The Steelers, with the No.l ranking defense in the NFL, manhandled the no-huddle offense of the Bills for the mere 15:09 they had possession of the ball. This was the first time the Bills were shutout since 1985 and the first for Mary Levy since 1979 when he coached the Kansas City Chiefs. In front of a national audience the Steeler defense sent three Bills' pro bowlers to the showers early. Jim Kelly, Andre Reed and Don Beebe all left the game with injuries. Barry Foster left the game in the first quarter due to a sprained ankle and will miss this week's game in Denver. Leroy Thompson, Penn State alum, replaced Foster and gained 108 yards on 30 carries. For the season, Thompson has 209 yards in only five quarters of play. It's a Burgh Thing!- The Pittsburgh Penguins, minus Mario Lemieux, thrashed the hapless Philadelphia Flyers without the services of Eric Lindros 11-5 Tuesday night. The 11 goals the Penguins scored were their biggest output of the season. Jaromir Jagr led the way with a goal and five assists. The Flyers are 1-1 against the Penguins this season, and are 0-3 overall since 61:0 PM HOME T.O. Baby! the injury to Lindros. With Lindros out, the Flyers have to look to their other key players to step it up. If they don't, it will be a long 3-6 weeks before Lindros comes back. Walkout!- The NHL referees went on strike on November 15 and so far there is no end in sight. The referees have not negotiated on a new contract since Monday, but NHL Commisioner Gary Beaman is still staying in contact with the referees and hopes to reach an agreement soon. Since the referees began their strike, the NHL has hired replacement referees and after two nights of games, the referees have done a fine job. The real test will be the consistency of the calls by the replacements and how they stand up to the level of the NHL play. Dissention in the ranks!- The Detroit Pistons are living up to their Bad Boy image once again. This time, however, its between teammates. Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer scuffled after Laimbeer set a pick to Thomas' disliking. Thomas then punched Laimbeer in the head and broke a bone in his right hand. He will probably be out 3-6 weeks. This is not the first time this has happened. In late October, Thomas broke a rib when he was elbowed by Laimbeer. The two are very good friends, but after these incidents you wonder how close they really are. Incidentally, there will be no reprimand for Laimbeer. Go figure. 11/20 11/23 11/27-28 12/3-4 12/6 1 2 / 1 0 12/22-23 1/5 1/8 1/12 * 1/15 * 1/18 * 1/22 1/24 * 1/29 2/2* 2/5 * 2/9 2/12 * 2 / 1 3 2 / 1 9 2/22 * DOUBLEHEADER WITH WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM Thursday, November 18, 1993 1993-1994 MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE OPPONENT KEUKA COLLEGE ALLEGHENY COLLEGE NAZARETH TOURNAMENT PENN STATE-BEHREND TRNY THIEL COLLEGE OLIVET COLLEGE CASTLETON STATE COLLEGE WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON SUNY - FREDONIA MUSKINGUM TOURNAMENT GROVE CITY COLLEGE WAYNESBURG COLLEGE SUNY - FREDONIA BETHANY COLLEGE ALFRED COLLEGE LaROCHE COLLEGE BUFFALO STATE UNIVERSITY OBERLIN COLLEGE GROVE CITY COLLEGE BETHANY COLLEGE DAEMEN COLLEGE WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON KEUKA. COLLEGE HILBERT COLLEGE LaROCHE COLLEGE Showdown 2!- The Miami Hurricanes and the West Virginia Mountaineers fight for positioning in the Bowl Poll this Saturday in West Virginia. The Mountaineers are ranked number eight in the country and if they beat Miami this week and upset Boston College at the end of the season, they could be looking at a title shot for themselves. Miami brings its 8- 1 record into Morgantown, looking for the win to propel them to another national title game. The Mountaineers, led by quarterback Steve Kelchner, look to end Miami's national title hopes with a win at home. Look for the Mountaineers to win a close one. My pick: Mountaineers 23, Miami 20. Fielders' Choice- This year was a milestone. Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop, Jay Bell broke Ozzie Smith's 13-year reign on the Gold Glove. The last player to win the Gold Glove before Smith was Dave Concepcion who won it in 1979. Bell won the award after leading all shortstops in fielding percentage (.986). He made a total of 11 errors, while Smith made 19. Other award winners included Barry Bonds and Larry Walker, who retained their titles, while Marquis Grissom won his first Gold Glove. In the infield the winners were Mark Grace at first base, Robby Thompson at second base and Kurt Manwaring at catcher. won for the first time. Matt Williams won his second consecutive at third base, and Greg Maddux won his fourth at pitcher.
