    The Blockade-Runner.

bird. The crocodile's bird is called the Twistable.
Yankeedom's bird is called the blockade-runner.
Yanlceedom is the crocodile. The blockaderunner
is the Trochilus.
Couple these two Ideas—Tankeedom and the
crocodile. They are worth the coupling. The cro
codile is asleep. He does not sleep on both ears.
He sleeps with one eye open. His jaws are also
open. Rows of teeth appear, sharp, fanged, point
ed, nunderoue, carnivorous, omnivorous. Some of
she teeth are wanting ; say a dozen. Who knocked
there teeth cull A demon. What demon? Or,
perhapr, an angel I What angel The angel is Se
cession; the demon is rebellion. Ormond and Ahri
man ; Baldur and Loki; the Devil and St. Dunstan.

Furl' vs. The 'City o! Philadelphia. Before, re
ported. Verdict for plaintiff; $392 93.
Ilf Ery Strodick vs. Franklin Fell and Charles M.
Norris. This was an action by which it was sought
to charge the defendants as officer' of the Seaman's
Saving Fund. It was in evidence that. Franklin
Fell was president, and Cnarlea N. Norris secretary
and treasurer of said saving fund at the time of its
asoisninent, for the benefit of creditors, at which
time the plaintiff was a depositor therefor. Snob
-being the fact, plaintiff in this action alleged that
they were liable in law as the officers of said insti
tution, which WAS denied by the defendants. The
testi:messy of plaintiff' having closed, the Judge di
rected a non•ault, on the ground that defendants
were rot liable unless male fides could be proven

Sinich re. Ring & Baird, and John . Welk & Co.—
agent. This was an action to recover the amount
Of a bill for work done by plaintiff by his agent for
John Welk & Co,, who, It is alleged, were the agents
Of King & Baird. The defence set up was that there
was no agency, but that John:Welk wee simply
employed to sell certain books which King '.9e Baird
bad I- - ought at a sheriff's sale of John Welk & Co.'s
property, and that Welk & Co. had no authority to
contract any debts in the name of _King k Baird.

The Cathedral Robbery.

man who was arraigned at the Central Station yes.
ttrday afterneon, on the charge of being implicated
In the robbery at the Oathearel March of at. Peter
and St. Paul on Sunday night last. The following
evidence wax elicited :
Officer Little testified that on Sunday night, about
ball past eleven o'clock, as he was peeping along
Seventeenth street, he saw a man standing in Sum.
mer street ; passed by him, and found he was a
stranger ; he had come to a dead stand opposite Mr.
Eeterte house ; I bid him good night and passed en,
and crossed over to the opposite corner • I tried the
Bishop's door and found it fastened ; / turned and
went toward s Eighteenth street, and when I got
part of the way I tamed back; the man I mit nigt
Lad, in the meantime , got to the back part of the
chapel ; heard a whistle given as a goal, and pre.
eimOy the gate was thrust open by tills man, and
three men rushed out; the cry of "this way ," ' 3 this
Way," was raised; I sprang my rattle ; the prisoner
bad a candlestick.
Question. Are yon sere he is the man?
Witness. I am certain. After I ascertained the
robbery had been committed, I arrested this man at
a tavern at Ninth street and Maple alley; I eras
maw him on the street; he want into the tavern; he
claimed last night to be theproprietor of the tavern ;
at least he told - the Lieutenant so last night; i told
him what he had been arrested for, and he replied
that he had not been out of the house on Sabbath
sight ; he was very nervous when / put my hand

A. Beautiftd, bright moonlight; never saw the
noon clearer than it Was then.
Q. Yon are quite sure the prisoner is the man yen

A. I am positive he is the man.

Rev. kir. O'Reilly, on being affirmed, testified that
a candelabra on the altar bad been broken up; a large
alabaster vase was completely smashed ; an attempt
Lad been made to blow open the fireproof with gun
powder I might say that I was aroused by the VlO.

and was informed by the policoofficor that robbers
had broken into the chapel ; I came down, and tried
to get into the sanctuary ; found the lock was so

rob the Bishop's home, but not the chapel.
The investigation here closed, and the defendant

Alleged Policy Dealers Arrested.
Abel S. Clark, of No. 208 Gold street; Peter It.
Gallagher, 310 Chestnut street, and Francis Lewis,
ad Race street, were arraigned yesterday on the
Oath of William Howard, charging them with sell
ing lottery policies. The witness testified that he
had spent about the sum of $BO, and finally "Strunk"
Clark for $204, and that Clark refused to pay him.
The witness was determined to enter suit against
all the dealers from whom he had purchased poll-
Mee. The defendants were bound over in the sum
of $l,OOO each to newer at court,

Nears. Benedict, 'Ryland, and O'Neill, who were
arrested in July last on the charge of conspiracy
against the United States Government, are at
literty. Two of them were seen walking along
Chestnut street yesterday afternoon. The other.

Alleged 'Highway Robbery.
Two men were arraigned yesterday, on the charge
of highway robbery. They were committed for a
further hearing. It is said that as Mr. Cleo. Clinton
was walking alone Richmond a treet, belo V 7 A lieshen y
avenue, in the Nineteenth ward, about if &cloak
on Tuesday night, he was knocked down and robbed
of one dollar, all the money he had about him. He
was struck in the face with a hard substance, and
fell insensible to the pavement. He was found in
this condition by police officers, who removed him
to his home. he was unable to leave his house to
attend the hearing.

All the Blankets are to be 75 inches long by 67 inches
wide, and of the weight of 3.1875 tbs, or say 3 3.16 Jim, on
which a variation of 0.1875, or 3-18ths of a lb may be
allowed. They must be single, and not in pairs, and
packed in cases of one hundred each. The value of the
cases to be paid for at a price to be determined by the
Inspector.
The Blankets are to be inspected at the factory where
made, a...d none will be accepted or paid for but each as
are approved on in enaction.
DetherieS Wad be made as follows:.One-tenth of the
amount contracted for per week, commencing within
one month of the date of the contract.
Failure to deliver at a specified time will subject the
contractor to a forfeiture of the quantity due at that
time.
No bid will be considered which does not come from a
manufacturer of blankets or regular dealer In such-goods.
Bids will be considered for the delivery of the blankets
at the factory, as well as at the agency above men
tioned.
Bach bid is to be accompanied by the names of the sure
ties of the proposer.
Each party obtaining a contract will be required to
enter into bonds, with approved sureties, for the faithful
execution of the same
Upon the award being made, successful bidders will
be notified and furnished with forms of contract and
bond.
The Department reserves the right to reject any, or all
