PHILADELPHIA.
First meeting 'for worship was held on 18th Marsh,
1853, in a small frame building on Lexington avenue,
near the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane. The,
sermon was preached by Rev. Prof. Saunders to a con
gregation of three person*, one of wnom was Hon.
This service was continued under the care of Profes

The eaureh building was entirely completed in 1860,
and a unanimous call given to Rev J. Addison Henry -
This was accepted, and the young minister, having
Justfinished his studies in tbe college of New Jersey,

The cost of the chureh was about 111, ODO, of which
more than $3,000 was contributed ny Henry O. BlaAr,

The church has prospered in ail her interests tempo*
ral and spiritual during the pastorate of Rev. Mr.
Henry. In 18%, when he came to the church* the ac
tual working membership was 86; It is now ovar 140.
Hardly a communion has passed .without some addi
tions to the church. The Sunday School numbers neart

The debt incurred in building the church ($B,OOO, in
3860) wa* at onetime burden*ome to a small member
ship, but it has been gradually dim nished, and on the
lest day of February was folly paid, principal and in-

This was increased April, 1884, to $1,20D; ana at a very
full meeting of tbe congregation, held 17th Last., Hon.
J. R. Ludlow in the chair, the bond and mortgage aon-

tools ie the principal specialty of the house, but it also

Mrs. EeUey, who was before the court some time

an order that the father of the child of the parties should
■visit it daily, and take it out when he desired- The
mother had kept the child away for a week at a time,

Charles Calhoun, of Baltimore, claimed the custody
of his child, Wm. B, Calhoun, aged 18 years. Ghas.
W. Brooke, Bsq., who appeared ter the;fluher; .stated
that thiß boy. sought the scctetyof Matilda Bills, and
Mary and Jane Loughlin. The father had followed the.
boy to Ireland, anu taken him from the. custody, of
these people Until recently he was being educated at
a .college near Baltimore, and leaving there went to
the house, of these. people, who aided his escape .when
an officer went for him.: The court,'without going into
a general hearing, ordered the relatore.-to use every
energy to place the father in change of his boy v .
Thomas Mullen asked to be discharged from a charge
of assault and battery on a female. Alderman Garter
testified that he heard.the case, and- the-lady testified
th&t Mullen was /engaged with his carriage to convey
htr and friends to a funeral. On returning therefrom
the defendant stopped his- carriage some distance from
their house and ordered them ont, saying he had
another engagement. The lady being in a delicate con
dition. asked to be taken to ber home, as she was not
able to walk there, whereupon Mullen dragged her
from the carriage and left her in the street. Judge
Ludlow remanded Mullen to takehis trial.

ARRESTED OR SUSPICION.
At an early lour on Saturday morning polios officers
observed two men loiteringabout the neighborhood or
Arch and Eighth streets. They seemed to be contem
plating which Btora or dwelling to ester. Finally they
were taken into custody and condoeted to the Sixth
ward station-house. Upon their persona were found
several pair of burglars nippers, a pawn ticket, and
half of a manuscript letter, rdated Newton falls, March
6th. and addressed to Friend King. This document set
forth that at Bxaceville, Trumbull county, Ohio, there
was no bank, and that an honest man residing there
was the custodian of the people's mosey. United States
bonds, Ac. It was thought a "crack" could be made
here that would yield $100,066. The writer makes a
request that ’King should come to the West, bring his
tools, Ac. The document then set forth the best way to
travel. The prisoners gave the names of Wo. Smith
and Henry Taylor. They were committed to await
further developments.
BOBBERY.
Rally on Saturday morning it was discovered that a
tent-making establishment in the rear of Alderman
Welding’s office had been forcibly entered some time in
the night and robbed of several hundred dollars' worth
of goods.

dred rods from the mouth, as It empties into the Alle-
gheny river- These are very finely located on the Bun,
and Hue selections. A well is in progress, and will be
completed without expense to the Company.
CHERRY RUN.
Ho. 3 is live acres in fee simple upon this celebrated
stream, which has attained a notoriety possessed by no
other section for producing Fetrolsum.no wells haying
been put down upon its borders which have failed to

The Coal is to be delivered on board vessels In the
ports of Philadelphia or New York, in such quantities,
and at such times as may be required: furnishing, if de
manded, seven thousand tons per week. T • .
In case of failure to deliver the coal in sufficient quan
tity, and at the proper time and place the Government
reserves the right to make good any deficiency by pur
chase at the contractor’s risk and expense.
