THE ILITIIIIAIRY Pen% 1,
Fatima Illoannia-Pitar,
To Ow Nephyr Spirt
Spirit of the mild west vied;
01 softly Own thy sunset bowers straytw.
Thou meat the cool founts and amen to la,
With the rosy Imam plum:
Ay! when the eosins! eve
In summers skies is drearily lines,
Then consist and the streatnieti gentle wavW
Tells of thy fa wing wing.
And the dew-freshened flower.
'Neath the burden of thy viewless tone; " - begiit
low;
While passive beauty in her aise•gruwn bower,
Feels thy kua TA her brow.
The voice of thy soft breath,
Like seraph language in the listening sly,
It falls upon the car and the heart 'swath
Its tones, melts to a sigh:
Of wafted on thy wing,
A pleasant stroll for flowers, fountains, flak
Till wearied with a joyous journeying,
A dream of rest it yields.
Spirit of the balmy West!
A summer sunset beams not on my heart,
But I would base thy pinions, fairy like, to rest
And teach me what thou art.
SJ beautiful! sweet lisp!r!
Thy errand o'er the bright an I blossomed earth.
Seemeth like buried love returned. ti whisper
in our hearts pietyes worth!
And should thy summer call
Reach us unheeded, mid the thoughtless milk
There is a season when thy tones will fall
On our hearts fearfully loud.
When Autumns rougher gale
Sweeps from the creaking boughs the yel'iro
leaf,
Thy sad moan will be heard in the seer vales
Like mortals called in grief!
A Touching Story.
We find the followiog harrowing nar—
alive related in the Ledger of Friday last;
It was hut yesterday that we were made
acquainted with . the history of a family of
females—an aged mother and three daugh
ter,—who, before the failure of the United
States Bank, were worth thirty thousand
dollars. The whole of this sum was in—
vested in the inetituticn named, and from
the whole of which they could not now
probably realize over one hundred or two
hundred dollars! They dressed and lived
during their prosperity as their amount - of
property seemed to justify, and without
preparing themselves in any particular vo
cation with which to struggle against com,
petition for their living. When adversity
came they could turn their hand to no oc
cupation with nrofir, even had labor been
offered them. The apparel they possessed
when their misfortune fell upon them, en.
abled them to attend their church and ap*
pear in the street respectably clad, until
within a short time. It was known that
they were among the victims of the plun—
derers of the United States Bank, but their
friends and acquaintances supposed them
far removed from destitution. Within the
last few months it was first observed that
one less than the usual number appeared
at the same time in their place at church.
Then, subsequently, was noticed that:
two of their number were absent, though
not always the same. So, on receiving
the calls of their friends, first one, two, and
then three, of the family failed to make
their appearance. This, at length led to
a pressing inquiry as to the cause, and to a
recital of their wretched condition. Their
wearing apparel and every thing else that
could be converted into the means for pro
curing nourishment, had gone, article by
article, until dresses were not left fit for
more than one or two of their number to
make themselves public in—and for the
last six weelcs before the armament of their
condition, they declared that not an article
of food kind except potatoes had passed the.
lips of one of them! It would be imptasi—
ble to describe the mental anguish that
was experienced in parting with the many
links of former comforts, as they were, one
by one, banded over to the tender mercies
of the pawnbroker; perhaps mementoes of
a dead husband and father; tokens of affec.
tanks and love that the mother would not
have parted with for her own Sufferings,
but which were yielded up to save .her
children from want --end which those chil
dren reluctantly consented to share. for the
purpose of saving the author of their being
from the gnswings of hunger.
