" Sweetie" ...Genevieve Lemon and Karen Colsten star in the
stunningly original first feature, "Sweetie", by Jane
Campion. Campion's work has been compared by Vincent
Canby, New York Times film critic, to that of David Lynch, a
well known American film maker. "Sweetie", the second film
of the four part Women's Film Series, will be shown on
Tuesday November 2, 1993 at 7:00 p.m. in Reed 117.
"The Beverly
Hillbillies:"
Here's a little
story...

"Now here's a little story
`bout a man named Jed..."
Most everyone is familiar
with the infamous television
sitcom, "The Beverly
Hillbillies," that aired years ago
for laughs upon laughs and loads
of family fun.
Personally, I thought the
series was pretty corny, and I
watched it only on occassion...
The movie, based on the
series, stars a familiar cast of
actors including Dabney
Coleman as Mr. Drysdale,
Cloris Leachman as Granny,
Rob Schneider (from Saturday
Night Live) as Tyler, Lea
Thompson as Laura, Lily
Tomlin as Miss Hathaway, and
Jim Varney as Jed Clampeu.
Special appearances by Zsa
Zsa Gabor and Dolly Parton give
some "spunk" to the film, and I
had to chuckle when I saw the
original "Jed," played by Buddy
Ebsen, in the movie.
The actors protrayed all of the
characters very impressively.
However, I must say that the
character chosen to play Jethro,
Diedrich Bader, made my skin
crawl every time I saw his face
on the screen. He simply
annoyed the hell out of me.
The storyline begins in the
Clampett's Ozark mountain
shack, where Uncle Jed strikes it
rich while hunting and accidently
encounters billions of dollars
worth of oil.
With the oil under their belts
and the inspiration of a lifetime,
the Clarnpetts are off to Beverly
Hills, California.
Their experience results in a
clash among cultures, as Elly
May (Erika Eleniak) attempts to
grow into a more "woman-like"
female, Jed tries to get "hitched"
to that lucky lady out there in
the Hills, and Granny works
persistently on her incredibly
potent elixir.
Mr. Drysdale, along with
everyone else, is after the
Clampett's fortune, and all will
go to extremes to obtain it.
"The Beverly Hillbillies" is a
corny adventure story that will
either make you laugh or
comment on its stupidity. It is
rated PG and can be viewed at a
theater near you.
