TO THE PUBLIC.
nlriticeis of the strike of a portion of oar men, about
one•third of the whole number employed, and an adver
tisement of an association which engendered. and is
endeavoring to maintain. an antagonism between work.
Men and employer., having appeared in tho paper*, we
notice them to aorreet the misstatements.
It is not true that we are desirous of employing men
more than ten hours per day ; neither is it true that we
hate reduced the price for overtime. The rule which
the assomation desires us to change or abrogate Is as
follows, is:
Work necessary Wl* done before or after reular
hours wil e very ted et wi ll do
quarter time, an when
expected one will do hie part cheerfully
called upon." •
Thu rule has beau in, operation ro yeses and two
months, without alteration br modi cation. It is priht
ed in large type, ands oniquelumaly p seed In every work
room kW office in our establishment since January,
IBM. This was the first and only Rule we ever had' on
the object. Yrs vi ous to this we had no published rules,
and overwork was done at various rates. as foreman end
men agreed upon ; but generally, and prineipally,at time
and quarter time or 25 percent advance on day swages.
In making the rule the price was fixed at the highest
average rates of other city shop!: work done at the
rates fixed is a loss to the proprietor. We therefore
virtually abolished, end so worded the rule—i. e.. when
Neee , sorV, and on no other &cermet do we permitit.
To show our estienation of overwork, we will state
that, during the year of IN2), the average amount of
overwork per man was throe hours , and the difference
to the man, if his wages are 82 per day. le Ib oonts per
annum, via: at our rates 71 venue, at the association's.
M. 90 cones. It is evident, from this statement, that
it is but a plea to yet the control of shops in wholii their
membere are employed, and to prevent employment of
any who are not members of the association. And as a
further pmof of this, we quote the 2il article of the con
stitution of the assocudion
" The objects of ;hie Union shall be to unite and aa •
'mete together as far as practicable, the efficient
workmen of the two trades represented in this Associa
tion, for the purpose of securing concert of notion in
whatever may be regarded as conducive to their united
interests, as the nttaininent of a fair rate of wages. the
shortening of and rendering uniform the hours of labor,
the fixing of a proper ratio of apprentices to journey
men,,the protection of the regularly -apprenticed nets
chants,, and the abolition of obnoxious and oppressive
rules in workshops."
This organization, screening itself from responsibi
lity by its scorer character, not only governs its own
members, but seeks. by intimidation and throats, to
prevent those from working who are anxious and wil
ling to do so. They declare in their preamble that
" The relation 'between capital end labor must, of
necessity, (so far its the price of the latter is con
cerned.) result in an antagonism of interests."
We think otherwise, and intend to manage our own
tipsiness in the recognition of the mutual interests ex
isting between our meh and ourselves.,
No ebjeotion to thepractical operation of our rules
has been manifested by our workmen acting inde
pendently of this association. litany of those ` who are
Moldworkp their regrets fo l low srike. and
Would resume at once if free to their own
judgment.'
With this statement we leave the manor to the Judo
moat of the publio.
