It appears from a list lately published, that
the mercantile steam marine of thellnitedStatee,
comprises seventy two sea pink vessels. Thirty
six of them are of one thousand tons burthen and
over. Three of them are of three thousand tons,
and the , largest mercantileveisels in , the World ;
nod a large proportion of theremalnder are over
two thousand tons. Ido not know of any . inure
brilliant illustration of the progress of our coun
try among the nations of the world, than these
facts present. "The-whole of this magnificent
fleet has been 'put afloat within
. five years. If
my recollection is not at fault; the steamers
Southerner and the Crescent City, were launched
and commenced. running in 1846 . .- The first of
the Atherican transatlantic steamers, the Wash
ington, was cimpleted in Jura, 'MI 7, more than
ten years after Great Britain had etumeeded in
eatablishing lines of ocean steamers . on very ex
tended routes. -It is certainly a thing to 'excite
in. us just pride and satisfaction, that in less
than - three penis after thi4egitu3ing, our . coon-

themselves the fasteat, ever built. From the la,

One object of this correspondence, very efi-

the Presidency, in 1852 0r.1856. Re will stand,

of J. Walker, however, think him enti

On Tuesday night last, a regular old fashictned'i
piece of rektorl humboggery and eltip trap was
exhibited at Tanimany Hall. It was apparently
intended to "astonish the natives," but signally
failed Ia that worthy object, because very. few rf
that class gave themselves the trouble to attend,
the nudience being chiefly composed of such am
ateur democrats as, having taken a few' lessons'
in other countries, have come over here to finish
'their education. It was a .meeting ostensively

Walker': lion. Andrew Johnson, of Tenn., a dere

' The outward stream of gold still continues.
The - steamer to-day took more than '.a million.
We have eleven regular Meant packets plying
between this port and Europe, which make at
least six outward and inward trips a month, not
one of them has sailed from New York for three
months past without taking an immense ship
ment of-gold and silver. It is ascertained that
the exports of specie and bullion, from January
Int to:June let of the present year, have exieed
ed the total known imports' by two millions. :Ace
cannot ascertain with certainty what the amount
of the imports is; for it is supposed that EL half
or a third of the gold from California cornea in
the - hand* of passengers, who, of 'course, do not
publish it to the world, and it is only 'relishable
to conclude that each one or the thirty or forty.
thousand immigrants from the olpsorld brings
some email addition to the metallit4enlth of the
country. Still the money is going out at a moat
prodigious rate; there can be no question abott
that. The reason of it is clear: the money is ..

NEW Yong, Tune.:
The great talk of today has been the expote'
of. the quarrel between J. Watson Webb, of,the
Courier, =AN. P. Willis, contained in. the pro
ceedings before Judge Sandford. Webb, it will
be recollected, charged Willis with the Seduction
of the daughter of a dear friend, who died bed
ken hearted, and declared that ho had the evi
dence of his charge, so far as the lady was con !
cemed, in hie possession. Thus the matter has
stood, and the lady's; name circulated only by
telegraphic cementation, when suddenly s Mr.
Coddingten, the keeper of a livery stable in
Rahway, N. J.,
commences proceedings to re-
Corer from Col. Webb certain letters written by
hie wife, (a daughter of the late Henry lumsn,)
to N. P. Willis, and now in cot. Webb's posses
sion. The result of all thiewill be an exposure
to public 'view of the
,indiserenions of a lady,
which her friends trusted had passed into ob
linen. • •
To-night is the question of breeches or petti
coat; to -ho discussed at Hope' Chapel, by Mrs. E.
Oakes Smith, the Wife of Sobs Smith, the origi
nal leak Downing. This good lady is just now
carrying on a crusade against what the calls the
abuses of social life, as shown in the treatment
of women, but with little success thus far, oft
having obtained oven her own consent to den the
Bloomer trousers:. The poor lady, who has con
siderable talent as a writer, has fob some time
been in sad trouble to find her sphere. - When a
young girl, her now'husband discovered - • in 'her
the signs of genius, married her, and devoted
himself to educating her; calling to his assist
ance the help of the best teachers. Being at the
time editor of a paper, be encouraged her taste
for letters, and after' a world of pains, was re
warded by riming her ittain considerable • emi
nence as a lady writer. In the course. of years
the young wife found herself a middle-aged
woman, with a goodly flock or childrea and a
husband 'stricken la years,' at the sathe time
discovering a great incompatiblityin thelY thspo

Oar city fathers have beoome sensible! of the
wants of New York,'so far aspublie grounds are
concerned, and have taken steps to procure a
tract of one hundred and sixty acres of beauti
fully wooded kind, lying upon the East diver,
between Sixty-fourth and Seventy-fifth - streets,
for a park. It will 'cost a million of dollars, but
that is the mereatithle, considering the need New
York has of such a soot of grotaid where her
citizens can breathe the fresh air. ! It has also
been deterinined upon to enlarge the Battery, so
as to include Castle Garden, Making this now
charming promenade still more attractive to
New Yorkers and our visitors. The eostwill be
only $27.000.
•
Visitors to New York most not forget the rooms
of the 'Art Union,' which arc already very at
tractive, not-only from the number. of pictures
bought for distribution, but from th e presence of
many rare, works on view. The number or sub
scribers is now over three thousand, a number
far eurpassing any former year, at this date.
In the business world, there is little of impor
tance; things having aisumcd the usual quiet OI"
