Mr Qom strongly advocated the passage of the
above resolution. He spoke in the highest terms
of the gentlemen comprising the committee. He
was in favor of making an assessment upon every
aitisan_ aeeerding to what he is worth, for the sup
port of the families aforesaid,,and in ease of re
fusal to respond affirmatively, to denounce them as
traitors.
Mr. MILLER objected on the ground that too
much legislation would embarrass the eommittee.
The commissioners have been industrious in
making the necessary preparations, and in the
course of a few days everything will be in good
working order..
Ms Quints desired to know what bad been done,
and what is going to be done, and if the action of
the commission does not suit us we can express our
opinion.
Mr_ LAUGHLIN, one of the commissionere, stated
that they were doing all that men of sense and
humanity can do. There have been twelve hun
dred applications made for relief, and on Saturday
they will receive the respective amounts awarded
them. Some of the families have already been re
lieved Fifty-1.-or families in the first four wards
have been relieved. One hundred and sixty-five
now Oases were reported on Monday, and one hun
dred and fifty one to-day. He trusted the reso
lution would be withdrawn, as it was calculated to
embarrass the eommittee,
Mr. POTTER alluded to the arduous duties that
each member of the committee has to undergo.
The position is no all:moue. He referred at length
to the number of families in the Fifteenth ward
that had been visited, and detailed the , eparatione
of the eommittee in that qaarter.
Mr DINGO, president, stated that he would give
fifty dollars to the fund provided Council would
excuse, him from serving on the committee.
If it were tree, however, that the commission had
not the confidence of the community, there would
certainly be a vacanoy in it to-morrow.
After same further debate, between Messrs. Mil
ler, Laughlin, Quinn, Blynn, sad others, the rem

The Stook Market opened with a good appear

and closes weak on the speculative shares. The
heaviest decline is in Obioego and Rook 'eland,
sales having been made as low as 32. The COB.-

tirely to the poor business of the line, which has
been so nitwit redneed the past year, as to question
the ability of the aempany to prevent the ammo

this concern, as we have frequently maintained in
this column, will be disclosed as soon as those
members at the management find it for their inte
