The heat of the past few days have kept amuse

a sparkling little actress, standing some

her veins. She dances viveolously and well,
has a pretty Uccle foot, and a good stage pro
neness altogether. Although very unlike Agnes
Boucleault, sic Robertron, she possesses an ease

quote, as that of one who has held a very prominent
place in the theatrical world of our English coming:

in the field, and their opening play was of the most

A SINGULAR STGRY.—Serireant Ingram of the

clad navy. to be laid up at the Phliadelpnla Navy

On the morning of the 12th of June, when the
champion Athletic Club was starting on its experi
mental tour to Newark, Hoboken, Morrison's, and
Brookhn, to play the leading clubs of those local'.

A CeIDENTS.—On Saturday evening about
raven o'clock, Willie Karcher, a child of ten years
of ape s was run over by the ambulance of the West
ern H= se Company. The child was playing In front

The vehicle ran over the little fellow's breast,
breaking his collar bane and arm and tnjuring him
internally. No hopes are entertained of Us re

Ellen Ivrellenamin, aged thirty-nye yam!, ro
ololtg at 201 Dean street, wane at wodz on Satur•
day afternoon, accidentally fell down stairs, in.
jured one of her legs, and received a pretty severe
contused wound on her head. She was stunned from
the effects of the tall, and It was deemed necessary
to removeher to the Penn Hospital.

ARRIVAL OF TIM MASSACHITSETTS.—The
United States supply steamer Massachusetts, Lieut.
Commander W. H. West, arrived last evening from
the South Atlantic Squadron. She brings one
hundred and Silty discharged officers and soldiers.
She lett Charleston on Thursday night. There was
no news of Importance. The Maseachwietts passed
United States steamship Wissahickon at sea hound
to New York; United States steamship Bermuda,
bound south, and the following vessels in the bay
bound up : United States steamship Fah Kee, tow.
lug monitor Nantucket; schooner Wm. Gregory,
of Nassau ; bark Linda, and United States schooner
C. P. Williams.
F 1.1618. —On Saturday evening, a car filled
with straw, stationed on a sideling on the Norris.
town railroad, at Manaytink, took tire from the lo
comotive of a passing train. The oar escaped se•
rious damage.
Yesterday afternoon some boys who were in the
cellar of the house IS2O Mount Vernon street, play
ing with matches, set lire to a lot of lumber and
other rubbish. The fire was extinguished by the
pollee and Citizens before much damage had been
done.
Last evening a slight fire occurred in a house in
the court back of Eighth street, between Walnut
and Locust streets. eL bed was burned.
BUN FTRECT., —George Hess, a member
of the Neptune Hose Company, and W. Elliott,
belonging to the bland io•liand Engine Voripany,
were enn•struck on Goatee street, ahave Tenth,
while proceeding to the lire in Mount Vernon Street.
They were recovering last night.
BELTGIOITS.—Forty -eight new members
were united to the Calvary Presbyterian Church,
L , 7cust, shove Fifteenth, yesterday. Ten of these
were from other churches. This Is for the quarter
ending the mh inst., and is the best comment on
the abilities and faithfulness of the pastor,
Wileott Calkins.
BOUND FOR EUROPE.—Mr. jos. Megary,

on Tuesday, haying engaged a passage on board the
splendid sailing ship Fisiladelphla, now lyin at

THE MILLERS AND Ting WOR l lll3.—The
trees in front of the State•house, last evening, were
filled with millers. A stream of water for half an
hour, during the present week, would prevent the
appearance of a single worm on these trees next
season.
DSDICATION.—The new Methodist Epis
copal church. at Nineteenth and Poplar streets, was
dedicated yesterday, with appropriate religious
EXeICIOCES. The edifice is constructed of Trenton
non Stone, and in dlmwastAns Is 67 by 77 feet.
WAN ON TIM CANINEB.—During the peat
week, 19.6 dogs were captured and diaporod of in the

HEAT.—Tbe mercury, at three o'clock

Anthony Hale, at one time. and down to the fall
m 1164, the chief carter at the navy yard, was called
up Satnrdey for sentence. Bale, it will be remem
bsred, was convicted during the term of the court
jest closed, of having embezzled_ carried away, and
fold pitch and room, too property or the United
States at the navy yard, the value Of Whin amount
ed to many thoueands of dollars. Of the numerous
employees at the navy yard at the time, who are
•
ctargod as having been particeps mesons in the
shameless plundering of the Government that was
to lozg canted on there, Hale has thus far been the
only one tried and corvicted. There are pending
indictments swatter, two or three others of the party,
welch will doubtless be tried at the neat session of
the court; but in a statement made by Hale to the
court, he says forty-five persons wore connected with
stealings. He was Sentenced to pay a fine of
$2 000 and to throe years in the Eastern Peniten
tiary.

A ease of habeall Corpus was called up touching
the custody of a child, The little girl was in. Court
eery neatly attired. It seems her parents are
dead, and ner aunt gave her to a gentleman named
Sedgwiek, who was to keep her on trial to see if she
would emit his family. Before the expiration of the
time stipulated, the aunt claims the child. The
Cabe was postponed three weeks, to enable a witness
who is Melt, to be present.
Wm. Cope claimed the Custody of his child from
its uncle, John ;3ohaffer. The father testified that
the child was taken from echeol by the uncle. Oa
ereswexamination, It was shown that the child hue
a step-mother, but the father ( levied ever having
seen her inflict Cruel punishment tips'el the Calla.
MrS. Schaffer testified that she wag W. Wife Of VI
uncle of the child ; she had raised a brOtZr and
sister of this child; about five Weeks ago the ea.!'
Came to her house saying her step-mother had
whipped her and sent her to school without her din
ner ; the father of the ehild Came to the house of
witness and there the child told him how brutally
the step-mother had treated her, and she was made
to tell him stories as to how her eyes were black
ened. The witnessproduCed the clothing that was
on the Child, and they were a bundle of patched
rags.
Mrs. Williams testified that she resided next door
to Mr. Cope. and had seen the stepmother drag the
child by the hair through the yard. and throw her in
a shed ; she had seen the child's face look aS though
it had been tern by a cat ; she had heard the Min
noise at different times as though She was being
thrown against the wall ; the step. mother was a We
iner, of very violent temper, and used shameful lan
guage to the children; the step-mother also abused
another child, a boy, so badly that he ran away, and
is now in the House of Refuge • the treatment to
the child now in court had been going on for four
years and a halt ; one of Mrs. Cope's own children
died. and she beat this little girl Decallse sloe did not
tell her exactly how the child coughed before it
died ; Mrs. Cope Is very dear, and could hot hear
the ehild cough.
Mr. Cooper testified to having seen the Step
mother beat the child with a broom-stick, and strike
her on the newt with a knife.
Mrs. Cox testified that she formerly lived with
Mrs. Cope, and had seen her beat the child with a
yoker and dusting-brush. The child had its hand
burned and said her step-mother put it in the stove.
A number of the neighbors testified to h av i ng
heard the child scream, and to crowds being at
tracted about the house.
Mrs. Cope, the step-mother, was called and testi
fied that tee MUM went to school ever/ day ; the

JObn Stewart and Clement L. Wilson, the 1.8,9 t
Mimed a printer, were arrested on Saturday. On the
engage Of printing and issuing five forged bounty
Warrants for the sum of $4OO such, bearing date
February 28, 1885. Mr. Wilson is a printer. Inite.
()lately upon the fact of the presentation of the
forged warrants being made known, he proceelsd
to the Mayor's dike and gave information that led
to the arrest of Stewart. He says that Stewart
called on him on last Monday and ordered two
hundred and fifty Warrants to be printed, ter which
the sum of NI) was to be paid. Upon delivering the
war rants to Stewart he paid $lO on aocount, and
promised to pay the balance In a day or two. At
the hearing on Saturday afternoon, Wilson identi
fied the warrants that had been detected by Mr.
City Treasurer Brimm. Stewart was bound over in
the sum of $3,000, and Wilson in the sum of $1,500.

Stevens. were arraigned at the Central Station,
on Saturday afternoon, on the charge of being pro•
feskional burglars. The parties were arrested on
Saturday morning by Detectives Taggart anti Lt.
mon, at house No. 703 Chestnut street. Hand and
Wheeler were found in had, a - ad Steven under it.
A brace and bit, and a burglar's jimmy were found

Charles Carroll was arraigned on Saturday morn•
log on the charge of larceny. It seems from the
evidence adduced that the prisoner and other parties
entered the house of the Lincoln Bose Company,
and taking out the carriage, hastened away with it.
Some of the members of the company pursued the
parties, and a severe stone fight ensued, during
which torero] on both sides mere more or less In
