Editorial...
"I get paid to wreak havoc on the
basketball court... I am not a role model."
Last spring the NBA's Most Valuable
Player, Charles Barkley, made this
comment in his Nike ad. His ad brought
Barkley a great deal of criticism from
parents, people in the media, and some of
his peers. But, he had a good point. He has
always stated that children should look up
to his dunking ability, but they should not
look to him to be their role model. He
wants to raise WI daughter, not yours.
This conflict of public figures as
influences has surfaced again. A five
year-old boy started a fire that killed his
younger sister after watching MTV's
Beavis and Butt-head. One of the
characters in the show is a pyromaniac
and frequently states that "fire is cool."
The child's mother and the fire chief are
blaming the fire on the show. This is far
too easy.
It is much too easy to blame a fire on a
cartoon. It is much too easy to blame a
child's violent acts on an aggressive power
forward.
We constantly try to pass the blame of our
actions on someone other than ourselves.
How hard would it be for the child's
mother to explain to her son that fire is
not "cool."
She should not look to the TV to place the
blame. She needs only to look in the
mirror.
Correction...
In last week's editorial, the Student
Government Association was
incorrectly identified as the 1992.
1993 Best Student Organization. The
Multi-Cultural Council was the Best
Student Organization. SGA was the
Most Improved Student Organization.
