Yictor-'Hugo has written voluminously and .well; but
the present ia bia only groat work. All the rest stand no
comparison with this. The characters are so vividly
pam'ed that wo almost see them move and hear thorn
talk. Unfortunate and loving Quasimodo; the dashing
and hesrtlesa Captain Phoebus; Grißgorie, the literary
Bohemian; the Satanic Priest;, the Gipsey Kings, great
and;small; the mob of Paris; Esmeralda, thebeantirul
dancing.girl; and evc-n the wilful little goat—how.they
marshal themselves before 113 ! The present translationis
a vast improvement bn some previous ones—all of which
are happily out of print. The translator bas-succeeied
