. . ARRIVAL OFTHK
A 11C TIC
FOUR DAYS LATER FROM EUROPE.
The Collins steamship Arctic, Capl. Luce,
from Liverpool, at 104 o'clock, A. M., May
9lh, arrived off Samly Hook, New Yoik, on
Salurlayvvenins at o'clock, bul owing to
the dense fog, was unable to come up to
the city till half-pant 7 o'clock yesterday
morning.
The Arctic brings ninety-nine passenger,
amonjf whom we notice Horace Smith.
Esq , United States Consul for Portugal, and
bearer of despatches for the U. S Legation
fct Lisbon.
ENGLAND.
Little worth reporting has occurred since
the sailing of Ihe Cambria. The case of a
feritwh subject, named Murray, sentenced to
tleath at Rome, for political offences, was
before the House of Lords on Monday as
was also that of some English Protestant
Missionaries, banished from Austria. A
good deal of feeling was evinced by the dif
ferent speakers, bul the discussion led to no
practical result.
A numerous deputation wailed upon the
Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, at the Castle, on
Monday, to ask for his intercession on be
half of Smith O'Brien and his colleagues
He refused to recommend the prayer of the
memorial to the Queen for the liberation of
the pntiiois, on tho ground that they had not
expressed rontrition for their crimes,, or
loyalty, or gratitude towards their Sov
ereign. FRANCE.
There is little of interest from Paris, or,
in fact, from any part of the Continent.
Gens Lamoricere, Bedeau, and Leflo
have Gen. Changaruiei's example, and pub
lishad letters strongly denouncing Louis Na
poleon, and assigning their reasons for refus
ing to take the outh of allegiance to the
Presidunt. Tho letters are equally distin
guished, as is Gen. C.'s, for their boldness
and spiiit.
The delay of two months, granted by the
decree of the 14th of March, to the foreign
holders of five per cent Rentes, to decide
between reimbursement and conversion, ex
pired on-Friday. The demand for reim
bursements amounts to 1,773,180 francs for
Rentes, or 35,473,600 francs of capital.
Payments of cluims commenced on Mon
day.
The Census of Franec has been published
The population is set down at 35,781,628;
from which it appears that the increase
since 1846 has been much less than in for
mer proportionate periods The diminution
is accounted for by the emigration to South
America and California, and by fewer mar
riages having been contracted in the late
troublous times.
On Saturday the Archb'shop of Paris bles
ed four busts of Louis Napoleon, to be pla
ced at the four corners of the new central
tiiaiket place. The ceremony was witnes.
ed by a la i go number of Napoleon's more
immediate admirers.
AUSTRIA.
The Emperor of Austria entertained the
Czar of Russia with great pomp. The latter
was at Dresden, on Agra, the 12ih instant,
en his way from Vienna to Berlin.
A great camp of evolution is to be formed
on the 5i h of June at Czeglod and Keresstur,
in Hungary. All tho disposable cavalry, and
thirty batteries of artillery, are to manoeuvre
inri:ig forty days.
Georgy has published his book, on the
Hungarian war, but the Austrian Govein
inent have suppressed it so thoroughly that
nut a copy is to b had. The cause of this
interdict is supposed to be that he says the
Hungarians were on legitmate ground up to
Iheir declaration of Independence at Debre
czen, on the 14th April, 1849.
PRUSSIA.
Another conference of the Zollverein was
held on the 15th inst., without result.
An extensive conflagration has destroyed
the water works which supplied the city of
Dantzer. Local tradition ascribed the con
struction of these works to Copernicus.
EGYPT.
A letter, dated Constantinople, May 1,
says ; "Alarming reports are alloat concern
ins the island of Crete. Great agitation pre
vails there Several ships of war have been
ordered thither.
1ry Read the advertisement of Ayer's
Cherry Pectoral. There are statements of
nn ordinary interest to all so unfortunate as
U be afflicted, with the dillicullies it cures.
HnoFLANii's Germam Bitters. These
..l..hrMid Bitters prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, 120 Arch street, Philadelphia, are
performing astonishing cures throughout the
!. onnntrv. We can bear witness to
it...;r ,.iiraiive nnwers in the case of a friend
if ours who had the Liver Complain, and
ha.l ined almost every other medicine,
but without effect. After taking a few bot
ties of these Bitters he was entirely cured.
To those who are similarly amicieu were
mm(,,i,l ihem to lake the preparation
knowing thut they will cure the disease
spoken of, and many others to hich "flesh
;i m There is a spurious articli
made in Philadelphia. The only place to
