Anyone who ever has watched a cloud
of billowing smoke pouring from a
factory knows only that the air is being
polluted. But inspectors from the State
Department of Environmental
Resources (DER) can actually read the
smoke and determine its degree of
density.
DER inspectors soon will be brushing
up on their smoke-reading skills at the
University's Visible Emissions School.
The school, operated by the Center for
Air Environment Studies, is held four
times a year during term breaks.

"Each group of 25 readings must be
read within a specified degree of ac
curacy," says Robert Heinsohn,
associate. professor or mechanical
engineering who is in charge of the
school.
Heinsohn says few inspectors recertify
after the first set of 50 plumes, but 80 to
90 per cent pass after several tries. Up to
six tests are given daily.

John Davis, who conducts some of the
classes, says the school is the only one in
the East that follows federally-approved
methods and is open to everyone.
Gary Triplett, head of the DER
Division of Air Resources Management,
says the training is vital. "We feel that
inspectors should certify and train every
six months to keep their eyes calibrated,
