Patent Metallic Sole.
A NEW INVENTION.
WETTINCI THE FEET 15 the most
prolific cause of disease and death known to
humanity. It is almost sure to bring on a cold; and
colds, neglected, and often when not neglected, lead to
fevers or to coughs and tatal consumptions. It is in
recognition of this truth thai the inventive talent of
the country ha for years been devising some method,
or attempted to devise it, for keeping the feet dry, and
yet that should not give inconvenien , e to the wearer.
Rubber nhoes ' in one fo'em or another, have' hitherto
been our reliance; but It is well known, as among
their many evils, that while they beep the lees dry
from external moisture, they sweat taein over much,
and by thua inducing au undue tenderness Increase a
susceptlblll yto colds rather than otherwise. They
are also cumbersome to the feet, and withal are very
expensive. The demand Is for •omethlng that shall
make the ordleary Bout and Shoe impervious to water,
without affect lug their elegance or duru illty, and, it
.possible, without adding sensibly t the cost or their
manufacture. These, if will be conceded, are most im

From Roy. W. D. Seigfried, Pastor of Twelfth Bap

Gentlemen:—l have recently een laboring under
the distressing effects of indigestion, accompanied by
a prostration of-the nervous system. Numerous rem
edies were recommended by friends, and some of them
tested, but without relief. Your Heoffand's German
Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried
them, and whose favorable mention of these bitters
Induced rue to try them. I must confess thab had
an aversion to Patent Medicines from the "thousand
and one" quack "Bitters," whose only aims seems to
be to palm off sweetened and drugged liquor upon the
community in a sly way, and the tendency of which,
I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard. Upon
learning that yours was really a medicinal prepara
tion I took it with happy effect.- jts action, not only
upon the stcmach, but upon the nervous system, was
prompt and gratifying. I feel that I have derived
great and .pormanunt benefit from the use of a few
bottles.
Prom Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., editor of the En

Altaough not disposed to favor or recommend Patent
Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingre
dients and effects, I yet knew of no sufficient reasons
why a muse may not testify to the benefits In believes
himself to have received from any simple preparation,
in the hope that he may thus contribute to the bene
fit of others. Ido this the more readily in regard to
lloolland's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. O. M. Jack
son,. of this city, because I was prejudiced against them
for many years, under the Impression that they were
cblelly an alcoholic mixture. lam indebted to my
'friend, Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this
prejudice by proper teats and for encouragement is. try
them when suffering. from great and long continued
debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters at
the beginning of the present year, was followed by
evident relief and restoration to a degree of bodily and
mental vigor which I had not felt for six months be
fore, and had almost despaired of regaining I there
fore thank God and my friend for directing me to the
use of them.
Prom the Rev. E. D. Fonda, Assistant Editor Chris

I have derived decided benefit from the use of Roof.
land's Gorman Bitters, and feel it my privilege to rec
ommend them as a most valuable tonic, to all who aro
suffering from general debility or froth diseases arising
from derangement of the liver.
Yours, trulj. R. D. FENDALL.
From Rev. D. Merrill°, Pastor of the Paseyunli Bap
tist Church, Phila.
From the many respectable recommendationsliven
given to Dr. Ifoofiand ' s Bet man Bitters, I was induced
to give them a trial. After using several bottles I
found them to be a good remedy for debility, and a
most excellent tonic) for the stomach.
