After a protracted struggle with the watery
elements, human patience was at length rewarded
by wit - naming, yesterday - , the oft-postponed con

the bay mare " Capitola. ' And here we cannot
but dwell upon the brilliant ercomees with which this
IfOltderflia little mare has met in her turf career.
purchased by her present owner when but three
years old, her only recommendation were her ex
cellent disposition and the four sound lege upon
which she stood. When five years old she nom.
mewed her career by a victory wherein She trotted
in the neighborhood of 2 50. She IS now seven
years old, and in the interval of her primary trot
and the present time her career, with but a few
exceptions, has been a aeries of victories, the
value of whioh will be better understood when
we consider that she trots more frequently
than any animal on tbe turf. In every respect
save develnpad speed, she is more like Flora
Temple than any animal living. She has all her
eaganity, and when, by any chance, a Boise heads
her, bar efforts are most untiring and determined
until their poeitions are reversed, when, as if
seemingly aware that her object is but barely to
win the race, she enema her exertions until again
welled upon by her driver. This will aeoonnt for
the great diaorepansiss in her time, it apparently
costing her no more exertion to trot in 2 38 (her
fastest time up to the present contest) than in 2 45,
Whisky's reputettog ) NI holing trotted in 2 i 4,
combined with the mare's success and prolate",
gave to the race of yesterday more of interest than
has attended any previous exhibition The batting

large number of spectators present. At a quarter

four fake starts they started for the
At the turn the mare showed a length in front,
an advantage which was increased tenfold by a

hie brillieut Antal, however, he was obliged to
yield, by a peek, the heat to Capitols, In 2 271.
The natural effect of the result of this heat on the
backers of Whisky was neutralized by the great
speed which he exhibited at the close, and hie
commit seemed yet to justify the noceptance of all
odds on the mare. The cxeltem-nt was 4301186-

Simultaneously with the word " go," Whisky
broke, a proceeding whiob enured him a position

the quarter pole, when Whisky's uncontrolla

which placed another length of ttirf batty:at them,
After passing the balf-mile pole, the mare was

the quarter 'pie, when Cap let out another

forts, increased his speed to such an extent that
when half-way down the stretch he, for the first
time in the race, lapped the mare The contest
was now beautiful and intensely exalting. Cap
made her final effort, whiob gave her the heat by
a short neck in 2 361, her exertions carrying • her
off her feet directly after crossing the score. The
termination of this heat left but one apiaioa as to
the result, the contest being decided on the
