A Unitarian Cokvbntion in Nnw Yoke.—A
Convention of this denomination Is now In session
at the Broadway Athencenm, lately the Church of
the Messiah. More than four hundred delegates
are present from different parts of thecountry, and
among them are many distinguished men. Hew
England, the prinolpalseat of the denomination,
sends the largest number, but there are delegations
from this State, all the Middle States, and even the
far West- Governor Andrew, of Massachusetts, Is
the presiding officer, assisted by several prominent
divines.
One of the most Interesting questions which has
been raised Is that of agreeing upon some state
ment of bollef In which all who bear the Unitarian
name may unite. This question was propounded In
a series of resolutions of which the following Is a
condensation:
Whereas, The great opportunities and demands
for Christian labor and consecration at this time ta
crease our sense or the obligation of all disciples of
the Lord Jesus Christ to prove their faith by self
denial and by the devotion of their lives and posses
sions to the service of God and the budding up of
the kingdom of His Son;.
Therefore, The Christian churches of the Unita
rian faith here assembled unite themselves In a 00m

The resolutions caused an animated dlsonsslonon
‘Thursday last, to[wbiohsome of toe extremists gave
vent to some extraordinary views. We exepert
from are port of the i etslon of Thursday:
Bev. Mr. Watson, of Connecticut, did not like
the first article, but he meant to give it no factious
■opposition. For one he could not call Jesus Christ
” Lord.” He could not accept the word Lord in
that connection. A voice (<cfto voce)—” It is toedan
guage of the Hew Testament.” Mr. Watson said—
It was rather the language of Paul, who so spake of
Jesus Christ, buttle could not accept it in the
manner which other Christians accepted It. They
had put aside the temporal In Ameilaa long since;
let them also do so in religion. Let there be no
temporalities In religion among them. Jesus Christ
came to benefit the race; but place him over the
head of any man, and he would object to it; Christ
did not come to pe a Lord over them. He came to
emancipate mankind, and ho (the speaker) did not
want any one to bo a Lord between himself and
God. If the word “Lord” meant that which It
meant in the titles given to men, he had no objec
tion to it, bat they should then, In that case, explain
the word as to show its explicit meaning.
Rev. Mr. Burley, of Florence, Mass., said he
should like to see a house of refuge for the whole
liberal faith or the country, even though it should
not be called Unitarian. He should favor a Bystem
by which they could all unite together, and act as
Jesus Christ had acted to benefit the world. Some
had* called Christ “Lord,” hut he believed they were
wrong. Be should be in favor of calling. him Master
Jettis Christ, or Mr. Jesus Christ, in order to explain
his character. Pevlhad said of Jesus Christ—
Here, according to the report, he was interrupted
very[d«oldedly by other members of the Convention"
and some went so far as to question his right to a
seat In the body. This matter was explained, but
only partially, since Ms defenders, who were hat
two In number, among all the large delegation, said
that he was pastor of a Unitarian church in Flo
rence, but had not been Invited, probably, we should
think, on account of his extreme and bizarre ideas.
After the speeches we have quoted the debate took
its regular and legitimate course. Besides this, one
of the purposes of the Convention Is to call atten
tion to the colleges and theological schools under
the charge of the Unitarian denomination, and to
stimulate private munifioenee to endow them libe
rally. Another Is that of supporting their religious
newspapers, b; providing fanes- sufficient to es
tablish them on a permanent foundation, and to
combine, In conducting them, such a variety of lite
rary talent and correspondence at home and abroad
as shall make them Interesting and attractive to
readers of all classes.
THANKSGIVING F<fß VIOTOBT.—Rev. D, L.
Gear, pastor of the Ftrßt Congregational Church, in
this olty, will, on to-morrow evening, deliver an ad
dress on the above subject, at the Stone Chapel,
located at the junction of Frankfordroad and Mont
gomery avenue, In the Eighteenth ward. The

Woodruff and David Kay, will perform some of
their choicest musical selections at the morning
and evening services. In the afternoon the children
of the Sabbath Sohool conneotod with the church
will also celebrate our victories in a becoming man
ner.
Ahothbb Thankbgiviks Mbbtihg.—The
Churoh of Qte Epiphany will he open for a great
thanksgiving meeting for our victories to-morrow
(Sabbath) evening. Lot it and all other similar
meetings be filled with hearts and voices crying
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
good will to men!” It is most flttlng-that gratitude
to God, and help for the brave men who have pur
chased oar victories with their blood, should be
freely poured fourth In this blessed hour of viotory.
Cosditioh of thb Chtjboheb ih Chablbs
ton.—Since the surrender or Charleston we have

and the Rev. Dr. Moore.' The latter having on his
shoulders almost the entire spiritual labors of the
Catholic community of Charleston, is tasked be

A Hishlanb Mibaclb —A Scotch paper, the
Elgin Courant s says most people who know Strath
spey Intimately ere aware of a tradition being
current among the “ Mon of Duthll” from time
Immemorial that there once was an unparalleled
Interposition of Providence in oauslng the waters
of the Spey to separate, affording a passage on
dry ground to those who oarrled the mortal remains
of “a certain woman’’ to their last resting-place i
and, to commemorate this wonderful event, the
“men,” by the request of one of their number, now
deceased, are abopt to ereat a stone near the place
where a passage was effected, bearing thcfbllowlng
■wonderful inscription, which (says our correspon
dent) I had the pleasure of reading to-day on the
stone in English and Gaelic. Tbe.foiiowlng Is the
English version: “Erected at the request of the
late William Grant, Slock, for a memorial of a
signal manifestation of the Divine powerin dividing
this water, and causing a passage while the remains
or a certain woman were carried over on dry
ground.”
A PEUHBYLVAWIA Sohjibb’s Idea.—A soldier
■of a Pennsylvania regiment, who was wounded at
the battle of Ohanoellorsville, and left on the field,
afterwards related his adventures to his colonel.
When the tide of battle had swept past the
spot where be lay, a rebel soldier oame to him and
took bis eanteen, his haversack, his musket, and ac
coutrements, andl finally demanded his coat and
shoes. At this the Pennsylvanian at first demur
red. but was forced to submit. Thereupon ensued
a conversation : “ Where do you belong 1” asked
tie rebel. “To Pennsylvania,” was the reply.
“ And what are you doing down hero In Virginia i”
“ Yel, I comes down here to fight,” said the unlucky
Bucks county man. “To fight, ehl” said the Vir
ginian ; “why don’t von fight In your own State, If
von want to fight; what business have you here In
Virginia ?” The question might have been a poser
for some, but the brave Dutchman replied, “Yel, I
fights mlf Uncle Sam, and Unde Sam'he goes etry

AN INCIDENT IN HOSPITAL LIFE.
: An agreeable scene took place in the hospital of
the 2d Division of the 2d Army Corps, at City Point,
Virginia, on the night of April the first, .whloh, pos
sessing some local interest, a report Is transferred
to this column. On the evening stated, a train ar
rived with wounded heroes fresh from-the battle
field. They were received with most tender care;
convejed to the tents, where their wants were
speedily relieved by the self-sacrificing volunteer
nurses, articles of food and apparel and whatever
else was needed to make them comfortable. The
chief of these nurses is a granddaughter of Robert
Morris, of the Revolution, and wife of Mr. J, L.
Husbands, of Philadelphia. She entered on this
patriotic duty, voluntarily, early to the rebel
lion. She has been assisted for a long time
by that great American heroine whom the
soldier’s delight to call by the popular name of
Michigan Annie. After the wounded, who arrived
on the night of April Ist, had been carefully »t
-tendedto, amessenger oalled at the tent of Mrs. Hus
hands, requesting her presence and that of her hus
band at Waidmaster Sklllman’s stockade. A sol
dier, who writes upon the subject, says ; “It was
my good fortune to be present when Mr. and Mrs.
Husbands arrived, aoeompanied by Michigan
Annie, and were usbered Into the presence of many
soldiers, whose joyful faces betokened the Interest
they felt to the proceedings. The chaplain, to a
neat and appropriate address, them presented, on
behalf of the soldiers, as a token and
esteem they entertained for Mrs. Husbands, a mis
sive gold ohato and pencil. Mrs. H. made a brief
and modest reply to words and tone of voloe that
bespoke the kindness of her heart. Mr. H. also
thanked the soldiers for this mark of esteem mani
fested for his wire, and assured them that , every
thing looked well for the country ; that the foul re
bellion was fast waning away, and that It was quite
likely that betore many days Richmond would fall,
and the stars and stripes float over Its Capitol.

BILLIARDS,
Next Tuesday and W ednesday, In the Cooper In
stitute, New York, a M. Garme, from France, will
give exhibitions in billiard playing. His peculiar
shots are said to be numerous ana wonderful. To
carom round a hat or a dish, to draw the ene-ballthe
entire length of the table, to draw the ball withofftlta
coming In contact wilh another ball or with the
cushions, are among the commonplaces of this pro
fessor, which he executes with the greatest ease and
certainty. But to carom npon one ball on the table
and another In the corner of the room on the floor
is more surprising. Yet these feats are accom
plished, it is said, with the greatest ease and cer
tainty. The professor will make a visit to this city
In a short time, when we will have an opportunity
to judge for ourselves of Me skill.

IMPORTANT CASE ARISING UNDER THR INCOME
Edmund Fennell -ta; William Baker, ooUeotor of
Internal revenue for the Seventh dlstrlot of Penn
sylvania.
This was an action to recover hack a certain tax
paid under It seems that to the year 1836
the plaintiff purchased a tract of land of about
eighty acreß to the vicinity of Chester, Delaware
county, for the sum of $8 600, In 1893 he sold the
tame land for $40,000. The difference between toe
amount paid and toe amount received, after de
ducting the cost of permanent Improvements, was
assessed against him as 1 -gains, profits, orlnoome for
the year 1868. The annual and special income tax
for that year upon these galas, profits, or Income
amounted t 051,900. This sum was paid by. plain
tiff to toe collector under protest, with notice that
he would immediately bring an action to recover
the same baok. The oasewas tried yesterday, and
under the tastiuctlona of the court, as to the law
upon toe feots as above stated, the jury rendered a
verdict ror toe plaintiff for *1,922.72,' it being toe
amount claimed with Interest. John C. Knox, Esq.,
for plaintiff; District Attorney Gilpin for toe de
fendant.
The result of this case seems to settle the question
that wLere real or personal property was told
during too year 1863 toe proceeds of the sale are
not taxable as Income unless toe property was also
purchased within the same year.
The oourt, without trying another case, adjourned
till this morning.

ALLEGED ASSAULT AND BATTEBF.
Anton Fans, who beeps a piano store at Fifth %ttd
Vine streets, was arraigned yesterday on the sharge
of committing an assault and battery. Officer
Trelts arrested Mr. Faas, and a hearing was en
tered into, A little girl, named Elisa Grouse,
testified that she heard nice music In the store,
and looked In through a broken pane of glass
In tbe window, when Faas threw something at her,
and struck her in the face. Another little g*ri, who
waß with Eliza, testified positively to seeing! the ac
cused throw a tuning key at her, and strlkether In
the face. jg -

which struck the child. • He denied throwing any
thing at the child. The Recorder held him In *l,OOO
to answer the charge at oourt. Mrs Grouse ap
peared at the hearing, and was In much distress at
the oonditlon of the child. Her husband Is a soldier
In tbe-army, rad the little one Is very useful to her

say that the defendant Is a kind-hearted man, and
not at all likely to resort to suoh violence as charged
against him,

seabf practice at the expense of a
RESPECTABLE CITIZEN.
Leonard I'lsier, tbe proprietor or a hotel on Mar.
ket street, a well-known respectable citizen, was
arraigned at the Central Station, yesterday after
noon, os tie charge of enlisting a colored man at
Wilmington, Delaware, as a substitute for a friend
residing there. The charge was preferred by a
colored woman living In Prise’s court, Lombard
Btreet, above Third. It seems from the evidense
adduced that, some time since, a man representing
himself as Xieonard Fisher called upon the husband
of complainant and lndnoed him to enlist for a gen
tleman residing at Wilmington. The applicant set
forth that he kept a hotel on Market street, and
that the person who desired a substitute boarded
with him while in Philadelphia. The Bum of money
to be paid was seoo besides the bounty. An agree
ment was made that the substitute Bhould oall at
the hotel on the following morning, and Mr. Stsher
would accompany him to Wilmington to see that he
was fairly dealt with. At the time appointed the
substitute called at tho hotel. Mr. Fisher was there.
Arrangements were at onoe made, and the,two men
started in the next train for the place of destination.
The subatllute.was mustered in as soon astbjffrtend
was found. The $6OO and the bounty mdfiey were
paid to the substitute, and he transferred the $6OO to
Mr. Fisher, to be given to tbe wife of the substitute.
Mr. F., of course, kindly consented to this and re
ceived the money. The substitute was sent to camp;
Fisher took passage in tbe next train and returned
to Philadelphia. The wifewaited in vain for-the
money. She endeavored to find Mr. Fisher, but did
sot succeed. Not being able to write she went to
the camp at Wilmington, where she had an inter
view with her husband, He related all that had
transpired, and tojui R-art/) sue for the money.
'Accordingly, on Thursday aftoffloon'ner
plaint was made at the Central Station against'
Leonard Fisher, the proprietor ,of a hotel on Mar
ket street. A warrant was issued and served yes
terday npon him, In response to which he appeared
for a hearing. To the surprise of the complainant
he was not the light man. The truth now flashed
forth that gome sharp thief had personated Mr.
Fisher and the nameof the hotel, and, to give ap
parent authenticity to the affair, even went so far
as to Invite the substitute to that place, as above
mentioned. Mr. Leonard Flsber was as much sur
prised at the developments as the complainant was
melanoholy. The investigation having terminated,
the parties left the office. We may state that In
all the substitute swindling business, this- Is the
first case of this peculiar character that has been
made known through pollae examination.
AN UNFORTUNATE MAN.
Captain William Oliver, a resident of down Jer
sey, was once the oaptaln of a boat that run to
Fortress Monroe'. He was dratted to serve in the
army; but to avoid becoming subject to storms of
Iron and leaden hall sold out his Interest In tbe
boat, and with the proceeds thereof, pulled up
stakes and started for Cincinnati, to engage In
other pursuits. He arrived In the Queen City;
found other pursuits nowhere; he came back, his
“ idle” having been reduced to the sum of seventy
five dollars. He arrived at the depot, in West Phi
ladelphia, yesterday afternoon; entered a horse
car ; pulled out his pocket-book; took therefrom a
one. dollar note, to pay his passage-money; returned -
the book to bis pocket. Just at this moment three
young men rußhed Into the car faster than there
seemed to be any necessity for. He remonstrated
against their rudeness; they apologized, and the
next moment got out, saying they would get lu an
other oar. Shortly after this the oonduotorhanded
ninety-three cents change to Captain Oliver, i The
latter felt for his pooket-book, and, to his utter dis
comfiture, ascertained that It had been stolen. The
job was accomplished by the “swell-mob,” who
rushed Into the oar as stated. ~ . ' .
