to whet its edge. Ilatv her pour the water on
the turning machine, and watched her Work
ing away with the dangerous instrument, until
the cold sweat covered every part of my body,
in despite of my determination to defend my
self to the last, Her task finished, she walked
to her reeling sons, and said, "There, that'll
Bettie him! Boys, kill you —, and then for
the watch."
I turned, turned my gun-locks silently,
touched up my faithful companion, and lay
ready to start up and shoot the first who
might attemptMy life. The 'moment was fast
approaching, and that night might have been
my list .in this world, had not Providence
made preparation for my rescue. All was
ready. - •
The infernal hag was advancing slowly, prod
bably contemplating the best way of despatch
ing me, whilst her sons should be engaged with
the Indian. I was several times on the eve of
rising, and shooting her on the spot—but she
was not to, be punished thus. The door was
suddenlyopened, and there entered two stout
travellers, each with, a .long rifle on his shout-
I, bounced up on my feet, and making
them meat heartily welcome; told them how
well it was for me that they should have ar
rived at that moment. The tale was told in a
moment. The drunken sons were secured,
and the woman, in spite of her defence and
vociferation's, shared the same Me. , The In

he would watch over us. Yon may suppose
we adept much less than we talked, The two
strangers gave sae an account of their once ha.
ving been in a somewhat similar situation. D ay
came, fair and rosy, and with it the punish
ment of our captiies.
They were now quite sobered. Their feet
were unbound, but their arms were still se
curely tied. We marebed them into the woods
off the road, and having Used them as Regula

fire to the cabin, gave all the skins and ample.

During upwards of twenty-five years, when
my wanderings extended to all parte of our
country, this was the only time at which my

Indeed, solittle rlok do travellers run in the
United States, that no one born there ever
dreams of any be encountered on tho road;
and I can only account for this occurrence, by
ouppOsing that tho Inhabitants of the cabin
.were not Americans.

No. Perhaps the living, breathing, moving
mortals themselves—smoking, laughing, talk
ingy disputing? None of these—only a long
row of empty bottles. Yet there is character
ina black bottle.
,See that little, short-necked, fat-looking fel
low, twelve inches in circumference, nino
inches high—the cork too, stuck in all awry,
like a man with his hat on. one side of the
head. He is a jolly fellow—was no doubt
filled with good old Madeira or Burgundy, per
haps Cognac—indeed ho looks very much
like Cognac; a real bully, with a little touch of
the braggadocia ; a fist would hardly overset
him, and an overeat would never break him.
Now torn to that tall, lean, lank-looking,
long-necked chap, Monsieur Claret. Weak as
the liquid lie 'holds, a north wind mast never
breathe upon him—touch him gently, or you
will shiver him to stems. Re is one of your

blo sort of personage, that never speaks much
above a whisper. No match at all for Old
Madeira. •
Some are 'staid, sober-looking bottles—the
necks are put straight on their bodies, and the
,cork® are put straight•in the necks; very cor
rect In their deportment, no doubt; never
have been, and never mean to be, iu a frolic.
Theis sides are perfectly corresponding, like
a respectably made coat; and their corks are
new, like !tabu*, well-brushed hat. There is
.something of deep thought about such an ono
'—something respectable, as if it would not be
:well to crack %Nib over them.
Then come your little, merry, facetious ar
tieles---an indent here, a protuberance there,
as if fun had twisted them all out of shape;
bottles that it makes one laugh to look at, and
that look as if they were laughing themselves.
There is, in fact, a deal of character in a
black bottle• It never talks, but then it looks
wise and knowing, and sometimes wises talk

'companionship in a black bottle, even after it

COULDN'T PIND HIS Our.—Tom Hobbs,
Coming one day into the otfue of a country
lawyer, of remarkable domestic habits, and
perceiving him, as usual, immersed in his
books, with a very grave cenntenanco ad
dressed him as follows
' a Well, Squire, I declare now, I have known
you, man and boy, theae twenty years, and yet
I can't find you out."
The Squire looked extremely grave at this
imputation upon his character, and hemmed
and hawed a number of times, before he could
give utterance to hie surprise.'
Why, really, Torn," at length said ho, "I
have always tried to sustain a reputable cha
racter-4 believe I have always dealt frankly
and aboveboard with you."
"True, true," replied Tom, stroking his
Chin with his left hand, as if weighing the im
port of his words, "but for all that I must still
say I can't find you out."
' II What do you mean, Tom? Just explain
Yourself, for really I don't understand the
meaning of this Charge."
«I mean as I say," said Tom. "I can't
find you out; and the reason is, (bowing most
krofoundly to the lawyer,) I always find you—.

Wsnortouxs.—When Dresden was taken in
1767, by the Prussians; the Immense wardrobe
of Oount Bruhl, the Saxon Minister, contained
aniongst other articles, 1200 wigs, 300 pairs of
hoots, and 800 pairs of velvet breeches, which
the Kii3g of Prussials reported to have ordered
to be divided among his guards. This maniac
of extravagance had a different habit, with its
appending gold stick, watch and snuff-box,
for every day in the month, and, lest ho should
tie so unfortunate as to appear in the costume
of the'day or week before, a regular
_register
of hie wardrobe made its daily appearance at
his table, the dresses being painted in inhale
tureln a book. The rooms of his palace were
adorned with the most costly clocks, statues
and , pictures; and even the locks of the doors
Were inlaid with gold. Four servants were
employed in the charge of his wardrobe, which

The Empress Elizabeth of Russia, whose
beauty Was equalled by her coquetry, was so
fond of dress, that her ministers, when they
wished to riot aside any project submitted to
her, needed only to bribe her dress-maker to
spoil a new robe. The catalogue of her ward
robe (tilled a thick quarto volume. Of the then
fashionable mantles, 7,000 were found in it af
ter her death,, according to Borlsof, who saw
this catalogue.
iFonon or GUNPOWDER.. -.The removal of the
ruins of old St. Paul's, in London, formed an
instructive chapter in architecture. We learn
from the tcLife of Wren," that the walls,
eighty feet perpendicular, and five feet thick,
and the tower, at least two hundred feet high,
th'ough cracked, and swayed, and tottering,
stuck obstinately together, and their removal,
stone by atone, was found tedious and dan
gerous. At first, men with picks and lovers
14sened the stones above, then canted them
Over; and laborers moved them away below,
and piled them into heaps. The want of room
(ter between the walls of the church and those
of ; the houses, there lay a street only some
,thirty yards wide,) made this way slow and nn-
Safe. ' Several men lost their lives, and the
piles of stone grew steep and Urge. Thus,
herver, Sir Christopher Wren proceeded,
ga frig every day more room, till he came to
the middle tower that bore the steeple. The
renutintiof the tower being nearly two hundred
,fedt high, the . laborer* were afraid to work
above; thereupon he concluded to facilitate
thli work by the use of gunpowder. He dug
a hole ,down by the northwest pillar of the
tosier; the tour pillars of which were each
.theut fourteen feet diameter. When he had
4pg to the foundation, he then, with crows and
,tool made on purpose, wrought a hole two
ilet - s<l ll oei hard Zito the centre of the pillard
There be placed a little tin box, containing
eighteen pounds of powder, and no more. A
cane was fixed to the box with a quick match,
as' gunners call it, within the CRHO, which
reached from the box to the ground above;
and along the ground was laid the train of pow
der with a match. After, the mine was care-
Nay closed up again with stone and mortar to
the top of the ground. Ho then observed the
effect of the blow. This little quantity of pow
der not only lifted up the whole angle of the
tower, with two groat arches which rested
upon it, but also two adjoining arches of the
aisles and all above them. Andthis it seemed
to do somewhat leisurely, cracking the walls
to the top, lifting visibly the whole weight
above nine inches, which suddenly jumping
down, made a great heap of ruins in the place
without scattering. It was half a minute be.
fore the heap opened in two or three places,
and emitted some Smoke. By this description
may be observed the incredible force of pow.
der, eighteen pounds of which lifted up three
thousand tons, and saved the work of a thou
sand laborers. The fall of so groat a weight
from a height of two hundred feet, gave a con
cussion to the ground that the inhabitants
around took for an earthquake. During
Wren's absence, his superintendent made a
larger hole, put in a greater charge ofgunpow
der, and neglecting to fortify the mouth of the
mine, applied the match. The explosion ac
complished the object; but one stone was dis
placed with such violence, that it flew to the
opposite aide of the churchyard, smashed in a
window where some women wore Bitting, and
alarmed the whole neighborhood so much,
that they united in petitioning that no more
powder should be used.
Goma. DIFFERENT SPAYS.—Rev. Dr. With
erspoon, former President of Princeton Col
lege, was once on board a packet-ship where,
among other passengers, was a professed athe
ist. This fellow was very fond of troubling
every body with his peculiar belief, and of
broaching the subject as often as he could get
any body to listen to him. "He didn't be
lieve In a God and a future state—not he."
By-and-by there came up a terrible storm, and
the prospect was that all would go to the bot
tom. There was much fear and consternation
aboard; but no one was so horribly frightened
as the atheist. In this extremity he sought
out the clergyman. He found him in the
cabin, calm and collected, and thus addressed
him: "Oh, Dr. Witherspoon! Dr. Wither
spoon I we're all going for It—we have but ti
short time to stay. Oh, my gracious 1 how
the vessel rocks ! We're all going—don't you
think we are, Doctor 7"
The reverend gentleman turned on him a
look of most provoking coolness, and replied
in broad Scotch—" Na doubt, na doubt, mon,
we're a 'ganging; but you and I dinna gang
the Jame way I"
THE DIMRENOE.—Liberty is Bet before
foxes in narrow flasks, and before storks in
flat basins. The cunning fox knows his reme
dy, and snaps ofl the neck of the flask, — at
what hope is thero for the silly stork? Me
suflers himself to be persuaded that the best
cure is to allow his bill to be trimmed.
