    Terrific Explosion from Benzine.
LOSS OF LIPMI.
Yesterday afternoon, about half past five, a terrific 6.7:-
plosion occurred in the Twentieth ward, from the use of
benzine, in Wright's japan varnish manufactory. The
building stood on harebell defier, between Meetier and
Diamond street, and between Sixth and Seventh, and was
a three-story brick, with a two-story back building.
The building was originally intended for two dwelling
houses, but was afterward converted into a factory, fdr
the manufacture of japan varnish Between the main
and back building was a double partition wall. The fur
run and kettles for boiling the varnish were in the let
ter place. In the front building was a large tank for re
ceiving the varnish after it was boiled, and which was
conveyed through a pipe. At the time of the accident,
varnish was being boiled in one of the kettles, about six
feet in diameter. The content, of the kettle took lire,
and erodild a moet terrific explosion, which made a loud
report, shaking all the houses for squares, ands mpletely
demolishing the whole factory, nothing being left stand
ing except the partition wall between the two buildings.
At the time of the accident only two men were in the
apiece, one of whom was Mr. James L. 'Wright, the pro
prietor—a young unmarried man, about 20 years of age,
-who has succeeded his father in the business, the latter
laving been known in this city ter many years as a cele
brated manufacturer of jkpan varnish. The other per
.eon In the factory was a German employee named Adam
Herbott, who was sitting on the floor cleaning a pan
near the large kettle in which the varnish was being
in the second story of the back building. Her
butt wet blown out of the building, and fell eu the
ground a distance of about twenty-lire yards. When
he recovered from the shock he raised himself up
by means of a fence, and supported himself until as
sistance arrived. Be was immediately conveyed to the
adrug. sten. of Pr. Ferns, Sixth end Germantown road,
where his injuries were attended to, after which he was
conveyed to his residence In Farmer street. near Girard
Avenue, Ly two of the Nineteenth-ward officers. Dr.
alelfrich was then summoned, when he was found to have
sustained severe internal injuries, besides spraining his
-ankle and being burned in a in id shocking manner
about the head, neck, and bands. The physician thinks
his life may be eared, although his situation is very cri
tical
At the time of the exi.lo.4olt, Mr. Wright, the proprie
tor, was down stairs in the trout part of the building.
About twenty minutes after the accident his body was
:found buried under the ruins, where he had been shock
ingly crushed. When lifted up, he breathed once or
twice, but was unable to speak. and expired almost im
mediately. The body was taken to the establishment of
Mr. Philip A. Schuyler, undertaker 9 near by, and sub
seunently removed to the rc..§.l.lenc. of ide fsther, iu tfew
Market street, above CallowhilL
The 'bricks and other portions of the ruin were hurled
•by the explosion several *mares, falling on roofs, in
yards, &o , but, fortunately, no QM, W£l. seriously injured.
A son of Lieut. Jacoby, of the Twentieth ward police,
.who resides in Sixth street, a Mee feet from where the
factory stood, was struck with a brick and slightly
injured. The varnish in the kettle took fire and flowed
wrer the ruins, setting firs to the work and causing an
.alarm to be rung by the State House bell. The firemen
were promptly on the epvt, and soon extinguished the
limes before any damage had been dmetothe surround
ing prop. rty.
The Fire Marshal was soon at the scene, but it was
impossible last evening for him to procure any satisfac
tory account of the accident, Mr. Wright, the proprietor,
;being killed, and the German only being employed to do
the hauling forthe eataldishment. The latter bad never
done any work about the place until yesterday afternoon,
when he was assisting.
He stated to the Fire Marshal that all he knows about
the horrible affair is, that Mr. Wright was down stairs
and he up stain', near the kettle containing the boiling
- varnish; be heard a kind of hissing noise, followed by a
largo blank and a loud explosion , he saw the building
falling all round him, the roof going up, and himself
moving through the air with great rapidity. He lust all
recollection, and, upon recovering, narrated the whole
thin. '
as if it had been a dream. The German states
that Mr. Wright bad always used turpoutiutt in
the manufacture of varnish until within a day or two
since, when be determined to try the experiment of using
benzine. Mr. W. informed him that he knew of the
dangers attending the use of this combustible, but
thought that, with proper care ant attention, all acci
dents might be avoided. The kettle u Welt exploded
contained some two or three barrels of benzine. So far,
the precise ranse of the accident can only be the sub
ject of conjecture, but that the explosion was occasioned
by benzine there can be no doubt.
Coroner Conrad will hold an inquest this morning on
the body of Mr. Wright.

Anniversary Festival of the Young Men's
Christian Association
The listriversary festival of the Young Men's Christian
Association of this city, which was celebrated at the
Musical Fund Hall last evening, was one of the most
pleasing social entertainments of the kind that we have
ever attended. Much of the credit of this success is due
to the good sense displayed by thom to whom the ar.
tenements for it were entrusted. The large hall, which,
we must say, never exhibited its beautiful interior to
better advantage, was tilled with just a sufficient num
ber to impart a social character to the entertainment,
and comfort to the grate. The platform was tastefully
decorated with tw o Immense Ameritalli begs, and along
the two tables, which extended centrally the entire length
of the hall, seating 2to persons at one time, the colors, of
the Union, iu the form of diminutive flags, imparted a
patriotic fragrance to the tempting 'viands which graced
them.
The supper itself may be best described se an elegant
collation, including tea and coffee, and concluding with
ice creams, jellies, and confectionery. Most of the pro
visions wet° presented for the occasion by individuals,
and as their preparation was conducted by a number of
the lady friends of the Association. under the competent
direction of Mrs, Rebecca Hammitt, the Mtpcilso of the
festival was comparatively little. The proceeds realized
trom the sale of tickets go into the fund for carrying on
the general objects of the Association.
Music by a quartet from Hembree Band, singing by
the entire company, indulging in refrestuneuto, oinking
addreseee and listening to them, jlTOMPlifklihg, Ewa mu
tual conrereation, conetituted the acted programme of
the evening,
At half past seven o'clock precisely, amid strains of de
licious music, the festivities of the evening were for
mally initiated by Geerse H. Stuart, Esq., taking the
chair at the stage-end of one of the tables. After all
were helped, Mr. Stuart, in a few brief remarks, gave
an outline of the work which the Aaaociatioa is now
doing, especially among the soldiers. We need hardly
add that Mr. Stuart graced his office, se chairman, in
his usual ftlicitotta style, adding much to the life and
spirit of the occasion, by his well-timed comments in in
troducing the vsfrious speakers as the entertainment pro
gressed.
At the table, a blessing was invoked by the Rev. Mr.
Sterritt, of !he 'Reformed Pre,..byterian Church. After
copper, the clergy mounted the platform, anti prayer was
offered hy. the Rev. Mr. Slide.
The fist speaker of the evening was the Rev. Dr.
Brainerd, of a Old Pine-street Church," whose tee/arks
were, as is his wont on such occasions, exceedingly hu
morous- Re was followed in a neat speech by the Rev.
Anthony Atwood, D. D., who was snceeeded by the. Ray.
Daniel March, the newly-installed pester of Clinton,
etreet Presbyterian Church. His speech was a very
a ppy platform effort, and was received with evident
satisfaction. The next speaker was the Rev. Thleshaut
Gregg, D. D., of Dublin. His address was mainly de
voted to the relatione oC Irebscel to the Religious world,
°thee frakoit iuldroeses followed, after which, at a late
hour, a number . of uncut fancy cakes were presented to
sonie atilt snore distinguished guests, which constituted
a happy finale to the festivities of the evening.
