Page 12 Lady Lions hope to return to postseason play by Hal D. Coffey Collegian Staff "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." This famous Dicken's quote would accurately reflect the Lady Lions' week. First, they took on a Waynesburg team that had defeated Behrend twice on the mad by an average of only six points. In order to keep their NCAA hopes alive, they needed this home victory. The Lions went out and dominated, 80-66. Coach Jenepher Banker saw this as an, "all-out emotional and physical effort". Coming into Saturday's encounter with Washington and Jefferson, the Lady Lions were 16-6. The Lady Presidents were hoping to complete a two game sweep of Behrend with a home victory. As a result of an apparent "breakdown" in their play, Banker's squad got beaten 83-72. Banker believes that the Lady Lions may have "used up all of their emotions and momentum" against Waynesburg. W&J's 6'3" center, Trina Seller's 12 points and 14 rebounds were a major factor. For the Lady Lions, Becky Swartz's game high 21 points kept Behrend in the game until the end. The loss has all but ended Behrend's quest for an NCAA bid, so now attention will be shifted to pulling out a respectable ECAC bid. With two games remaining, the Lady Lions must remain focused on each oppenent or they may lose the momentum that this season has built. That is the most popular quote used by athletes today. Unfortunately in today's world where high paid, low producing athletes run rampant, they do not always back up their words with effort. This week's Athlete of the Week is a rare example of an athlete who does give an all-out effort all of the time. Lady Lion's captain and starting point guard Wendy Ebinger is the rare example. Ebinger is averaging 8.7 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game and has dished out a team leading Thursday, February 18, 1993 of missing the NCAA's will stick out, but hopefully they'll remember how far this team has come in 3 years. 95 assists so far this season. Most importantly, Ebinger is leading the team with her ferocious determination and hustle. Assistant Coach Paul Benim said, "She puts everything she has into every game. She leads the team by example, and is not afraid to take charge. You can always count on her performing to the best of her ability every night." Ebinger enjoys her role as captain, "I've been a leader on the court since seventh grade. My position (point guard) demands some leading, I need to control the ball and set up play."
