    Interesting Report of Limit_ Coisuassia-
Sag Phelps, of the 'United States Coast
Survey
The following graphic report adds mother page
to the splendid history now making by the Ameri
can navy. The officers of the Coast Survey, not
oontent with rendering invaluable scientific ser
vices, rival the regular navy in their daring opera
tions against the enemy ;
U. 8. COAST SURVEY STORMER " CORWIN,"
\VINT POINT, Ye., MAY 8,1882.
Dean Bin : It ghe's . me remittere to inform you that
during the recent important movements in York river,
the Corwin has performed her full share.
On Saturday morning, the 4th instant. we discovered
that Yorktown and Gloucester Point were abandoned,
which was instantly telegraphed to the flag-ship. The
squadron immediat.ly welebed, and stood up the elver.
when near Gloucester Point, I received orders to take
the Currituck." in company, and proceed up the river,
about four miles, to reconnoitre the shores, and inter
cept the enemy's transports and other vessels. We start
ed attend at full emelt, and when near queen's Creek,
discovered a company of the rebel cavalry, which our
shells soon diepersed ; immediately afterwards, observed
Bigler's wharf to bo on fire in several places, and three
schooners and a launch escaping to the windward. Our
shot soon hove to a schooner and the launch, (loaded
with storm, and the einem of Generel Bales and Lieut.
Whitney, C. S. A..) and the other vessels were fired and
abandoned, their crews escaping to the shore
Having reached a point - thirteen miles above York
town, In ecnateuence of my orders, I was compelled to
return, and, after having secured the prizes and cap
tured a sloop in ederition. I steamed down Iberia - et, and,
when within about five miles of Yorktown. I met one of
the gunboats, and her Captain (T. H. Patterson), di
rected me to cover his vessel in a reconnoissance towards
the bead of the river. I immediately cast off the prizes,
and led up to West Point, where we discovered the place
to be abandoned, several partially-built gunboats and
the York river light beat en fire, and two regiments that
corning arrived hem llielintmel, on their way to York
town, Met leaving in the care, and while flags waving on
shore.
Having executed the duty assigned, we commenced
our return, an] soon PAFS"Ii. the Currituck, bound up,
with orders to burn the ritilrosd bridge.
On my arrival apposite Btel-r's wharf, (having cap
tured another eehecner an the way down), I reeeivad di
rections to return and prevent the destruction of the
bridge, which duty was succeestrilly accomplished.
Upon my second arrival at West Point, at 9.30 P. M.,
Captain Shankland. et the Currituck, reported that he.
bad landsd and hoisted the Union flag, and had found
about fifty prisoners of the rebels (mostly women and
children), "living in a horrible condition, in sheds, and
without the common neceseariee of life." These people
were residents of Elizabeth City county, and sent here
by General Magruder on account of their Union pro
clivities. lat once decided to remain and hold posses
sion of the place, protect the people and prevent a fur
ther destruction of property by the rebels. until the ar
rival of the commanding officer of the naval division.
On the sth inst. we seized a schooner in the Pammskey
river, and also the C. S. sloop Water-Wich," recently
abandoned by Capt. Thos. Jefferson Page. During the
day I secured much information regarding the move
ments of the rebel army. which was transmittal to the
proper authoriy. On the 6th the naval vessels arrived,
conveying the division of Gen. Franklin. Daring the
evening I received information that the enmity would
attempt to destroy the town during the night, which I
at once retorted to the commanding officer, and received
orders to anchor near the ship yard, where I could com
mand the approaches to the town.
Aboutll A. M., on the 7th. I heard that about 1,063
-of the troops recently stationed at Gloucester Point, (who
bad retreated up the ncrth side of the York river with
the view of crossing at this place , and were prevented by
-our presence), were creasing the Mattapony river at Fra
zier's Ferry, thirty miles above here. I immediately
asked and obtained permission to go after them, and by
.3 P. M., had carried the old flag thirty-six miles above
West Point, till our progress was checked by our draught
of water. I learned that 4,000 Of the rebels bad passed
the previous night, on their way to Dunkirk Bridge.
CI found white flags hoisted 071 both shores of the river s
and the people generally apparently pleased to see the
Union flag once more among them.
About three miles above this place, the Mattapony has
been obstructed by the sinking of six vessels in the chan
nel, but we passed round the south side of them in five
fathoms water.
In the evening, we returned to our anchorage. and
during the night shelled out a party who were endeavor
ing to set fire to the timber in the ship yard, which had
escaped the general destruction by the rebels on their
evacuation of the Voce during the 4.h inst.
I will mention that we had the pleasure of firing the
last wawa shot at Yorktown on the evening precious to
the evacuation s and that one of our 12-pound Gotclikiaa
shell, projected a fraction over four miles, exploded and
killed five of the enemy, and one of the solid shot passed
about one half a mile beyond the town, or 4,4 miles.
All the prisoners who have been captured, or have
given themselves up to me, agree in saying that the rebel
army from Yorktown ("125,000 well mea") will fall
back to the Cbickahomtny, and that Gen. Johnston de
clares that lee will not attempt to make a stand wbere
our gunboats can cut up his men; they also say that the
people w feel that !t is all over with them," and soldiers
desert whenever they can.
I am, respectfully, your oborlieut servant,
