree house, the Kinickeys want it and take it over. But Stu and Lidia want to fight for their creation and dare the Kinickeys. Whoever wins the dare, swimming across the bottom of the water tower, wins the tree house. Stu wins, but the Kinickeys still intend to take over their domain. As Steven and Stu begin bonding, Steven tells Stu of the horrible experiences of Vietnam, and one in particular. While in the war, his troops were bombed and his best friend of the war was hit. This experience has had a dramatic impact on his view of war and violence. Steven believes that violence is no answer. While at work, Steven encounters problems in the mine. He and his partner are trapped inside as the mine collapses. Just as in Vietnam, his friend in the mine is hit, this time with rocks. Steven saves him, but in return seriously injures himself. Steven dies. As the Kinickeys begin attacking the tree house so they can gain control, war breaks out. Stu, stands back and sees the effects that war have on people. As the credits roll, top names of Hollywood appear: Kevin Costner, Elijah Wood and Mare Winningham. Due to her excellent performance in this film, unknown Lexi Randall should have a bright future on the screen. “The War” is an intense, as well as fantastic, drama showing how the violence of war leads to destruction, not victory.
