Page 4 New P&S by John Rossomando Collegian Staff There is a new Police and Safety Manager here at Behrend. His name is Bill Donahue, he has spent the last five years as chief of campus police at Chatham College near Pittsburgh. He has been involved in campus law enforcement since 1980. Prior to his job as chief of campus police at Chatham College he worked as a campus police officer at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Donahue stated that the reason he accepted the position at Police and Safety was the size of Behrend. As Donahue made the transition into his new job, he was impressed by the professionalism of the officers at Police and Safety as well as the cooperation from Student Affairs. Donahue stressed the importance of understanding and cooperating with the campus community. "I want to try to have consistent This Week at Bruno's... ERIC GOLDEN He's funny...and cute! When asked about how students, and especially female students could feel more secure when walking on campus he responded that, "A couple of things such as a student escort service is available as well as the Student Auxiliary and crime prevention." He again stressed, "No crime is too petty to be reported, and the cooperation of students is essential to maintaining a safe campus community." Because there are only three full time police service officers, three PPGs. and t h ree put-time officers. Because of these limitations, it is necessary for students to report what they see to Police and Safety. When asked about drug and alcohol problems on campus Donahue replied, "Patrol procedures and cooperation with Student Affairs and the student judicial system are adequate for dealing with the problem." Associate professor Kenneth Fisher brings a plethora of field experience to Behrend and his engineering classes. Fisher is the in-charge faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) program and the director of the Advanced Design Consortium, has been selected by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to serve as a program evaluator for the Technology Accreditation Canmissiorn 41k ; Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET). He serves on the commission by evaluating the MET programs at other colleges and universities. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Gannon University and his master's in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Fisher has been working with technological research and development ever since. In the early 1970 s he was employed at AT&T's Bell labs where he worked on thin film electronics Faculty Profile by Ragas Warner Co&wins Ayr Kenneth in telecommunications He then spent 17 years with the American Sterilizer Company where he eventually gained the position of director of surgical product development. Fisher designed hospital surgical equipment, and he then received patents on designs that were placed into production. For some of his designs, he received recognition from the Illuminating Engineering Society and a national materials award. Before he came to teach at Behrend, Fisher taught for a while at Gannon University. He said that his reason for becoming a professor was that he always wanted to help people become engineers. He also commented, "I enjoy wonting with the students directly." He feels content at Behrend. "I like being associsted with a program in an institution that's growing. I like the fact that it's small enough to work closely with the students," Fisher said. Fisher feels that his relationship with the students is pretty open. He commented, "We interact well, My job is to be able to make them think before they graduate. They SENIORS! SENIORS!. "It makes me feel like I've accomplished something when students come up after commencement and directly thank me for helping them make career decisions and making the learning experience interesting. I still get calls periodically from graduates to let me know how they're doing," Fisher remarked. Fisher lives in Erie with his wife Nancy. They have three daughters: Julie (a 1993 graduate of Behrend), Shelly (a sophomore at Behrend), and Katie (a senior at McDowell High School). His interests include genealogy, taking walks in natural settings, travelling with his wife, and reading non technical publications. On occasion, he also watches the Cleveland Browns. His future plans include continuing to develop the Mechanical Engineering program here at Behrend. He wants to keep it technically current. -1; ... ~ ~t .. . ;
