FRIDAY MORNING
Saturday Weekly Poet—Advertising for the Holi
daye.—Dealers in fancy goods, toys, holiday books
and Christmas presents of every desciiption, should
remember that the Saturday Weekly Post reaches
Several thousand subscribers on the Saturday be
fore Christmas, nearly all of whom come to Pitts
burgh to buy their presents, and most of whom will
be here on Monday or Tuesday. Advertisements
would be the very means of reaching your country
friends and increasing your sales, gentlemen. They
should be sent in before 10 A. M. today.
Democratic City Executive Committee.—A meeting
Of the Democratic City Executive Committee was
held yesterday morning, at the St. Charles HoteL
The following members of the Committee were
present; John Dunn, chairman ; Wm. J. Anderson,
secretary; William Alexander, John IL Bailey, Win.
Bennett, Thos. S. Rowley, Henry Rea, M. Connolly,
B. Flanogin, and F. Felix.
J. IL Bailey presented the following resolution,
which was seconded by F Felix :
Resolved, That the Democracy of the city of Pitts
burgh are hereby requested to meet at the usual places
of holding primary meetings, on Saturday, the 22nd
inst., between the hours of three and five o'clock, P.
151.., and elect five delegates from each ward, to meet
in Convention on the following Wednesday, to decide
upon the best course to be pursued by the Democratic
party in the approaching municipal election.
Mr. Bailey, in offering the above resolution, pre
faced it with a few remarks, in which he said he was
in favor of the party making a nomination, as its dis
tinctive organization was sunk last year by support
ing Mr. Vols. This Committee had no right to as
sume the responsibility of deciding whether a candi
date should not be nominated, and the least it could
do would be to refer the subject to the Democratic
Mr. Anderson said the Executive Committee had
assumed the responsibility last year, and it had the
same power now. He was opposed to calling a Con
vention, and in favor of pledging the party to Mr.
Vols.
Mr. Alexander declared such a course would be
very improper, and thought the people should be al
lowed to decide the matter for themselves.
Mr. Bennett was opposed to calling a Convention.
and in favor of the Committee endorsing either Voir.
or Long for Mayor.
Messrs. Connolly and Anderson said they had sign
ed the call for Vole, and did not feel inclined to back
out from his support.
Mr. Dunn assumed it would be impolitic to declare
fur Vole, as the Democratic party was divided in
opinion as to the propriety of supporting him.
Mr. Bailey said it was not altogether clear that
Vole would be elected even with the assistance of
members of the party. If the Committee endorse
they would probably be defeated ; nothing more
than this could happen with a Democratic candidate.
All Democrats would cordially vote for a candidate
of their own politics, and his election would he more
certain than that of Vole.
After some farther discussion, participated in by
nearly, all the members of the Committee, the reso
tras put Co vote and carried.
Tho Committee then adjourned.
F ! tlairf Pretew-es.—William Hiller and Adam Ban
eriel4 wee held to bail, yesterday, by Aid. MeMas
tart; for obtaining $1.50 by false representations from
John Urban. The prosecutor is a blind man, having
lost his eye eight by. an explosion in a copper mine
on Lake 'Superior, and boarded with Hiller, oho
keeps a tavern in the Diamond. Biller, finding out
that Urban had considerable money, borrowed $l5O
from him, and gave his note for the amount, Boner
lain, at the same time telling him he would go lid
lees security, and pretending to sign the note ; but
Instead of doing this he wrote on the note, above in,
name, that he was only a witness and would not be
responsible. Urban, ignorant of this, paid over the
money, but soon afterward. ascertained from a friend
the deception practised, and brought suit as above.
Holiday Preacutc—We see on every street prepa
rations to make a display of such articles as are tom
e ally In demand for holiday presents. It has become
the general custom to make presents on those days,
much to the annoyance of some who are a little abort
of funds. Whether the custom is a good one or a
bad one, it will prevail for a time. The worst evil of
it is that it is generally thought necessary to give ar
ticles of luxury, not utility—an ornament is thought
a more appropriate gift than a useful thing. The
trade in jewelry and toys is generally very active
from Christmas to New Years. and many a purse is
perceptibly relieved of its harden before a numerous
circle of friends is duly remembermL For our part
we think well selected books are among the most ap
propriate and useful presents.
Accident on the Chartiers Railroo<l.—A serious ac
cident occurred on section 7 of the Chartiers Rail
road, on Tuesday, by which a man named Barkley
Cane was so seriously injured that his recovery is
extremely doubtful. The men employed on the tun
nel at that section put in a heavy blast, which did
not go off; they replaced the fuse with a new one,
which convoyed the fire to the charge sooner than
anticipated, and a premature explosion occurred. A
large stone, thrown out by the force of the blast,
struck Cane between the shoulders, injuring the left
shoulder blade, anti producing a dreadful contusion
of the spine. He was placed under care of Dr. John
Calahan, Sr., who, however, gives bat little hope
of •his recovery.
Chn'iainas and New Year, Presents.—We observe
that oar friends Iteinemon , 1 / 4 Co., who are located on
Fifth street, directly opposite our office, have just re
ceived a magnificent assortment of articles suitable
for Christmas and New Year Gifts. Any one desirous
of purchasing a watch, breast-pin, ring, or any ar
ticle of jewelry or fancy goods, for presentation to a
sweetheart or friend, will be certain to find some
thing at the establishment of Heineman tr. Co., ap
propriate to the occasion. Their stock includes an
almost endless variety of jewelry of the latest and
most beautiful patterns, which they will dispose of
at prices extremely low.
The Excelsior Corn Sheller.—Three-fourths of
the rights for this superior machine have been dis
posed of, but of the territory yet remaining, a por
tion is the best in the Union. Of the merits of the
Excelsior we will only now say it is the best which
over came under our observation. But lot every one
go and look at it fir himself, when we are sure they
will come to the same conclusion. A machine of
such simple construction that it cannot possibly get
out of order, but which will shell a bushel per minute
when worked by a half grown boy, is one of the in
ventions of the age. It is exhibited on Smithfield
street, opposite the post office.
Accident.—On Wednesday afternoon, a section of
an iron railroad bridge, which is in process of erec
tion in the boiler yard of William Barnhill 1: Co.,
on Penn street, fell down, injuring a man named
Patrick 'Ryan, pretty severely. The large plates of
iron of which the bridge is composed fell over upon
several of the workmen, but fortunately did not in

Panorama of California and Central Alneriea.—
This Panorama was placed on exhibition lust night
at Apollo Hall, Fourth street- As a work of art, it
is really fine, and gives a truthful representation of
the Isthmus of Panama, and the Laud of Gold. It
has been exhibited in all the principal cities of this
country, and has everywhere met with success. We
doubt not it will meet with proper encouragement in
this city.
Child Burned.—A child, three years of age, son of
Samuel Zinc, of Pennsylvania Avenue, was severely
burned yesterday morning, by accidently setting fire
to his clothes, ?chile playing in front of the grate.
His neck, face, and breast were badly burned, and
his recovery is very doubtful.

NEW HORSE SHOE MACHINE.—We,
the undersigned, having evemincii the Horse Shoe
Machine invented by Mr. ROBERT GRIFFITHS, and now refi

entire completeness of the machine and the ease with which
it does its work. It makes about ten Shoes per minute, of
excellent form, and without any straining or effort—working
es easily when making Shoes as when turning around idle.
The Shoos are formed on dies while the iron is hot, being
Kwedged and punched at the same time. By changing the

MONEY MARKET
There is no change in the money market in this
city. Our Banks still continue to discount unexcep
tionable paper to the full extent of their means, and
we infer from the fact that but a small amount of
good paper is offered in our streebg, that there is no
unusual stringency bore. Exchange on the east still
continues at par, nor is it likely that in this particu
lar there will be any change.
The statement of the New York Banks, for the
week ending December 15th, shows a further increase
in loans of $610,235, making a total increase from
the lowest point on the 17th ult. of $1,800,000. The
specie has deelined $260,000, and the deposites
$1,239,593. In consequence of the steady increase
in the discounts by the Banks in that city money
was easier. The market was generally steady,
particularly with regard to specie, and was not
disturbed * either by interior exchanges or the
moderate export to Europe. At the close of Monday
afternoon, the Time says, the Banks held nearly
thirteen millions, a million and a half being sddcd
from California after the averages of the week acre
made up.
An important Banking case has been decided be
fore the Court of Appeals of New York, in reference
to illegal money contracts, viz:
"The SL Lawrence Bank way organized in 183 s,
under the general banking law of that year, and in
December, 1841, suspended specie payments.
" In the spring of 1812 the cashier sold and trans
ferred three promissory notes belonging to the Bank.
made by George Armstrong. and amounting to about
$2OOO, to the defendant Phillips, for the sum of
about $l2OO. The defendant was then one of the
directors of the Bank, and hail been from its orgaiii
nation.
" The object of the Cashier in making the side was
to obtain funds to pay a debt of $2,000, which the
St. Lawrence Bank owed to the American Exchange
Bank, the payment of which was secured by a pledge
of $5,000 of the circulating ti,tes of the St. Lae.
rupee Bank. The money paid by the d e f e ndant was
so applied. There had been nu previous resol
of the Board of Directors authorizing the sale of the
miles of the Cashier.
"On the appointment of the Receiver, he filed a
bill, in the late Court of Chancery, to net aside the
sale of the notes, on the ground that the transfer war
illegal.
" The Supreme Court had decided that the trans
action wan void, but allowed the defendant the money
paid by him.
"The Court of Appeals have yet erred the deetsion
of the lower court, and a judgment is entered f the
Receiver for the value of the macs. or the money vol
lee-Led upon them, with costs."

Many of our most worthy citizens testify to its wonderful

all cases of debility or weakness of any kind is almost in

and in others effected a decided cure.

After taking it for ono week, I must state I was a sound

had no return of the chills and fever whatever."

Mr. Silas Liscomb, of Birmingham, says: "I have found

Mr. A. S. Nicholson, of Pittsburgh, also remarks that ho
has experienced much relief from its use for headache.
A Ilalawices reziimony.—Jacob Rinskes, Hying in the
Holland settlement of Sheboygan, 'Wisconsin, soya: "After
suffering for some time the misery attending an utter prose

The fact of this remedy being in such high repute among
the Hollanders in Wisconsin, Michigan,New York—in fact,
in every Holland settlement in the nited States—argues
much In its favor.
Mr.. John Davidson, living ten miles above Pittsburgh, on

INVIGORATING CORDIAL,
A PIIENOMEWO_V LV .211EDICINE.
Health Restored and Life Lengthened
MORSE'S INVIGORATING ELIXIR,
IT WILL replace weakness with strength,
Incapacity with efficiency, irregularity with uniform and
natural activity, and this not only without hazard of reac
tion, bat with a happy effort on the general organization.
itt- Bear in mind that all malailimi, wherever they begin,
finish with the nervous system, and that the paralization of
the nerve of motion and fieLlSaiioll is physical death. Bear
in mind, also, that for every kind of nervous disease, the
Elixir Cordial is the only reliable preparation known.
No langrimps can convey an adequate idea of the immedi•
ate and almost miraculous change which it occasions in the
diseased, debilitated and shattered nervous system, whethir
broken down by excess, weak by nature, or impaired by
sickness—the unstrung and relaxed organization le at once
braced, revivified and built up. The mental and physical
symptoms of nervous disease vanish together under its influ
ence. Nor is the effect temporary; for the Cordial propertiel_
of the medisine reach the constitution ids tf and restore it
to its normal condition.
Confusion, giddiness, rush of blood to the head, melancholy,
debility, hysteria, wretchedness, thoughts of selfdestriaction
—fear of insanity, dyspepsia, general prostration, irritabili
ty, nervousness, inability to sleep, disease incident to males,
decay of the propagating functions, hysteria, monomania,
vague terrors, palpitation of the heart, impotency, constipa
tion, etc., from whatever causes arising is, if there be any
reliance to be places' on human testimony, absolutely infal
lible. . _
The unparalli led effects of this great mtoratiXO In all
complaints incident to females, mark a HOW gra in the annals
of medicine. Thouaands of stimulants have been invented—
thousands of iuvigorants concocted--all purporting to ho
specified in the varions diseases and derangements to which
the delicate formation of woman render her liable.
EVERY WOMAN OF SENSE,
Who suffers from weaknesa, derangement, nervoustis, ter
morn, pains in the back, or any other disorder, whether pe
culiar to her sex, or common to both sexes—should glee the
Invigorating Cordial a trial.
Or others, will rind this Cordial, after they have used a bot
th, or two, a thorough regenemtur of the system. In all
directions are to be found the happy parents of healthy o&
spring, who would not have been so but for this extraordi
nary preparation. And it is equally potent for the many
lisoases for which it is recommended. Thousands of young
turn have been restored by using it, and not in a single in
stance has it failed to benefit them.
Or consumptive habits, are restored by the use of a bottle or
two to bloom and vigor, changing the skin from a pals yel
biw, sickly color, to a beautiful florid complexion.
These are some of the aid and melancholy effects produced
by early habits of youth, viz: weakness of the back and
limbs, pains in the head, dimness of sight, logs of muscular
power, palpitation of the heart, dyspepsia, nervous irrita
bility, derangement of the digestive functions, general de
bility, symptoms of ixnenunptions, etc.
Mentally, the fearful effects on the mind are much to be
dreaded. lams of memory, confession of ideas, depression of
spirits, evil forebodings, aversion to society, ...if-distrust,
love of solitude, timidity, etc., are some of the evils produced.
All thus aillict,d,
Should reflect that a sound mind and body are the most no
te:wary requisites to promote connubial happiness; indeed,
without these, the journey through life becomes a weary
proopeet hourly darkens tho view; the mind

choly reflection that the happiness of another becomes
blighted with your own.
