The undersigned, members of the committee
do respectlully report, that we saw tlie two Safes
originally agreed upon by r urrelsi Herring and
Lvans U W atsnn, placed side by side in a fur.
r.ace, viz: The Safe in use by the Paymaster of
the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Compa
ny, in his ollice at Reading, manufactured hy
Farrels & Herring, and tbe Safe in use by 11.
A. Lanti, in his store, manufactured by Evans
dr. Watson, and put in books and papers precisely
suite.
Thcire was started at 8 o'clock, A. M.,nd
kept up until four corda of green hickory, two
cords dry oak arid half cheenut top wood were
entirely consumed, the whole under the superin-
lenuence oi tne sutucririers, members of the Com
tmttee. U he Safes were then cooled off with
water, after which they were opened, and the
books and papers taken out by the Committee
and sent to H. A.Lanti's store for public exam
ined and marked by the Committee. The books
and papers taken from tho Sale manufactured
by Farrels Herring were in our judgment,
damaged fully fifteen per cent, more than those
taken from Evans & Watson's Safe.
We believe the above to have been a fair and
impartial trial of the respeetiva qualities of both
Safes.
