The Removal of Major-General J. 0. Fremont.
This piece of rascality is attributed
by every intelligent person with whom
'we have conversed on the subject, to
Simon Cameron the Secretary of War.—
lit is an old proverb that what every
body says must be true, and in this com
munity where Simon has been known
'from his boyhood, the people are fully
-competent to judge of his qualifications
tfor any piece or low trickery that
'might subserve his owu selfish purposes,
- and they are not slow to pronounce ac
cordingly. We could pass in silent
contempt any little piece of trickery,
such as might naturally be expected of
Simon and the low illiterate gambling
gang with whom he usually associates,
bat that a great National calamity such
as the removal of General Fremont is
but too likely to prove, should be toler
• ated at his hands, or at the hands of
' any other aspiring adventurer, is more
.than the country will tamely submit to.
Nothing indeed bat the very high re
,spect that is entertained for the Presi
dent and some of the members of his
Government, prevents the people from
showing their dissatisfaction at the re
. 'nova' of Fremont.
Throughout this portion of Pennsyl
vania where Simon Cameron is best
known, he is almost unanimously re
garded as the plague spot of the Ad
ministration, and whether guilty or not,
be will be charged, and we think rightly
too, with every unseemly act of the de
partment over which he presides. In
dignation meetings ought to be held
throughout the entire Commonwealth,
find his removal from the War Depart
ment urged upon the. President by every
loyal citizen who feels for the honor of
his country, in this its day of trial. The
publication of Adjutant Gen. Thomas's
report, has fully prepared the public
mind for further perpetrations of the
War Department if it be allowed any
longer to remain in the hands of Simon
Cameron. We shall return to this pain
ful subject.
ar On Monday next, DR. GROVE, of
this borough, will leave for Missouri.
The Doctor was, some weeks since, ap
pointed by the Secretary of War to the
position of Brigade Surgeon, he now
goes to assume that position in the "De
partment of the West." We are sorry
be will find, on repairing thither that
the " Pathfinder" has been supplanted,
but never•the•less predict for the Dr. a
brilliant and useful career. Dr. %I est,
formerly of Bainbridge, takes Dr. Grove's
position in our midst, and we are assured
by those who know hits well, that the
void left by Dr. G. will be creditably
and satisfactorily filled. The Drug busi
ness, as will be seen by reference to our
advertising columns, will be conducted
by Dr. West and Harrison Roth. Har
rison is a " fixed institution" in that
establishment, and his absence "in the
wars" during the three months service,
left a want of something, which was
only removed by his return to his " old
posish."
I=
ar We are requested to give notice
that, on Tuesday evening next, at 7
'o'clock, ft free TEMPERANCE LECTURE, the
tirst of a series to be given during the
ensuing season, under the auspices of
the Good Templars ,of this borough, will
be delivered by Wm. Nicholson, Esq.,
late Grand Scribe of the Sons of Tem
perance, of Pennsylvania, in the Tem
perance Halt, Marietta. The public are
freely invited to attend.
per' Frederick S. Bletz, of Columbia,
bas been awarded by the Quartermaster's
Department at Washington, the con
tract for supplying the government with
one million of feet of lumber, seven hund
red and fifty thousand feet to be pine
boards and plank, and two hundred and
eig'hty-five thousand feet hemlock scant
ling. The price allowed is $l5 43 per
thousand feet. The bids ranged as high
as 835 per thousand. Mr. Bletz was the
lowest and best bidder, and hence the
contract was awarded to him.
wr The following gentlemen were e
lected on Monday last, officers. for the
ensuing rtir, of the Marietta and Mount
Joy Turnpike Road Company :
A. B. Hackman,
J. L. Shultz,
S. C. Hiestand,
A. H. Musselman,
J. G. Hoerner.
J. E: Ere,ybill, President.
J. W. Clark, Secretary and Treasurer,
The 'County Commissioner pub
sh a list of volUnteers from Lancaster
kounty, enrolled and mustered into ser
vice ander orders of the Governor of
Pennsylvania, with the weekly allowance
made by the Board of Relief to their
families or persons dependent upon
them. The whole number of recipients
is 705, of which 627 are from the city ;
14 from Marietta ; 1.0 from Bainbridge ;
26 from Monet joy ; 20 from Safe Har
bor; 5 fr um Elizabethtown, and 3 from
Millersville. Taking $1.75 per week as
the ..average allowance the amount paid
not weekly would he $1283.75, or should
the same number continue in service
for the year, the , amount annually would
foot up the snug sum. of sixty-four thous
and ono hundred and fiftY-five dollars.
HOSPITAL STORES, e ladies
further acknowledge—s2.oo from Mrs.
Christian Stibgen, and $6.00 from D.
Harry, Esq., being his quota of subscrip
tion to the Volunteer Fund ;—Also,
stores from Mrs. E. D. Roath, Mrs.
Adams, Mrs. M, Rambler, and C. C. P.
Grosh.
Mrre socks are needed—knitters can
be supplied with yarn by calling on Mrs.
A. B. Crrosh, or any of the Committee.
Tile Sanitary Commission at Washing
ton appeals to the women of America
for more bedding, delicacies, &c., for the
sick. A.nd 500,000 pairs of mittens are
needed for our brave soldiers this win
ter. They should be knit with a fore
finger and a thumb.
Young ladies ! now is your time to
serve your country. Knit at every leis
ure moment—carry your knitting when
you go on calls and visits—knit for your
country ! If you do not know how,
learn immediately. The elder ladies
and matrons will gladly teach you. Our
Country expects every woman to do her
duty! A. B. G.
GEN. HEINTZELNAN.—The citizens of
Buffalo, claiming Gen. Heintzelman as
a townsman, says the Albany Knicker
bocker have petitioned the President to
appoint him Major General. The list
of signers, beginning with Millard 'Fill
more, is such as any man might be proud
to 'receive a compliment from. The
citizens of Albany should have an in
terest in the welfare of the gallant Gen
eral. His "better-half" is a full-blooded
Albanian. Many of the middle-aged
ladies and gentlemen of Albany who
frequented the dancing parties at Stan
wix Hall some twenty-odd years ago,
cannot have forgotten the amiable and
beautiful "Maggie" Stewart. She is now
the wife of Gen. Heintzleman, one of
the bravest generals in the army. Why
should not Albanians interest them
selves in his behalf as well as Buffaloni
ens ? Let a movement be made at once
in behalf of the gallant offcer. He has
the experience and capacity for the
position. To which Forney's Press adds:
This is a very proper compliment to
Brigadier General Heintzelman, but he
happens to 'be a citizen of Manbeim
township, Lancaster county, Pennsyl
vania.
er The late storm paid sad havoc on
the Chesapeake Bay ; out of twenty
boats in one steamboat tow fifteen were
lost ; Thomas Zell and Wm. Tredenick
of this place had two in that number,
loaded with coal for Baltimore, said to
have been sunk in 70 feet of water, a
complete loss. Mr. McConkey of
Wrightsville had one lost—loaded with
oats. Two or three lives were lost—one
account says one man and two women.
fir We learn from the Mount Joy
Hearld ; that Jacob E. Cassel is with
Gen. Negley's Brigade in Kentucky, as
Quartermaster of Col. Stambaugh's Reg
iment.
ar The Marietta and Ma.ytown Turn
pike Road Company re-elected the old
board.
Cir There is no act of the Adminis
tration which will better inspire our
soldiers than the determination of the
War Department to promote men from
the ranks who display unusual courage
on the field, and show by their skill and
intelligence that they are capable of
command. Our volunteer force is a pe
culiar one. There probably never was
an army assembled in which there was
the same amount of intelligence and
scholastic acquirements in the ranks as
among our volunteers.' Let them feel
that the way to honor is open to them,
and they will soon show the qualities
which are necessary to reach the reward
promised.
KW George B. McClellan was born
in Philadelphia on the 3d of December,
1826, his father being an eminent physi
cian of that city. .At the age of sixteen,
or in 1842, he entered the West Point
Academy, and in 1846, at the age of
twenty, was graduated second in his class.
On the Ist of July of that year he was
brevetted second lieutenant of engineers.
By an act of Congress passed during the
May previous, a company of sappers,
miners, and pontoniers was added to the
engineer corps, and in this company Mc-
Clellan was commissioned.
tag' The question of General McClel
lan's successor in the command of the
army of the Potomac is already under
discussion. General Halleck, now in
Washington city, is most talked of. For
the present, however, atleast, he will
give, as heretofore, hisparticular atten
tion to the army of the Potomac.
Cr There is no foundation whatever
for the impression that the national army
is about going into winter quarters in
front of Washington. General McClel
lan has no such thought, and he is in the
unembarrassed control of the army of
the United States.
eir The storm of Saturday night was
very severe in Chesapeake bay. Several
canal barges are reported ashore, and
some supposed to have foundered, with
loss of life. Several wharves at Balti
more were overflowed.
ear The late election in New York
resulted in the election of the People's
Union ticket by an- immense majority.
Col. Raymond, of the New York Times,
is elected to the assembly.
