    WINTER.
NSLATEO I ROM THE "FQXO Of BERANOER,'
BT C. . O.
Out fcalhet'd eunier-rhoir lias fled!
Grim. Winter, ith his icy shield,
. SpreaiTnvcr city, wood and field,
Hath driven thorn afsr in dread.
The Greybeard o'er my window pan
T. aces in frost, hia ellln flowers i
And my poor spaniel shivering, cower.
From his cold Rripe, nnd howls with pair,
Let's wait no lunger ! light the fire!
Heap the abundant fagota higher,
And warm our lieaita to mirth again !
The alindo-vs lengthen nnd thenteht
Drives her Mack chariot o'er the snows (
But Love protect ua, dearest Hose !
We care not for the Day God's flight!
Lo ! here come a joyous twain ! .
A faithful friend with his fair brid
This evening' gave!) divide,
' And share our hearth, and j -in cur strain.
Such pleasure laughs ut frost, 1 trow,
And adds unto our fireside's glow,
While our hearts warm Jo mirth again !
Anon, beneath the shaded light
Is s read the evening's repast !
This kiss then, Rose, must he the last
Ere we of Bacchus crown the rite !
Our friend, at table now, relates
The story of a brigand Cliiof;
Then I rehearse beyond belief
Hobgoblin tales, of olden dates j
While flames in spectral column roll
From the red punch within the bowl,
And thus our mirth still scintillates !
Grim Winter! in thy fettcra strong
Chain as thou will the bloom of Earth,
Tbou cans'l not chill pur hearty miith,
Nor frecie our genial tide of songl
Our spirit round our hearth create
A kingdom, from whose ature skies
The Summer sunshine never dies.
While Love i sovereign of the State!
So, with closed doors, our fire still bums
Until the Rose", reign returns.
And still onr mirth doth scintillate!

TnK Mormon War. A resolution is beforo
the Toones-sce Legislature, plcdping the co
operation of the State with the Kxecutive of
the United States in suppressing the civil
war existing in the Territory of Utah. There
will be no lack of aid to the Government in
such a contest. Public sentiment is so strong
ogainst Mormon practices and M'ormon ns
euTiptiou and insolent defiances of the Gov
ernment that it will not take long to raise a
force sufRdient to wipetha saints out of exis
tence, if the contost ever comes to blows.
Hut Brigham Young, with all its bravado,
docs not desiro hostilities. If by burning
baggage trains and making a show of fight
ogainst a smaU force he can stop the nearer
approach of the United States troops till
spring it is probable that by that time, the
whole Mormon population will be off, bag and
baggage, to some other country less likely to
beinvuded by the roving and restless odven
tnrersff this country. No community liko
that of tho Mormons can exist in any civilized
oommunity. It has only grown np to its mon
strous proportions by the indifTorence and con
tempt with which in its beastliness it has been
hitherto regarded. Us progress is "inimical
to virtue and its pretentions dangerous nnd
Insulting to liberty. Its powers must be
broken and its pernicions principles be dedi
cated entirely from the hold it has had social
ly upon so large a class of its deluded follow-
ers. I'ublic Ledger.
Tim Qinrss op Fiiance. The Dublin

sorrow and sin. A contemporary, somtuing
np the statement, says:
Of the others, eleven were divorced; two
died dy tho executioner; nine died very young;
soveo were soon widowed; threo were cruelly
traduced; three were exiled; three were bad
in different degrees of evil; the priBuevs and

Jttporl of the Committee appointed to tujxtin-
tend the Burning of the Iron Safct, at Head-
vig, Filruary 27, 1857.
HmCme, March 4.
The undersigned, members of the committee,
do respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes
originally agreed upon by Farrels &. Herring and
r.vans & Watson, placed aide by side in a fur
r.ace, vii: The Safe Inuse by the Paymaster of
lllo 1 hilauelpnia and Reading Railroad I'ompa,
ny, in his office at Reading, manufactured by
r arrets & Herring, and the Safe, in use by H.
A. Land, in his store, manufactured by Evans
A. Watson, and put in books and papers precisely
alike.
The'fir was started at F o'clock, A. M.,and
kept up until four cords of green hickory, two
cords dry oak and halt cliesnut Inn wood were
entirely Consumed, the whole under the superin
tendence of the subscribers, members of the Com
miltee. The Safes were then cooled off with
water, after which they were opened, and the
books and papers taken out by the Committee
and sent to II. A. J.anlz s store for public exam
ined and marked by the Committee. J he books
and papers taken from the Safe manufactured
ny r artels 4- Herring were in our judgment,
damaged fully fifteen per cent, more than those
taken from Evans & Watson's Safe.
We believe the above to have been a fair and
impartial trial of the respective qualitiea of both
bales.
JACOI1 II. DY8H BR,
DANIEL S. HUNTER.
Having been absent during the burning, we
fullv coincide with the above statement of the
condition of the papers and books taken out of
