Page 4 Letter to the editor CHALKED RESPONSE To all interested: The following response is my sole opinion. In no way does it reflect the opinions of PSU, Behrend campus, The Collegian, or others. Again, this is my opinion and I thank you for letting me express it Referring back to chalk drawings/messages on the sidewalk at Behrend the night before orientation. Diversity was not the issue there. Vandalism is what occurred in the form of graffiti. Whether these chalk drawings were of: peace signs, fraternity or sorority symbols, satanic or religious emblems ... It was plain and simple “defacing of public property.” It was said that these messages were not crude or vulgar. Well, some may view things as crude and vulgar, whereas others may be flattered by them. Personally, when I saw male on male symbols, and female on female symbols, I did not find it very attractive. I even found it a little offensive. I don’t go running around drawing male on female symbols on the sidewalks (even though I am heterosexual). There are numerous bulletin boards on campus open to ALL who care to express their opinions or make a statement. They are in open, public areas for everyone to view. Use them! That’s what they are there for! As for any organization being “blamed” for this act, that was due to the FACT that they left The Behrend College Collegian welcomes letters to the editor on any subject. Opinions expressed in The Collegian are not necessarily those of The Collegian or The Pennsylvania State their “calling card." And if it was not that organization that committed the act, then I find it very indecent and rude of these individuals responsible to use that organization's “logo” (without permission, of course). Unfortunately, Pamela, I have to question YOUR wisdom; If every organization DID put chalk drawings on the sidewalks (without permission) they ALL would have been removed, regardless. What makes you (Pamela) believe that these individuals responsible are 5000.... special that THEIR graffiti would NOT be removed? I’ve been on Behrend campus for 10 years. I have never known any business, corporation, university, industry. . . etc. that CELEBRATES diversity as much as PSU does! I personally know that Penn- State Behrend exerts theirselves to great lengths and extremes to “cater” to diversity. Behrend’s so-called “perfection” is accredited to its immense support of and belief in DIVERSITY. I myself feel singled out. Maybe even discriminated against because I’m a white heterosexual male that doesn’t complain about much and enjoys life. How’s that for bureaucracy? Daniel J.
