Some say winning isn’t
everything, but don’t tell the
Behrend women’s volleyball
team. Last weekend the team
battled adversity mid fatigue to
win the Messiah Tournament
held at Messiah College near
Harrisburg.

Behrend defeated Messiah in
the semifinals by senes of 9-15,
17-15 and 15-10. Then then
defeated Catholic College of
Maryland by scores of 15-13,3-
15 and 15-12 to win the
tournament.
All-tournament selection,
Mitzi Carter, led Behrend with
63 kills. She also had 25 digs
and 10 blocks through the

tournament. Molly Samuels
also had a consistent tournament
collecting 33 kills. Back court
players, Jen Leone and Jen
Taylor, kept the ball in play,
each compiling 44 digs. Angie
Georg eclipsed the century mark
in assists, passing out 108.
The adversity the team faced
came before the tournament even
started. Seniors Amy Stranahan
and Carrie Grzejka never made it
to the tournament because
Stranahan’s car broke down
driving to the tournament.
With the team’s victory, it set
a new record for the number of
victories in a season. Its record
now stands at 27-14. The
previous record for victories was
26. With 27 wins an ECAC
playoff bid is still possible. The
team will not find out until
tomorrow at the earliest whether
it will receive one.
Head Coach Jan Wilson felt an
outstanding effort was given by
her team during the tournament
“We played from 9 am. until
9 p.m. Fatigue really was a
factor during the tournament.
Amy (Good) and Kim (Vollmer)
really gave us a lift off the
bench. Being able to rest some
of our starters made the
difference. We played and won
against some teams ranked
regionally in ECAC.’’

Samuels felt the Mcsm.i:
tournament was the culmination
of a marvelous regular season.
‘This tournament was very
competitive. We were mentally
prepared for it We got very
tired but we didn’t lose our
mental composure”
Taylor, a middle-hitter, agreed
with Samuels’ comments. “We
were equal with many of the
teams in the tournament which
made it so competitive. We
wanted to prove to everyone that
we could win this tournament
without Amy (Stranahan) and
Carrie (Grzejka).”
Earlier last week the Lady
Lions suffered an emotional
defeat at the hands of
Washington and Jefferson. The
team lost by scores of 10-15,
10-15,15-13 and 10-15.
Carter 17 kills and added 10
digs. Grzejka had 10 kills in her
final home match, while George
added 35 assists.
Stranahan’s final match was
not a happy one. She hurt her
ankle dining warm-ups and was
unable to play.
Wilson said having Stranahan
on the court could have made a
big difference in the match.
“She makes such a difference
out on the court She doesn’t let
any balls hit the floor. Losing
Amy put us at a disadvantage
before the match even started."

The men’s soccer team
finished its season with a win
due to a forfeit by Allegheny
College. They finished the
season at 7-9-2.
With any sport there are
always changes in the lineup.
Coach Dan Perritano used
younger players because they
were a good nucleus of the team.
“I’m very pleased with the
whole team. I don’t like to
single anyone out because the
whole group collectively worked
hard. I’m also impressed with
the freshmen and sophomores -
they’ve really worked hard,” said
Perritano.
“Our season is not over, just
our traditional season. The hard
work is just beginning; to build
and prepare for next season. I’m
very optimistic and I look
forward to adding new talent to
the team.”
Sean Blank said, “We’ve
improved over the season,
learned to play together and most
of all learned how each other
play. We’ve established a back
bone for next season.”
