This year's Behrend men's
tennis team will be remembered
for many things, but nothing as
important as their establishment
of a new season victory record.
The previous high was 9, but
the men surpassed that last week
and extended it to 13.
The search for the 10th record
setting win was not exactly
easy. After sweeping Alfred
College (5-0) in the semis of
the Erie Super Sport
Tournament, Behrend was
beaten by Allegheny College 4-
1 with the only victory by the
#1 doubles tandem of Eric Good
and Jonathan Chase.
Although 2 of the 4 singles
losses came in 3 sets, it was
disheartening for the Lions to
lose to Allegheny for the second
straight year in the finals.
On April 16, the team
travelled to Rochester, NY for a
tournament. They opened
against the home team from
RIT 3-1. Buttu Das helped to
avoid a sweep by winning at 4th
singles, 6-3, 6-3.
This made Behrend 0-2 in
trying to get the all-time single
season victory total.
The answer is yes as they
thrashed Osewego College only
an hour or two after their
grievous defeat. Good, Chase,
Das, and Paul Young all won
straight set victories.
This new .found elation was
only temporary as they had to

against bracket winner Oneonta.
The score was tied at 2-2 after
singles with wins by Good and
Erik Liken, so the pressure was
on Young and Karl Van Tassel.
After a heated 7-6 first set, the
Behrend duo ran out of gas and
lost 6-2.
Following this three match
day, the men played defending
champ Nazareth in the morning
and Buffalo State in the
afternoon. Behrend hung
extremely tough against
Nazareth, but only Good could
pull out a win in the 4-1 defeat.
Unfortunately, Das and
Young/Van Tassel both lost
three set matches 7-6 in the
final set. This third setback of
the trip was rebutted by a 5-0
trouncing of Buffalo State. The
clean sweep gave the team a 2-3
record for the tournament.
Coach Dan Gallegos was very
pleased by the team's showing,
"They eclipsed the all-time title
and then some."
Good's 4-1 singles record was
not his highlight of the trip.
He was more pleased with "the
overall performance of the
team."
By defaulting their match at
Behrend yesterday, Buffalo State
gave the men a 13-7 record.
With only three more matches
to go, Coach Gallegos believes
the team is "on cruise control"
and should be ready to continue
their record-setting year.
As with the team record,
Good and Chase are hauling it
out to set the individual single
season win record.
