CHARLESTON A DESERTED CITY.—TliCre
are not twenty ladies at present living in Charles
ton, S. C. The city is almost deserted, the streets
empty, and one-half of them in blackened ruins,
since the great tire. The spectacle is described as a
yid and terrible one—lifeless and funereal—a fit se
quel to the great crime of rebellion. In the loyal
city of Philadelphia business is prosperous and the
streets are crowded daily by ladies and gentlemen,
the latter of whom are generally clad in elegant and
comfortable garments made at the Brown-Stone
clothing Hall of Rockhill & Wilson, Nos. 603 and

SPECIAL NOTICES.
TIIE IV - REDING.
Dr THE BARD OF TOWER HALL.
Say, Tommy Toddleberg, whence come you?
From a nuptial scene both brilliant and new,
Tommy Totldleherg, how looked the bride?
As charming as Eden, by love sanctified.
Tommy Toddleberg, what did she wear?
A robe of thin muslin, as limpid as air.
Tommy Todd ieberg, what on her bead ?
A wreath of white roses, commingled with red.
Tommy Toddleberg, looked she quite fine ?
Her garments were rich and her form was divine.
Tommy Toddleberg, what gems had she ?
Modest beauty alone, and none brighter could be.
Tommy Toddleberg, how looked her feet?
Her white satin slippers were peerlessly neat.
Aud how looked the bridegroom, Tom Toddleberg, say?
As blooming as morning and bright as the day.
Tommy Toddieberg, looked he not glad?
As the peach tree In spring time, with gay blossoms clad.
Tommy Toddleberg, how was he dressed?
In a suit bought at Bennett's, the finest and best.
Tommy Toddleherg, I ask you no.more;
For if a full suit from Bennett's he wore,
He was fit in• the side of his lady to shine,
Though tier dress was superb and her form was divine.
We have the largest assortment of ready-made Cloth

This Society is much in want of fonds just now to en
able it to carry ou its operations among the poor of our
city. The demands upon it at this season of the year are
always heavy and, although somewhat lighter this
Winter than for many preceding ones, they are much
heavier than the Society can tne.t in its present finan
cially weak condition. It, therefore, through its Board
of Managers:, appeals most earnestly to the public to
furnish it speedily with means for the prosecution of the
very important work it has ttndertaken. Its past history
is known to the community, and the Board trnsts that
this appeal will be responded to as promptly and liberally
as former ones. Donations may be sent to the Treasurer,
