or twelve years past. It was thought by a
number Of persons that If we had a law simi
lar In its general features to that In operation
in Philadelphia, this conflict in our local poli
tico might be avoided. No public mooting PM
held on the subject, so tar as I am aware, ex
cept the Meeting of the, Prison inspectors,
and the one held in December last referred to

was a single section extending the provision s
of the act In operation lit Philadelphia to Al
legheny county. This bill was prepared
in accordance with. the understanding
arrived at by the meeting alluded to.
W hen I remitted the law to the
county, Treasurer he. made objection to
the cenapheation of the Philadelphia law, met
insisted that a new hate should he prepared
that its workings could be more easily under
stood. Senate bill No. 1 9 911 was accordinklY
prepared and was drawn tip to meet the views
of the Allegheney delegation. Special pales
were taken to have the bill published In the
Pittsburgh papers. The hostility toil did not
develop itself until after its passage by the
Senate. I never had any interview or corre
spondence with the Liquor Leagbo, or my
member of it, on the subject of this bill until
a Committee came to Harrisburg while the
bill wall pending in the House. I know noth
ing, except by report, of the use of money in
this connection. Do not know that the CO. -
mitten held out any pecuniary inducement to
any member of tne Legislature to secure the
passage of the bill. Have no knowledge or
money being raised by the Liquor Assoc,.
