Decision time. Do you stay
here, go to State or to
Harrisburg?
That's a question all
sophomores from mid-February
on must face, and answer. An
important development, named
Sophomore Application to Major
(SAM), will determine where
fourth semester sophomores will
spend their junior and senior
years.
Students have the option,
within the University system, to
transftr to University Park,
Harrisburg, or stay at Behrend
after they declare their major.
Luis Mongil, eighth semester
management major, chose to
remain at Behrend. "I didn't want
to go to University Park--it's too
big. Here (Behrend) you're not
just another face in the crowd,"
he said of his decision.
"I have a deep respect for the
faculty at Behrend, and I
considered it a good educational

A partnership formed between
Saint Vincent and Penn State-
Behrend will allow students to
earn a bachelor's degree in
biology and become registered
medical technologists in just four
years of undergtaduate study.
"Partherships such as this let
education and health care work
together to help the communities
they serve," Dr. John M. Liffey,
provost and dean, said of the new
program. "Saint Vincent and
Penn State-Behrend want to
address the needs, such as that for
medical technologists, identified
in the Brie area."

"At Behrend you can get to
know people pretty well--you can
make a difference," said Mongil.
Statistically speaking for the
1992 fall semester, out of 227
students who had majors that
required they transfer to
University Park, 109 of them
opted to change their major and
remain at Behrend. For spring
1993, 35 students transferred.
The total number of students now
enrolled at Behrend is 2924, after
starting the year with 3139.
Behrend offers 24 baccalaureate
degree programs in the
humanities, social sciences,
business, science, engineering
and engineering technology,
including several minors and
options. The college also offers
