fpHB WEEKLY PRESS.,
A NEW VOLUME!
THE WEEKLY PRESS entered upon a New Vo
lame with tho New Year.
To eey, merely, that onr paper has besn sttooessfot
would be to. give far too weak and indefinite an ide
of onr poeitioa—for, not only has
THE WEEKLY PRESS
been established on a**©»r« and permanent foundation
uuiiFis*, in reality,£ marvellous example of the degrei
of iavor which a rightly*oonddoted
LITERARY, POLITICAL, AND NEWS
JOURNAL
can reoeire at the hands of a liberal and enlightened
publio, Oar moat grateful thanks are tendered for the
patronage already bestowed upon us, and we shall spare
no efforts whioh may serve to render the paper even
more attractive, useful, and popular in the future.
The POLITICAL course of THE WEEKLY PRESS
need not be enlarged upon here. Independent, steady,
And fearless, it hss battled, unwaveringly and zealous
ly, iu defence of the
EIGHTS OP THE PEOPLE
against EXECUTIVE USURPATION, and unfair and
tyrannical legislation; erer declaring and adhering to
the dootrine that POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY oonati
totes the fundamental basis of our free institutions, and
hat the intelligence and patriotism of oar citizens wii
always be preservative of a wise, just, aod salutary Gov
ernment. These are I the principles to which THE
WEEKLY PRESS has been committed, and to these il
will adhere.
OUR NEWS COLUMNS
will continue to be the subject of unremitting care and
attention, and all diligence be employed to make tine
paper a compendium of ail the prinoipal events of inte
rest whioh transpire at home and abroad.
The LITERARY character of THE WEEKLY
PRESS, now universally acknowledged to be of an ele
vated stamp, shall not only < maintain its present high
standing, but shall be enhanced by important and value*
We contributions from able writers. Deeming FtfEift
op mobaxs the great safeguard of private happiness and
publio prosperity, we shall carefully exclude from om
oolamns everything whioh may reasonably be objected
to nn the score of improper tendenoy. The fields oi
pore literature afford sufficient material to make an AO
CEPTABLB FAMILY NEWSPAPER, containing aU
the elements of excellence, without a single objection
| able line; and the proprietor of the THE WEEKLY
PRESS may justly ol&im that no head of a family need
hesitate to let Us columns go under the notice of any
member of his household.
The general features of the paper, in addition to its
POLITICAL AND NEWS DEPARTMENTS, will be
Poetry* Sketches, Biography, and Original and B*-
heted Tales, chosen for their lessons of life, illustra
tions of history, depiotare of manners, and general
merit—and adapted, in their variety, to the tastes ol
both sexes and all ages,
COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT*
Due care will be taken to furnish our readers with
correct and reliable reports of the produoe and cattle
markets, made .up to the latest hour.
Among the agreeable variety of articles in store foi
the patrons of THE WEEKLY PRESS, it may be
mentioned that we shall oommence.inour New Volume
the publication oi
TRIALS AHD TRIUMPHS:
On. ANCIENT TIMES IN OLD VIRGINIA ;
an Original Novelette of surpassing interest, written by
an author of acknowledged ability. The story will run
through several numbers of the paper, and wilt be, in
itself, worth more than 1 the sum required fora year's
subecrivtiom
In a word, it will be the eadeayor of those oonoerned
to make THE WEEKLY PRESS continue a favorite
JOURNAL, embodying all the characteristic*
1 of a carefully-prepared newspaper*
M 9“ Subscriptions are respeotfull y sohoited. To those
who propose patronizing the “ WEEKLY PRESS, r
promptitude m forwarding their orders for the New
Volume is earnestly recommended, as, rom present
it is believed that large as the edition may
be which will be printed, it will not long be igour powei
to fnrnish baok numoers, in whioh oase disappointment
must occur.
