FESTIVAL FOR THE BENEFIT OF A WORTHY
INSTITUTION
On Thursday (to-morrow) evening, at Sansom
street Ball, there will be a festival held for the ex
press purpote of raising funds to furnish the new
Ilome for Orphan Children of Soldiers and Sailors.
We may state that this young and worthy institu
tion 15 Connected with and will be Conducted under
the same judicious management aS the Northern
Home for Friendless Children, located at Twenty
third and Brown streets. The festival, we Are glad
to find, is eliciting proper sympathy for its object, as
may be judged' from the fact that in two instances
the sum of one hundred dollars has been paid by
gentlemen for single•admission tickets. The coca
sion, moreover. will be a very pleasant one. Ad
dresses Will be made by Rev. Bishop Simpson, ex-
Governor Pollock, and others, and nothing will be
left undone that could add to the attractiveness of
such an entertainment.

THE POLICE.
SHOOTIIIG CASE
Last evening a woman named Mary Barrett was
admitted Into the hospital, having been wounded in
the calf of one of 'her legs, during a disturbance
that occurred between Emma Holland ( 4, the sailor
boy") and her husband, at a public house on Dock
street. It seems from all that we can learn, a fight
occurred between the parties, in which whisky was
the prime cause. It is said that Emma procured
a revolver and tried to shoot her husband. The
ball missed him and took effect as above stated.
The police arrested the two Hollands. They were
looked up for a hearing.
(Before .31r. Aldermen WeWhig.)
LARCENY OF A COAT.
William Taylor was arraigned, yesterday morn
ing, on the chance of the larceny of a coat, the pro
perty of Simon Sterne, the proprietor of a clothing
store on North Scoond street. It seems, from the
evidence, that defendant and another man went to
the store on Monday evening, under the pretenoe
of wishing to purchase a coat. Quite a number
were shown them. One for the sum of $35 had no
attractions for them. A $45 coat came nearer to
their notions, but it Was not good enough. One for
850 approached their views nearer than any yet
shown, still it did not come up to the fine feelings of
a firstolass gentleman. The proprietor, anxious to
sell, produced a 855. This was faultless. It was ex
cellent cloth and well made, yet the customers da
tired something still better, if it were possible to
obtain it. Now, It so happened that the clothier_
had another store adjacent, to which deepatohed"
his assistant, with !Detractions to bring several of
the beet coats therefrom. He started on his mission,
leaving the proprietor alone with the two customers.
In a moment, the two men started off at a double
quick, one of them having the $55 coat upon his
back. The cry of "stop thief" was raised, and Taylor
was arrested. The other man, who had the coat,
effected his escape. Taylor was committed in de
fault of $6OO bail to answer.
TOUNG FEMALE VAGRANTS
Elizabeth Brice and Anna Crooks, both less than
17 years old, were arraigned yesterday morning.
They were arrested as common streetwalkers.
These two girls absented themselves from home on
Monday night, and one of them was found in a dis
reputable house on Madison street. She was taken
to the lockup. It seems that she and her companion
had changed clothing, one set of outside garments
being much better than the other. Early yesterday
morning the companion called at the station house
to get her clothing. Much to her astonishment and
discomfiture, she was also looked np. This was done
in accordance with a previous request of one of the
parents.
The two girls had been inmates of the House of
Refuge, but the moral reform of that celebrated
institution seems to have had no beneficial effect
upon them. It was a pitiable eight to behold the
mother Of one of the wayward girls and the father
of the other present at the hearing yesterday. The
girls were saucily independent, and though young
years, dissipation had made its unerring marks
upon them. They were entirely beyond parental
control. The House of Refuge was no place for
teem, and, therefore, they were committed to the
county prison.
(Before Mr. Alderman Patehel.
.STABBING CASS.
John Jeffries was arraigned yesterday on the
charge of committing an assault and battery upon
Samuel Thompson with intent to kill. The inves
tigation disclosed the facts that the two men were
In each other's company on Monday night, and at
Lombard and Seventeenth street engaged ln a quar
rel. It is alleged that Thompson was stabbed in
three places during the oonfliot, but not very se
riously injured. Jeffries was committed to await
the result of the injuries to Thompson.

Schomaker h Co. vs. Martin He ward. An action
of replevin to ascertain - the' right of property in a
piano, and damages for its detention. Verdict for
plaintiff. Damages six cents.
Frederick McGlade vs. Work, MOCorich, St Co.
This was an action to recover the margin deposited
with defendants by the plaintiff on a time oontraot
for the purchase of five thousand dollars in Ameri
can gold. The case *as tried once before, bat the
jury disagreed.
The plaintiff, it seems, had bought $340 in gold,
paying therefor WM in currency, and left, as was
alleged, the gold so purchased as a margin on an
additional purchase of WM gold, "buyer 80."
The premium fell so that his margin was exhausted,
and plaintiff being unable to take up the principal,
the defendants sold the gold at the maturity of the
contnua at a loss of more than el,lOO. The plain
tiiPs MMus was based upon the allegation that the
transaction wail a mere wager on the price of gold
thirty days ahead, and not v. bona fide 'sale. After
the evidence the Court directed a non-sutt.

The Commonwealth va. Frank McKeever. The
trial of defendant for the murder of McMaster/4 t h e
boatswain of the English ship Emily Peet, on the
18th of August, was continual yesterday. The
CoMmonwealthlii ease was then reported: The de•
fence seemed to be that McKeever was drunk at the
time of the killhig ; that the fatal stab was inflicted
while in a souffle with the deceased and while both
parties were excited, and that, previous to the fatal
wound given to the deoeased, the prisoner bad re
calved from him a stab in the thigh, whioh required
the attention and care of a physician for a month.
.11The defence attWlpted to show that the killing
wag the Malt Of s tight, both parties being in hot
blood, and that the prisoner, in indicting the fatal
blow, WBB acting in self defence, he having first
been wounded in the thigh by a knife or some sharp
instrument, In the bands of the deceased. •
The case WBB closed at a late hour, and the jury,
after they ware charged by the court, through
Judge Thompson, retired to deliberate upon their
verdict. The court then adjourned.

The success of the stock of the Cherry Run Oil Co.,
we will say, in reply to a correspondent, is caused by
the fact that along this run it has been found that the
wells increase, instead of decrease, from ths, time they
bo gs . to Bow; a phenomenon strikingly illustrated by
the celebrated Reed well, which began at a handled
barrels a day, and now flows three hundred. The com
pany which excites so much attention; in the market,
happens, we are told; to hold four hundred acres on
this run, not far from the Reed well, which could rea
dily be leased at $2,000 an acre. Tile small number of
shares issued by this company, its limited capital stock,
and the sadden value attached by oil dealers to Cherry
Run property, will naturally account for this rapid ad
vance in the price of the stock. It is proposed to double
the eubeorlption list, which will make the price of thiS
stock an average rate. As to whether our correspondent
should invest in this or any securities, we cannot assume
to say. We have answered his question, but must not
be expected to invest his money for him.

In the Circuit Court of King's cou.nty,ll4ew York, on
Monday afternoon, a case of considerable interest to
stock-brokers and their customers was tried. 0. H.
Morgan, a merchant residing in Brooklyn, sued , Pay
ton Jardin and Frank Jardin, stook-brokers doing basi
nese in William street, N. Y., to recover two thousand
flub hundred dollare, nnder the following circumstances:
In March last the plaintiff employed the defendants
to purchase and sell stock for him under his direction,
be agreeing to deposit ten per cent, of the value of all
stocks so purchased by them and held on his account, as
a margin to cover any loss defendants might sustain by
the depreciation of the stock. On the 19th of April fol
lowing the defendants sold the stock which they held
on account of plaintiff, and refused to pay back to him
the amount which he bad deposited as margin. The de
fendants alleged, on their defence, that during the
month of April there was a panic, by which the stocks
held by them for the benefit of the plaintiff became so
much depreciated as to use up the "margin," and that
they gave plaintiff notice to renew It, or, in the event of
his not doing so by a specified day, the stock would be
sold, and they claimed that the plaintiff understood
when be engaged them as brokers that such was the
usual custom among stock brokers. The plaintiff, on
the other hand, denied that he ever received any such
notice. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for
the full amount °Jellied (42,000), with interest and costs
of action.

Pittsburg Petroleum Market, Nov. SS.
The market was unusually quiet to-day, tho opera-
Hone being very light, and restricted almost entirety to
a few small lots of Relined Free Oil. In Crude there
was not a.sinsie operation that we could hear of. owing
principally to the difference between the views of
buyers and sellers, the former contending for a conces
sion in price, to which the latter were unwilling to
submit. In the absence of sales, quotations May be
fairly given at 85c, barrels returned, and 40c, barrels
included, and these may be regarded as the extremes of
the market. Pot Relined, in bond. there appears to be
little or no demand . and on the spot the nominal rates
are 60c. For Free Oil there is a fair Western demand,
and we note a sale of 100 bbls at 81c, and 100 at 82c—the
latter for the Chicago mat ket. Naptha is quiet, but as
the supply is light, theanarket is quoted steady at 20c
