SPORTS BITS by Matthew D. Cissne Co-editor Phightin' Phils: The Philadelphia Phillies have the best record in baseball and are atop the National League East after the first week and a half of the baseball season. The Phils 8-1 start is their best start since 1915 when they stormed out to a perfect 8-0 record. Last season the Phils had no problem scoring runs, but they gave up more runs then they could score. This season is different. The Phils pitching has been strong so far this season. Terry Mulholland is 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA, Curt Schilling is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams has five saves and has not given up a run in five appearances. Fab Five: The Atlanta Braves knew that they would have to rely on their pitchers to carry them this season, but I am sure they did not expect their pitchers to outhit their batters. As of Monday the Braves hurlers were hitting at .211 while their (so-called) batters were averaging .188 at the plate. Knick Knack: The New York Knicks defeated the Washington Bullets 93-85 last night to keep a one game advantage over the Chicago Bulls in the race for home court advantage throughout the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs. The Knicks' win was their 17th consecutive at home. Recordßreaker: St. Louis closer Lee Smith recorded his 358th career save last night in the Cardinals' 9-7 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday night. The save put him ahead of Cincinnati Red's reliever Jeff Reardon on the Major League's all-time save list. OLDIE BUT GOODIE: Larry Holmes scored a TKO in the seventh round against Canadian Ken Lakusta on Tuesday. Holmes' win increased his career record to 57- 4. Putteman started things off for the Lions as she got on base with a single. Thirdbaseman Sue Mazur followed with another single. The Lions then worked the double steal to perfection as Mazur swiped second and Megan Musante, who was put in to pinch run for Putteman, barrelled over the catcher to put the Lions up 2-0. Rightfielder Julie Stocker drove in Mazur on a single on what proved to be the game winning hit. Behrend scored once more in the fourth frame to make the score 4-0. He said he owes much credit to Mike Kaye, the club pro at the Jackson Valley. Country Club near his home, for teaching him the finer points of the game. Other activities McLaughlin enjoys are swimming and basketball, and he hits the links as much as possible in the summer.
