now with her, a good-looking youth of
sixteen, wonderfully tall for his,age. I
never in my life saw both adoration as
there exists between these two. Sarah
says she suffered more than words can

while in America, and the young gen
tleman says he hopes.his chere mere a--

ame Bearnhardt will take him on, her
proposed tour through Europe, and as
she is not willing his studies should be
interrupted, she will take his tutors a

Sometimes contracted during illness,
sometimes taken up to abate a longing
for intoxicating liquors, vometimes
adopted to all iy - nervous stiff-tiring, the
deadly habit seldom deserts its victims.
The sufferers from narcotism through
the use of these drugs may be 'number
ed by the t,119 of thousands. Every
druggist has them among his' custo
mers. Many of them steal into - the
store with a cautions look, as if
they feared they might be watched or
their purpose would be read before they
disclosed it; and others impart the bus
iness in a confidential tone; often at
tempting to convey
_the impression , that
the nareetias is meant for another per
sun. Nothing-is more marked than the
injurious effect which the practice ex
erts upon , the moral faculties. The
doses these wretched people learn to
bear are sufficient, perhap, to kill an
ordinary person, and the• quantity is
increased from month to month until
the suicidal work is completed. The
fatal effect of such' familiarity with the
forms of opium often appears in a start
ling way when persons addicted to
opium-eating prescribe their beloved
medicine for otheis.
Miss Jennie Henri° is the name of a
yonng woman who has won the admira
tion of the people of Kansas. Some
time ago she secured a tract of land on
Ash creek. . "To show what an enter.
".'ng girl can do," says the Legan
Enterprise, "we will state that she came
to that .place several years ago with
barely enough means to sustain herself
after entering - the land. She went to
work by.the week and - :the money she
earned was invested in improvements
on the land until now, at which time
she has about thirty - acres tinier culti
vation, a comfortable honsP, well fur
nished, and other valuable improve
ments. By' her industry and persever
ance she has gained the admiration of
all who know her. She will soon; have
a deed to one of the best tracts of land
in that country. We take pride sin

my scalp , aud, in spite of all I co uld do, with the

surely extended, until a year , ago this winter it
covered my entire person in form of dry scales.
For; the last three years I have been unable to
do any labor. and maffering intensely all the ,
time. Every morning there could be nearly a
