    Great Cities of the World.
To the Wier of The Pre4B:
Sin It is intpresting to notice that the great ci
ties of the world;iin all ages, are found inland, like
Philadelphia, and not on great ocean harbors. The
following are a few examples Alexandria, Amster
dam, Antwerp, Ave, Bankok, Berlin, Brussels, Ca
diz, Calcutta, Canton, Damascus, The Hague, Jerul
salern, Lisbon, Liverpool; London, Mexico, Mon
treal, Moscow, Nankin, New Orleans, Oporto, Paris,
"Pekin, Quebec, Rangoon, Rome, Rotterdam, Rouen,
ISt. Petersburg, Stockholm, &c. The fact is both in
teresting and curious. Who will explain it I
I am, respectfully yours,

THE NEW YORK SCHOOLMASTERS.
BY TIM BAUD OF TowEß4Kra..
On the island of Manhattan,
Where the pigs all squeak in Latin,
And the turkke which they fatten
For the httchen,
Have the best of education,
And all sorts of information
Are quite rich in;'
Where the peop7e of all classes -
Lick up learning like molasses.
And each chimney-sweep surpasses
Athletics,
Or that most profound of sages
W ho the little imps encages
In a bottle
Oa that isle for learning glorious,
Hark! the teachers are uproarious.;.
How they rage like noisy b yroas,
While they utter
Much complaint because their payment
Does not furnish them with raiment.
Bread and batter!
Oh, how different the case is
In our Pennsylvania places,
Where the intellectual graces
Thrive and fatten;
.Lll,dur teachers here are paid well,
And at Tower Hall arrayed well;

HEADQUARTERS HOME GUARD,
CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, June 2, 1863.
-
[Special Order No, -9. .
The announcement of the death of Colonel JOHN
RICHTER JONES, of the 58th Regiment Pennsylvania.
Volunteers, in action recently, - in - the Department of
North-Cerolina, cornea to ns as one of the saddening
realities - of destructive war.; :,,.-:,.,
. . .
Born of Revolutionary;stoelt, and eduCatedin this city.-
baying been graduated at the :Unircrsicv--01—PerdraYlva
nia with high honors, and admitted to *bar in the year
1827, Colonel 'Jones became a successful. advocate in.our
varienticourhs, and continued in fttll:pratticelill the year,
18:.13,.when he was appointed an Associate Judge of the
Court of Common Pleas of the city and county of Phila
delphia. whose duties he performed creditably to him
self, and with satisfaction to his fellow-citlzens, until
the year 1847, when his term of office ended:
On'his retirement from the bench he applied himself to
agriculture and to literary pursuits, in Salvia county,
in this State, where he was soon distinguiehe'd as one of
the most useful and influential men in tha county.
On the ,occurrence - of the present rebellion. Colonel
Jones, with that ardent zeal for the honor and welfare of
the country . vrhich characterized him, though. without
experience in military affairs, offered the services of a re
giment of infantry to the Government for the term of
three years, and, with it, was at once mustired into the
service as its colonel. '
Haring joined the army. at Fortress Neuree.he shared
in the capture of Norfolk, and, after much active service
in its vicinity, lie was transferred to the Department of
North Carolhaa,in which he has served with great credit
and distinction until his death, a few days since, in
battle. .
Raving the cond. erten of his superior officers and the
affection of his 'nen, Colonel Jones was frequeutl3 - se
lecud for the execution of delicate and difficult enter
prises against the enemy, the success of which was such
that his name and his regiment became fszo was and ter
riblelto the enemy in the region in which The operated.
A fanner, a scholar, a gentleman, a soldier, and a
Christian, Colonel John Richter Jones illustrated the
character of each in the versatility of his employment,
and sealed with his blood his devotion to hie country,
its integrity and. its unity.
An example to men of mature age, and a shining light
to the young in the path of duty. the name of John Rich
ter Jones is inscribed high on the-muster-roll of fame,
while his country mourns the sacrifice of Such a man in
