r i t., 4 tit.g t ()axe 8 LW I I TUESDAY, OCTOBEW:to, DNS RAILROAD'S TO TIIU. PACIFIC. 1 . 'A. fortnight ago to-day a party of exam . sionista passed through this city westward to attend the opening of the "Union Paci fic Railroad" `td 'the one hundreth degree of west. iiongitude. i.Last night - another party•of excursionista, joined . by gentlemen here, went to celebrate the opening of the "Union Pacific ' , Railway, Eastern Divi sion," to Fort Riley, in Kati, sns. The' similarity in the titles and aims of these two toads; has led to come confusion in the popular apprehension respecting them, Which we , propose doing somewhat Thi•"Union Pacific Railroad Conway" is organized exclusiVely under acts of Con - greys. Its vocation. is to build .a railroad from the western houndary of lowa, at - ()Maim, towards the - Pacific 6ccan, until it shalleet the line of the "Central Pacific Rialto dof California." Ti i is land coin . pony as originally empOwered to build a i , . railro d eastward to the - boundary of Cali ' fornin Now, it is authorized to go on in to Ne , il . ada or Utah, nail it shall meet, the "Uni n Pacific." To each of these.com. panic Congress has granted a subvention of sixteen thousand dollars a mile for every mile 114 - road actuallyoompleted arid put in. operation. In addition, the Government grants them "every alternate seetiotQf public land, designated by odd numbers, to the amount of ten alterliate sections per. mile, on each side of said railroad, on the line thereof, and within the limits of twen ty miles on each side of said load, not send, reserved,-or otherwise set aside by the United States, or to which a pre-muptiOn • Orhoniestead claim may. not have attached at the time the line of the road is definitely ' filed." These two companies are virtually. engaged in One great enterprise, which is' .to build a continuous line of railroad be ,. tween the Missouri. river and tide-water on the .Pacific..side.\ Whichever of them shall construct the most miles of this line -mill get the most- Government lauds and • and the most sections Of land. ~Therein a present:difficillty with this line. The - toads connecting' Omaha with the-railroad system east of the Mississippi . . are not yet complete. There are five of these. •1. The Cedar Rapids and Misiduri Itiverc..3. The - MississipPi. and Missouri . • "Railroad, which is the lowa arm of the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad; 3. The --Burlington aud-Missonri River Railroad, Ithe lowa arm of the Chicago, Bullington -'and ,QUiney • Railroad; 4. . The ;Council Bluffs and St. Joiephs Railinad, connect lag with the Hannibal and St. Josephs and Northern Missouri from St. Louis;- ... and, _b. The Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad, which •113 pointing that way. Two of these connections will certainly be ' made in 'the course of neat summer. In addition thnAteetican Central Railway, to run on an sir-lino from Fort Wayne to Onsaba, has-been projected, and a company Aimed inFrench hands. The continued inactivity, however, in respect to it, leaves , nut much - room for hope. The "Dnion Pacific Railway, Eastern DiVision," le a State organization. It was originally empowered to construct a rail : road from the western terminus - of the Mis seeri Pacific Railroad, at the eastern bona -dary of Kansas, to an intersection of the ~ Union Pacific Railroad ;on the our bun: ' * dtedth meridian. In aid of thia'work Con- - ' greets grants precisely the same :value of ~ bonds per mile noir the same amount og lands as to the conapanics•previow4ly nanu,.: .. ' ed. By an act of Congress, pealed at the lasCsessiorr, the Company.constrncting this ' road was authorized to connect! with the "Union Pacific" at any point between the hundredth degree of longiteilo, and i the longitude of Denver, in Colorado, 4tich is a trifle west of the one hundredth and fifth meridian. The proviso attached to this permision la that "the said comport, shall be-entitled toonly the same amount of the tands•of the United States to aid in the construction of this line of railroad and .• telegraph as they would have been entitled . to.if they had connected their line with the Union Pacific Railroad on the One hen dreth degree of longitude." This raises a conjecture in the Minds : of all who are - - - familiar with the map of North Atnerica, . whether ihey mean to connect at all. The one hundledth meridian , is - the matei ial 1 point for intersection, if such a resldt wes . designed, _but if. the- grant of Congresii, particularly; inlands, is so liberal, and the • prospect: of a population following the • 4.- lines'of these roads so good; as to warrant the speedy aampletion of two independent roads, the public have. no - -reason .to cons' _ plaIM Half Ole . bad . cohtaitted in a belt forty miles wide, and long enough to span two-thirds - of the continent, is an. induce.- ment . of no light magnitude. - - -• Before going gather itris . necessary to ehowlow.this .. .Eastern Division is con nected with St. LAtiii. The ‘`Pacifie'Rail ' .. road of Mitisouil," built by a State organi zation, extends from St. Louis to the " east line. of Kansas, at or near Kansas City, . and there ` unites with . the "Union Patine Railway, Eastern Di vision," snaking now - a continuous line from St. Louis to FOrt Riley.. This "Pa cific Railroad of Missouri" is of peculiar gunge, unlike any other ,fri the western country, being five feet .aucl six inches. ' Hence, untii it shall' be contracted, as It doubtless will be, changes of freight and ipassengers arc unavoidable !both at s t. ' Louis and Kansas City.. On the - other hand, the gunge of the "Union Paciffe - ," -1 8 . • faux feet eight inchesand a half, - whieh cot- - • reaponds - with .tho width of the Penn sylvania - Central 'dad the connecting roads between Pittsburgh and Omaha, and , compromise - cars-run through. . Why thee - aid "Division" is called "East -- ' ern' is somewhat a puzzle in nomenclature, as it might, more, properly Ima:tiled "South . Now, let cis Eco how far these lines have . been respectivelY . poshed Westwattl. St. , Louis is nearly on the ninetieth moridianr Fort 'Riley, to which flu opening of the "Eastern Division" is now made, is situ ated at about ninety -Fix degrees and forty - minutes west longitude. Omaha is about on the ninety-sixth Meridian, and the . "Union Pacific" is now in operation to the ono htmdredth degree ot west longitude. The present terminus of the "Union Pa : ' Tittle" is, therefore, three degrees and twen 7 ty minutes farther. ;west than the present terminus of tho "Eastern Division." Unquestionably the advantages in respect to connection with roads leading to tho Atlantic coast are now with the "East ern Division," and will remain with it until the more northerly roads dual he com pleted to Omaha. But thren.nionths will suffice to'finish some thaw _connecting 'links. "What the advantages of the,. re spectlve rotiteahre westward of tiro exist ing termini cannot be determined as long as so essential an element ' . in the calcula , Lion is wanting as the westernterniluis of the ""Eastern Division." If it shall be .::male on.: the, hundredth. meridian, at the point 'of ::intersection; with' the "Union Pacifle," - then the , computation OMpariliiTelY easy.. Ti At! It it shall be on the • western slope of the Rocky Mountains;-at ! a-point of junction with the "Central Paci- I tic Railroad of California," then the pro- I , bleat is manifestly perplexed; for it may well -be :doubted if .either company has definitely'determined where it will cress the MountainMor if final estimates or even ' aurnyahnve been Commenced. • Eacllllof these lines, if they shall - cr°ss , the MMintains separately, will_ become ~ Main iTtinlis, to which numerous lateral -1 branehes will MY ultimately attachql, and each - COB have /Special a dvantages 'in this regard. •' - The , "Eastern Division" will surely re c eive lines from Texas and New Moiico, while the "Union Pacific" ,will take affluents from Dakota, Montana' and Wyomnig. For the through traffic, wheth er in freight or passengers, they will neces. sarily compete. This competition, so far as it is already developed, is best. symbolized by the two words Chicago and ! St. Louis.. Whatever portions of the Atlantle seaboard find readiest access to, and rece l se from, the farther West, through Chleagel will give the preference to the "Union Pacific," While those portions which fintl4St. Louis readiest will prefer the"Easternbivision By these two routes the Eastern and - Mid dle portione of the Atlantic_ coast will be well acemamodated. Fox Bunting, An English magazine discourses as fol lows on the charms of fox hunting : "One of the greatest charms of 'fox hura.4 lug undoubtedly; is, that it disposes of al the dirty weather which4oes to make uri three-fourths of an English winter. Wet anti drizzle, and muggy fog, the character itstics of our brumous and insular according to numerous French authorities, are the capital on which it trades. To the hunting man a rainy morning in winter, which to most other country folk can pro - raise nothing better than a long yawn with book or newspaper in hand,.aud a prospect' over a miserable stretch of sudden country, means sport, and society, and enjoyment. It is nothhig to him that tho ground rides saddle-girth deep, and that he is splashed with mud from head to foot, so long as the scent is good. Ile will only enjoy .the more by contrast of the charms of Lis own fireside, when he has cast his slough, and makes his appearance in the drawhig room before dinner, hungry, and happy, and a little tired. This, indeed, to my mind, constitutes one of the 4irincipal benefits which accrue from fox hunting," consid ered in an ethical light. .It enables certain rich people occaSionally to realize come of 'the conditions of poorer humanity, to feel themselves, if only for a short time, to be men, and not only lords or squires or great merchants and manufacturers. When he gets off his horse after a long wet day in the Clays, my lord is very Much in the same draggle-tailed condition in which his laborer lodge is,. just emerging from the ozzing ditch, in Which he has been eu gag , ed - for some hours plashing a renee..; The hardness which it necessitates,' ,together with a small amount ordanger that ac compahies it; takes fox hunting out of the category of tame sports, such 'as battue shooting, for example; than which I know not nay amusement more despicable and inane. And one of the least favorable signs of file times, to my mind, is•the in creasing fondness:or the noble and wealthy for this latter sport; if sport we must call it. For the spint of civilization and re finement which has exercised from the higher ranks of 'the',community, drunken.' ness and swearing, and that roughness which still had something of hardihood in it, is not as unmixed gain in society, if the English mind ist.o be emasculated thereby, and loSing its coarseness, is to lose also its manliness and self-reliance.—Mannilliat.' Jfagazise, for Ockber. Consplrao :Against the We. of "Napoleon. - The. Berlin correspondent of the London Times, under date of October Bth says: "We all remember those dayX ufaosmetY in the beginning of July, when the Empe ror Napoleon, having been appealed to by dtlefeated Kroger, hesitated as to the course he Should pursue.
