eonunenced the investigation into the cause o theaterun-boller explosion that occurred at the gas fix.

Nue & Baker, on Monday morning. The ju
ties, and witnesses assembled at the Ventral Station
lestezday. and the investigation
lows : progressed as fol.

.of men we re engaged who had all the neceseary
knowledge badtten to their respective duties ; every
p sullen been made to pnevent an explosion ;
a steam gauge was in the office, in a conspicuous
place, where every person could at any moment see
the amount of steam pressure as indicated ; on one
Occasion, recently, the steam was raised to ninety
two pounds, and an order was given to reduce it to
eighty, which the engineer promptly complied with ;
I like him for his prompt compliance; this was
shout two weeks ago; I don't think I can man
much for the engineer as a competent, careful

factory every day ; never saw the engineer under
the influence of liquor ; immediately after the' ex
plesion at Merrick & Son's I asked my son if he had
confidence in the engineer of our establishment, and
he laid yes / asked what wages were given him,
and my son replied Sis 50 per week. which la the
highest rate given as a general aiding ; I asked how
long be had been engaged, and be said ten years;
there was a lapse of three years in this time when
he was employed as an engineer at another place ; I
'Wan in the engine-room on Saturday, and gave espe
cial charge that every care should be taken;
thought the engineer entirely competent; I felt per
fectly safe with him, and-also being acquainted with
the well-imown character of the makers of the boil.
ea, Mende. DlOrgan, Orr, & Co.; the steam averaged
from 70 to 60 pounds pressure; I was informed that
at the time Of the explosion there was a pressure of
65 pounds indicated by the gauge ; others will tell
you of this, of their own knowledge; I was not
there at the time 01 the explosion.
William C. Baker sworn.—l have the supervision
of the manufactory all the time ; am in constant
communication with the engineer; I never smelled
liquor upon him ; consider him every way trust
worthy and competent everybody who knows him
says the same thine ; I was at the manufactory at
72% o'clock Sunday; I bad conversation with the
engineer then respecting the machinery, &e.; herald
everything was all right; I observed the bollere—no
fire in them—the water was cold, and runnin,g out of
the ceche - there was no alteration made in the boil.
fre ; a change had beeP made in the injector to snit
the new engine that had juntas:li introduced; owing
to the extra work, we placed another man to assist
the engineer; steam is required to work the injector
the supply of water is received through an iron pica
Irom the street main ; the engineer had charge of
the boilers and engine; by standing in a certain
place the boilers awl engine could be seen at the
game time ; the water cooks were in the upper
drum ; the distance between the boilers and the en
gine was about twenty-live feet.
Anthony Orr sworn —Ant one or the firm of Mor
gan & Orr ; we built the boilers that exploded ; these
boilers were built in October, 1861; the diameter of
the connection of the two boilers was twelve inches ;
the mum are three inches in diameter, and, I think,
fifty-two "in number the iron of the boilers was
/17e-eixteenthe in th ickness; the boilers were so
arranged as to be very easily cleansed ; we have
built a great many boiler/ on the same plan; 20 far
as concerns Messrs. Cornelius & Baker, they always
were very careful ; they went on the principle of use
ounce of prevention; I suppose the boilers were
blown out on Saturday night so that the injector
might be better arranged; this arrangement Wag
lamely to suit the lessened space between the en
gine and the boilers; no one could pass from the
main building into the engine-room without seeing
the boilers full in the face ; there were three cooks
on the upper boiler; the water line was at the mid
die Mick. [Thle v Mess underwent a long examine.
lion as to the minute construction of the valves,
cocks, pipes, &a. which would not prove interesting
to the general 'elder.]
Charles Fiachott sworn.—Arn a mechanic; made
the steam Connection with the bailer ; the engineer
(Mr. Donaldson) fixed the pipes ; I went there on
Monday morning to see how everything worked;
the engineer gave the 'ejector a trial, and it -
worked first-rate; this was a quarter past seven
o'clock; he stopped the working of the injector
because he old he had not steam enough; I Went
away at 26 minutes past seven o'clock to get some
tools, and in ten minutes the boiler blew up ; the
engineer had stopped the water and steam off, be
cause he wanted to get up more steam, as the en.
gine was not working last enough; the hydrant
was turned off when I left ; I knew the boilers were
blown out on Saturday night ; they were full on
Sunday ; the water came out of the third cock ; there
was no fire in the furnaces at that time ; there was
a pretty good fire on Monday morning ; don't know
bow much water was in the boilers then ; I did not
look at the gauge or the cocks, as it WAD acne of
my business; it does not look well for a mechanic
to look into the business of an engineer.
THIC ENGINIBIER'S STATRIENNT
John Donaldson sworn.—l am the engineer at
Cornelius & Baker's manufactory ; got up
sufficient steam to make the injector work at half
past four o'clock on hunday evening; the injector
-will stop itself when the boiler gets a certain quan
tity of water in it; I was perfectly satisfied that
vverjthing was right ; I then covered up my tires;
found that the injector worked much better in its
new position than in the old ; I went to the manu
factory at six o'clock on Monday morning, and found
the fixes had got down very low ; I raked and fresh
ened them up, and by seven o'clock, the time to go
to work, I had 40 pounds of steam on, and oleW the
whistle ; I hurried up the tires, and in ten minute. I
had 50 pounds ; Charley (previous witness) asked
zee how the pipe Lives getting Mon, and I tried
it a few moments to show kim, but not
bating sufficient steam for the machinery of the
factory I stopped, and having plenty of water in the
boilers I let the fires blow up; went to the steam
gauge and found the steam coming up ; I then went
to the boilers and tried the cooks, and found plenty
of water; I called Conrad, and told him to look at
the steam gauge; it then indicated be pounds; I
then went up stairs to see if they were bringing my
brEakfaat, also to get some oil and other things, and
then passed into the office to ace the thermometer,
so es to know whether I should turn any steam on
to heat the place; the steam gauge registered
pounds; I then returned towards the engine house,
and, just as I reached the archway, the explosion
°sculled ; Conrad was near the boiler when I went
out ; I tont Mtn to go and look at the gauge; this
saved his lifs.
The engineer was now examined at great length
by the jurors, resulting as follows I always opened
the tri -cocks to let the wind escape when the water
is being let in ; this helps to keep them clear ; I
have not seen the boilers since the explosion • I did
of feel like making an examination of the Wreck;
I went home and remained there all day ; I always
ascertain the amount of water in the boilers by try
ing the cocks of both ; I would not trust to the re
gister of one boiler for the amount of water in the
other boiler; I cleaned the mud-drum three weeks
ago ; I had a light in there ; I sounded the drum and
loundit good; I tried the cocks of the boiler at half
past seven o'clock on Monday . morning; there Was
plenty of water then, more than I usually work
with; my experience teaches me that one hour
would be required to reduce that water to the extent
of foflr inches in the boiler • the explosion occurred
Within three or four minute; after I /eft ; I told the
- Noung man to watch the gauge, and not let the steam
get above eighty pounds; he was near the gauge
when the explosion occurred.
Conrad. Shauerman sworn.—This engineer was so
essentially Teutonic as scarcely able to make him
self properly understood. He testified as follow;: I
am a stamper ; the engineer called me to look at the
gauge, and says, "Don't let it get up more than 80
pounds f' well, when I went there and looked it was
e 6 pounds; then I went to my place for a little bit,
and then when I was just going back the explosion
Seek place, midi didn't go back ; I would have looked
at the gauge if the boiler had not blown up.
Chas. F. Keaton sworn.—Am an engineer at
'Wood & Perot's ; have been a fireman and engineer
for 24 years; know Mr. Donaldson;.have always
beard him spoken of as a good man ; on one owe..
aion I told M. Baker that I did net think he could
get a better man ; he had run an engine for Xr.
Wright, the umbrella maker and gave great setts-
Diction ; I think $13.50 a good salary for an engi
neer. This witness gave in a considerable amount
of evidence of a sort of rambling character, that
would be of no interest to the general reader.
George Kurtz was sworn, but no interesting facts
were elicited from him, in addition to the above,
except that he assisted in ienveyimg some of the
wounded to the hospital.
The investigation here closed for the present, and
an adjournment was agreed upon until half past 3
o'clock next Tuesday afternoon.
713 R EASTERN PRNITRNTIARY.—Accora-
Iog to the thirty-fifth annual report of the inspectors
Art the Eastern Penitentiary, there were repotted,
during the past year, one hundred and eighty-three
prisoners ; one hundred and ninety-four were dis
charged, leaving three hundred and lifty-eight in the

died eighty-nine were white males, and nine
teen White tamales; forty-five colored males, and
lave colored females. The average number for the
year was three hundred and fifty-three, or forty
three less than in 1862. The coat per day for main
taining the convicts was tWenty.two oents. being
- tee per cent. in advance of preceding years. It ap
peare that out of 4,271 prisoners who have been dis

Neither have we met to devise means to huten the
tuns when we shall compete with the lager-soaked,
shallow-pated at the ballot-box. Uncle Abraham
has wisely set shoddy on horseback, and shoddy is
riding as fast as he can to the devil. In order to get
there he will ride over your heed.. You can save
him by standing erect and maintaining your rights.
Ladles, we have met here to prevent shoddy from
going you know where, and to keep him from drag
ging you there.
She then introduced Dlr. Frederick A. Van Cleve,
who said he was here to say, God speed you in your
efforts. It is a notorious fact, that no kind of labor
is so poorly paid as that of female labor. When yolk
take into consideration her unrequited toil, the in
ference is that she lives upon the air. lie was in
formed that a firm engaged on Government work
three years ego paid to their workwomen an ave
rage income of $2 75 weekly. Some got more, others
lees. This, be said, was higher by many per cent.
than is now given. The contractors have, by
reason of their desire to obtain contracts, en.
tered into a competition with the other bidders,
and in doing so they have put your labor down to a
beggarly price. Insist upon being paid the same
price a. men, and they will not object to your being
employed. The work in which you are engaged is
a gigantic one. It will require great toil and perie•
verance on your part. If you are united, if you are
persevering, you cannot fail in this, the greatest
work ever started by women. One and all should
be interested in this object, and it will tell upon fu
ture generations. Your condition is not only at
stake, but the condition of unborn millions. You
have no conception, perhaps, of the magnitude of
this work in which you are engaged. You have
come here, I am assured, not to mill your employers
hard names. You are not here as beggars, but as
women asking them men to give yen *fat you h ave
earned by your toil and the sweat of your brow.
Rise in your might, and dictate terms to these men ;
frame a scale of prices, such as will be just and
equitable, take them to your employer', and if they
refuse to accede to your request strike, and re
fuse to do another stitch for them. In a work
like this the smile of God is upon you ; and let
me tell you that man is not the coldheart ed person
that some of you think he is. Upon whom does the
tax fall 1 Not upon the contractor, but upon the
consumer. If you succeed in aciaompushing this
object, it will not only increase the physical strength
of woman, but also her motel strength; and then
you will not see so many emaciated forms, nor the
fall of so many by that fatal dileale•-•00111UMptiOn.
The minutes of the last meeting were then read
and adopted.
A number of letters from working women were
then read.
One lady write, that she gets eve cents a pair tor
overalls, and can make, with the aid of a machine,
six pain a day, which is thirty cents. Another amid
Nhe•waa making shirts for $l.OB a dozen, and could
not make over three per day.
Several other letters were also read, showing the
low pricer paid to working women, and the total
amount they make per week,
A long preamble, with resolutions annexed, stating
the wrongs of the working women, and proposing
the appointment of a committee to draw up an ap
peal to the employers for a more equitable and gene
rous remuneration, were then read, and uncut.
mostly adopted.
Mrs. Grew, Mrs. Hayhurst, and Mr. Van Oleve
were appointed the committee to draw up the ap- .
peal.
Mrs. Grew was then introduced. She made an
eloquent and very effective address, after which the
meeting sojourned.
PRIVATE THEATRICALS.—The sanitary
Fair is to be a success, for it has enlisted the aympa
tbies of all *lasses of the community, and every
device ever conceived of in brought into reguiiition
to add to the Mat and profit of the Fair. A new
sensation is stirring the young folks, and they em
brace it with commendable eagernesa. It has taken
the form of theatrical exhibitions at private resi
dences, and the benefit nights, that is, say all nights,
are for the Sanitary Fair. A very successful exhi
bition of this kind was given last evening , at the
house, southwest corner of Tenth and 'Wallace
sheets, In which a number of young persons of both
sexes acquitted themselves to the great delight of an
admiring parlor. Fifty cents was the piles of ad
mission, and so great was the rush for secured seats.
that many persons were obliged to go away without
finding any. Accordingly it was agreed that the per.
formance should be repeated this evening, and every
other evening, in imitation of all great plays whose
excellence warrant a long 61 run.""

A TBSBATBITTIO AGBNT.
. The object of the following Advertisement is to set
fo.th something new in" the development of a new Phi
losophy something true, having for its basis immutable
feels; something reasonable, speaking forth the Lin
guine of nature, and something I elPortant, as it reveals
the only true rationale tot the Warbles/. MA of man.
Nearly five years ago, Prof. BOLLES located
himself in the city of Philadelphia, at 1220 WALNUT
Street. and announced his great discovery in the thera
peutic application of Magnetism, Chtlyanism, and other
modifications of Electricity for the cure of the most ob
stinate, acute, and chronic diseases.
In announcing to the public a discovers so intimately
connected with the well-being of our race, it may be
deemed proper to • make a few prefatory remarks to
Prepare the mind of the reader for the reception of evi•
deuces and facts too incredible for bellet
This discovery is the result of more than ten years'
bard and scientific investigation. It develops not only
a reliable system for the diagnosis of disease, but the
only efficient and sellable meats of cure. Its great supe
riority over all other systems for the care of disease has
been practically tested for more than ten years. and for
nearly five years in Philadelphia, where twelve thou
sand invalids have been treated, suffering from almost
every form and condition of disease common to all sec
tions of our country, who. after treatment by the most
eminent medical men in Philadelphia, Boston, New
York, and other cities, had been given up as Insurable;
and in nearly every case a perfect case had been effected
by Professor BOLLES. •
Many of the most obstinate of the above cases treated,
have been warranted by special contract, and not a fail
ure has been made in any warranted case. As indubi
table evidence of the foregoing statement. Professor
BOLLES has adduced in the following advertisement,
testimonials from °Wrens of Philadelphia, who had
suffered from a complication of diseases, for four. ten.
and even thirty years, and had availed themselves of the
best medical shill in this and other' cities. anti were.
RPM up ae incurable, but afterwards were fully restored
to health by a few applications of Electricity. such an
array of evidence as will hereafter appear in this adver
tisement, is not merely to show that Professor BOLLES
has made an important discoverY in the application of
Pasctscieity as a therapeutic agent. bat emphatically to
show that nearly all diseases which have been consider
ed ir. curable, in all past ages. and are so considered at
the present time by the most eminent medical men, can
be speedily and permanently cared by the different mo
difications of Hiectricity. when applied in harmony with
liis discovery of the action of Electricity through the
cerebro-spinal axis.
Professor B. has cured, is curing, and further pledges
himself to cure a certain class of diseases acknowledged
to he llncurable by any known process of medication,
diseases that never have, nor never can be controlled.
only by his mode of applying the various modifications
of Electricity-
He is often asked for what diseases le Electricity
adapted? In reply he would say, for all diseases to
which flesh is heir-,sente or chronic, inflammatory or
paralytic. In all oases where medicine is beneficial, and
in ail cases beyond the influence and control of medi
cine. Electricity has the power of arousing the vital
force by changing its Polarities. thereby regalaling se•
oration, excretion, digettion, and circulation, sad bring
ing the system back to neondition of harmony and health.
Thousands of the most reliable individuals in this city
who have :been treated by Professor 8., MO nainnt
stiact, can and will vouch for the above statement of
facts in their own astonishingcnres. He verily believes
that he has eared more obstinate diseases during the live
years, or nearly, of his practice in the city of Philadel
phia, than all the medical men that have ever practiced
in this city, either allopsthically, honmeepsthically, or
by any other pithy. This assertion may look like bout
ink. but it is true, every word of it; for who ever heard
of such astonishing cutest As if by magic. obstinate dis
eases, which have for many years resisted all other
treatment, are often cured in twenty minutes, and often
in lees time; and in ail cases a warrantee is given when
the patient desires It. Who shall properly estimate the
incalculable blessing thus so . speedily conferred on suf.
ferintranity. when. instead. or being dragged for
mont and thrown on beds of languishing, health is
restore by Professor BOLLES' treatment in many cases
almost instantaneously? In conclusion, we would ear,
for the encouragement of the dyspeptic. neuralgic, con
sumptive. rheumatic, paralytic, epileptic, and , in fine.
all those on whom medical treatment ever did and ever
will prove a total failure, that there is still hope in your
ease, and a fair chance for your recovery at MO WAL
BUT Street.
00Mf7.IMSNTABT BESOLUTIONS—Faost fiEsnroAL
Max Ann Oraints.—At the close of a goatee of Lectures,
delivered to us, membere of one of the many Masses of
Professor C. H. OOLLSS, who has been developing hie
discovery for nearly four years. at UM Walnut street, in
the cite of Philadelphia. in the arwlication of Galvanism.
Magnetism, and other modifications of Electricity,, the
following resolutions were unanimously passed:
Reeolved, That as we have been eye witnesses for
many weeks in the Institution of Prof. Bolles. and have
good reason to believe that he has discovered new
'Aping in the application of the different mediae Atone of
Biectricity to the various diseased conditions of the hu
man system; and that , in the treatment of different
diceaser,•we have been convinced that, In his hand, as
also hie students. the apolleation of Electricity is a relia
ble therapeutic; and that he has taught ne a new. ra
tional, and scientific Philosophy, and we believe the
outs reliable theory of disease and mode ol rare.
Resolved, That. in our judgment, the philosophy ad
vanced. and so clearly demonstrated in the Course of .
Lectures, is entirely new and original with Professor
Bolles, and not known to the ,Medical Profession, and
that the great success which has attended his practice in
this city is alone the result of his scientific discovery of
Electrical laws hitherto unknown to man. and that the
many failures of other men in this city, using this
might , agent. is owing to their ignorance of the true
principles of Electricity.
Resolved. That we, in duty to suffering humanity, and
for the great progress of the human race in approxi
mating to a condition of health and happiness, commend
the Professor and his theory and practice to the public.
and bid him God-speed, as we belieVe his great mission
is one of benevolence and mercy. and calculated to basa
lt humanity in the only Scientific and reliable way to a
final restoration That we
and physical happiness.
Reso feed, That we tender to Prof. Bolles our thanks
for his lucid instruction and kind attention to us, Indi
vidually and as a class; that he has redeemed every
pledge or assurance made by him, and that in parting
from him he has our best wishes for his happiness and
prosperity, and we heartily commend him to all mien.
title investigators, and also to the diseased of body and
mind.
Also, Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting
be signed by each member or the class, and published in
the city papers
