But inspectors from the State Department of Environmental Resources (DER) can actually read the smoke and determine its degree of density. DER inspectors soon will be brushing up on their smoke-reading skills at the University's Visible Emissions School. The school, operated by the Center for Air Environment Studies, is held four times a year during term breaks.
